COVID-19 Cases Rise In Kerala, Tamil Nadu, And Maharashtra; Health Ministry Issues New Advisory

India.com25-05-2025

India is seeing a slow rise in COVID-19 cases in various states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Delhi, which has caused health authorities to release advisories requesting public vigilance. The Union Health Ministry states that there are presently 257 active COVID-19 cases in the country, most of which are mild and can be managed at home.
The spike, however not a cause for alarm, has put health authorities on their toes, particularly since sporadic cases are being reported in varying regions. Kerala has the most active cases at 95, followed by Tamil Nadu with 66 and Maharashtra at 56. The other states reporting low yet significant case numbers include Karnataka (13), Puducherry (10), Gujarat (7), and Delhi (5).
COVID-19 Active Case Count By State (as of May 25):
Kerala: 95
Tamil Nadu: 66
Maharashtra: 56
Karnataka: 13
Puducherry: 10
Gujarat: 7
Delhi: 5
Rajasthan: 2
Haryana, Sikkim, West Bengal: 1 each
In an interview with ANI, Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant of Internal Medicine in Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said that the situation is not such that it can bring panic. "At the moment, the situation is under control. These are sporadic cases, and even those are mild. No hospitalisation is being required," he added. Dr. Chatterjee further added that COVID-19 is now acting like a seasonal flu and can be treated with simple care.
COVID-19 Fatalities Reported
Although for the most part cases have been mild, two fatalities have recently been reported. In Maharashtra's Thane district, a 21-year-old diabetic patient died of the virus, the second COVID-19 fatality reported in the state. An 84-year-old comorbid patient in Karnataka also died from an infection complication.
New Variants Under Watch
Two new variants of COVID-19 — NB.1.8.1 (identified in Gujarat) and LF.7 (found in Tamil Nadu)—have been identified. Although neither has been declared a variant of concern, both are being closely monitored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Advisory From Health Ministry
The Union Health Ministry suggested basic precautions, particularly in public or populated spaces. Citizens have been instructed to:
Use masks in populated areas
Practice normal hand hygiene
Don't travel if feeling unwell
Although the increase in cases has not caused panic, authorities remain vigilant to ensure that the spread is contained.

14-year-old girl tests Covid positive in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: A 14-year-old girl in Visakhapatnam tested positive for Covid-19 and was kept in the isolation ward. So far, three Covid positive cases have been reported in KGH over the past 15 days. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On suspicion, samples of two persons were sent to Pune for testing. It may be recalled that a 27-year-old woman tested positive, and it came to light very late. By that time, she recovered, and her family members also tested negative a week later. The teenage girl was admitted a couple of days ago with fever and other symptoms. The RT-PCR test result was positive, and the girl was put under the supervision of doctors in the isolation ward. In most cases, it was the Omicron variant. Following the increase in Covid-19 cases, the district authorities arranged a 50-bed isolation ward, Covid kits, and medicines. KGH superintendent, Dr Sivananda, told TOI that they are testing around 50 to 60 people everyday. "Every case of fever is not a Covid case. People with health ailments such as heart-related, lung, and kidney issues should go for tests if the fever does not subside in five days. So far, oxygen has not been required for patients who are recuperating within five to six days. People should not panic," he said.

GRH sets up 50-bed Covid-19 ward as precaution

Madurai: Amid a recent uptick in Covid-19 cases across Tamil Nadu, Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai has set up a dedicated 50-bed isolation ward as a precautionary step. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While no active cases have been reported in the city, health officials are urging the public to wear masks and maintain hand hygiene in crowded areas. The isolation facility includes 30 beds for adults and 20 for children. GRH dean Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar said the hospital is fully prepared to manage any potential Covid-19 cases, following directions from the state health department. "We have ample supplies of medicines and oxygen. OPD staff have been instructed to wear masks and follow hygiene protocols. Covid testing will be conducted only if deemed necessary," he said, adding that fever cases are being closely monitored. Health officials clarified there has been no spike in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases. "There were a few fever cases after the rains, but no clusters or surges have been identified. People are advised to avoid self-medication and seek medical advice for persistent symptoms," an official said. Surveillance has also been tightened at Madurai airport. Passengers arriving from abroad with fever or cough are being screened and isolated if needed. A 16-member monitoring team has been deployed for airport vigilance. MSID:: 121652081 413 |
