Meeting Between Sree Narayana Guru And Mahatma Gandhi Is Inspiring: PM Modi
Addressing the centenary celebration at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, PM Modi said, "This premises is becoming a witness to remembering an unprecedented incident in the history of our country; a historic incident which not only showed a new direction to our freedom movement but also gave a solid meaning to the goal of independence and the dream of an independent India. 100 years ago, the meeting between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi is inspiring and relevant even today."
The Prime Minister said that even after a century, that meeting continues to serve as a source of energy for social harmony and for our collective goals towards a developed India.
"The ideals of Shri Narayan Guru are a great treasure for all of humanity. Those who work with the resolve to serve the nation and society, Shri Narayan Guru is like a guiding light for them," he said.
"India's speciality is that whenever our country gets entangled in the whirlpool of difficulties, some great personality is born in some corner of the country to show a new direction to society," the PM said, while adding that some of them work for the spiritual upliftment of society, while others accelerate social reforms in the social sphere.
Highlighting India's leadership in global events, PM Modi said, "Recently, we celebrated World Yoga Day. This time, the theme of Yoga Day was-- One Earth, One Health, meaning one planet, one health! Even before this, India had initiated efforts like One World One Health for global well-being. Today, India is leading global movements like One Sun, One World, One Grid in the direction of sustainable development. In 2023, when India led the G20 Summit, the theme was-- One Earth, One Family, One Future."
"The concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or the world is one family, is intertwined with these efforts," he added.
PM Narendra Modi and other dignitaries performed 'guru smarna' at the centenary celebration of the historic conversation between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.
Organised by Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust, the celebration will bring together spiritual leaders and other members to reflect upon and commemorate the visionary dialogue that continues to shape India's social and moral fabric. It stands as a powerful tribute to the shared vision of social justice, unity, and spiritual harmony championed by both Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi.
The historic conversation took place at Sivagiri Mutt on 12 March 1925 during Mahatma Gandhi's visit and centred around Vaikom Satyagraha, religious conversions, non-violence, abolition of untouchability, attainment of salvation, and the uplift of the downtrodden, among others.

Tushar Gandhi to inaugurate KSSP seminar
The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) will organise a national seminar on the 'Challenges faced by Universities' in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. Social activist and the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi, will inaugurate the programme. KSSP president T.K. Meerabai will preside over the inaugural session. The seminar, which will bring together prominent education experts and social activists, will focus on preserving federalism in education, defending democratic values and protecting the rights of States to regulate education within their jurisdictions, particularly against the backdrop of the National Education Policy 2020, the organisers said in a statement. Former Vice-Chancellor of National University of Advanced Legal Studies N.K. Jayakumar will deliver a keynote address on 'University laws and dissenting opinions.' Former Kerala University Vice-Chancellor B. Ekbal will also speak at the session. Another keynote session on 'Challenges in higher education and the path forward' will be led by Kerala Council for Historical Research chairperson K.N. Ganesh. Noted educationist R.V.G. Menon will also speak on the occasion. Later, Mr. Gandhi and former Education Minister C. Raveendranath will deliver lectures under the aegis of the Kerala Vidyabhyasa Samithi.

Assam govt comes up with new Mahatma Gandhi Statue and clock tower amid controversy
Synopsis The Assam government's installation of a new Mahatma Gandhi statue and clock tower in Doomdooma, Tinsukia district, followed controversy over the removal of the old statue. Opposition Congress members, including Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi, criticized the move, alleging disrespect towards the Father of the Nation. AP Guwahati: Amidst doubts from several quarters, Assam government has come up with a clock tower and mint fresh statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Assam's Doomdooma town in Tinsukia district. Earlier removal of statue has snowballed in a major controversy with opposition Congress protesting the move and alleging that this was disrespect by BJP to the father of the Nation. Mahatma's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi had scaled up the matter to Assam chief minister. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacting to a post by Mahatma's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi had written on X: 'I am not aware of this decision taken by the district administration. Let me verify the facts.' The chief minister also maintained that Assam owes much to Mahatma Gandhi. "He stood firmly with Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi when the Congress party led by Nehru wanted to include Assam in Pakistan under the Grouping Plan," Sarma had stated on the microblogging site. Tushar Gandhi wrote, 'Not surprising that the BJP government in Assam decided to replace Bapu's statue with a clock tower in Dibrugarh. Their slavish colonial hangover persists.' The 60-year-old statue was removed as part Doom Doom's makeover project which included building a clock tower and replacing the old statue with another statue. Large people turned out to witness the installations and inauguration of the clock tower on Wednesday. Officials in Municipal Board, 'The statue necessitated replacement as one side of the spectacles of the statue was damaged and there were a couple of damages that have crept in the statue over the years. The face of the statue was facing the old AT Raad which is no longer the entry point of Doom Dooma town.' Assam minister for Labour and Doomdooma MLA Rupesh Gowala said, 'We had assured a new and taller statue of the Father of the Nation would be erected at the same site and today we have done so. This was our commitment to the people, and we have fulfilled the same.' Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah laid the foundation stone of the project before the 2024 Lok Sabha election. When the contractor had begun the work a couple, former MLA of Doomdooma and Congress leader Durga Bhumij along with some Congressmen arrived at the site and opposed the removal of the statue of Gandhi and building a clock tower there. Bhumij had alleged that the BJP never paid due respect to Gandhi. Instead, it always gave respect to Nathuram Godse. At a time when Gandhi's statue was set up in as many as 80 countries around the world, the Board is going to build a clock tower by removing the statue of the Father of the Nation.'
