State supports Malindo Fest: Nizam

TAWAU: Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the Malindo Cultural Festival is in line with the State Government's aim to promote and enhance our appreciation for Sabah's diverse cultural heritage. He said the festival also complements Tawau's own annual International Cultural Festival (FKAT), positioning the district as a centre for cultural diversity. Nizam emphasised that the close ties between Malaysia and Indonesia are particularly visible in border areas such as Tawau, which shares land boundaries with Kalimantan, where the people are of similar ethnic roots, sentiments and traditions. 'We hope such programmes can be held annually with the support of all parties, including government agencies, the private sector and non-governmental organisations,' he said. Indonesian Consul-General in Tawau Aris Heru Utomo said the festival as a unifying cultural event that strengthens bonds between communities in Sabah and Kalimantan. 'Through such activities, we hope to deepen understanding of the cultural exchanges between Malaysia and Indonesia, while overshadowing the more elite-level political issues at government level. 'We also hope the programme will continue and perhaps in future be held in other parts of Indonesia, such as North Kalimantan, not only in Tawau through the Sosek–Malindo initiative,' he said. Aris praised the festival for being community-driven, saying it was proof of the public's awareness of the importance of strengthening cross-border relations. In addition to maps, Google also offers features such as Street View on both Google Maps and Google Earth, allowing users to see streets and buildings through panoramic images. Most people are aware that these images are usually captured by specially equipped Google Street View cars fitted with 360-degree cameras. However, not many realise that in areas inaccessible to vehicles, the images are collected on foot by individuals carrying portable camera systems. Recently, a video went viral showing a man walking around Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur carrying a large backpack camera system for Google Maps. The video, uploaded on TikTok by @wbbb_ttt, showed the man crossing pedestrian walkways and using an overhead bridge, attracting the attention of passers-by. The TikTok user remarked that the backpack looked heavy but admitted being excited at the thought of possibly appearing on Street View. Google refers to the portable system as the Trekker, a backpack-mounted 360-degree camera designed to capture narrow streets, pedestrian areas, and other locations only accessible on foot. Social media users responded with a mix of amusement and curiosity, with some joking that it looked like a fun job, while others asked how they could apply to be a Trekker. Sabah Fest brings North Borneo's culture to Singapore

SINGAPORE: The sights and sounds of Sabah came alive at Marina Square on Saturday as the Sabah Fest Singapore Edition 2025 showcased North Borneo's culture through music, dance, food, and heritage. Visitors enjoyed traditional performances, food products, and crafts that reflected the state's diverse ethnic traditions. For Sabahans living in Singapore, the event was a chance to reconnect with their roots, while Singaporeans were introduced to Sabah's cultural richness. Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Indera Azfar Mohd Mustafa jointly launched the celebration. He described Sabah Fest as an ideal introduction for first-time visitors, adding that it builds momentum for Visit Malaysia 2026 and complements the state's Explore Sabah campaign. Festival to showcase Beluran's cultural heritage and tourism potential

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the festival reflected strong public support for the state government's commitment to uphold local arts, culture, and identity. He added that the celebration not only showcased the uniqueness of Beluran's cultural traditions but also served as a way to foster togetherness among the people. Speaking at the launch at Fama Tamu ground here on Saturday, Hajiji said the spirit of cooperation demonstrated during the festival should be emulated to ensure cultural heritage continues for future generations. In conjunction with the event, Hajiji also launched the Sabah Blood Cockle Industry and Resource Development Project at Beluran Jetty as a continuation of the pilot initiative started in Tuaran in July. The 1,300-hectare project involves 650 households working collectively on blood cockle farming, expected to produce 3,240 metric tonnes annually worth around RM34.4 million, with a potential sevenfold return on investment. He said the community-based aquaculture initiative would generate income, create jobs, and at the same time protect marine habitats, positioning Beluran as a benchmark for sustainable aquaculture in the region. During the same event, Hajiji presented 180 Native Title land grants covering more than 297 hectares in Kolapis, Pulau Klagan, and Sapi, reaffirming the government's commitment to secure land ownership for rural communities. The Chief Minister also proposed that Beluran Labuk Fest be included in the state tourism calendar to attract more visitors and boost the local economy through traditional music, dances, and attire unique to the district.
