Nebraska predicted to win eight games by Sports Illustrated
This would not be an unreasonable ask. Nebraska finished 7-6 last season, including a win in the Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College. Now, quarterback Dylan Raiola has another year under his belt, and an improved offensive line could make things easier for the program.
Purnell believes that how they get to that eight-win mark is going to matter, as he wrote in his column earlier this week.
"A 7-5 regular-season probably results in another lower-tier bowl game and a possible eighth win over an average opponent. That feels a lot like last season. I'm not debating it would still represent incremental progress, but in order to capitalize on momentum, the perception has to be different."
This is certainly a reasonable expectation given the talent on the roster. Anything less would be a difficult pill for Husker fans to swallow, given that the schedule works in their favor.

Explosive and elusive, RB Deuce Vaughn impressing in Cowboys training camp
Training camp is in full effect and for teams like the Dallas Cowboys, roster spots are on the line. Running back headlines a list of positions the Cowboys hope to fill through open competition and a competitive atmosphere. RB is particularly interesting because Dallas doesn't just have an opening at the starting spot, but the entire RB depth chart is up for grabs here in Oxnard. Deuce Vaughn, a 2023 sixth round draft pick, is one of such RBs fighting for a role in 2025. The 5-foot-6, 176-pound jitterbug is a niche player who has been one of the first to shine in training camp. The Kansas State product has been quick to the hole, explosive out of his cuts and hellbent on getting downfield fast. Through his first two years in the NFL Vaughn has had a tough time getting on the field. His 40 career carries for 110 yards equates to just a 2.8 yards/carry average. His impossibly small build has come with some obvious liabilities that have yet to be overcome and some advantages that have yet to be realized in real game action. In this his third NFL season, he's flashing some of those advantages early in training camp and hoping to continue it through the preseason and onto the final roster in 2025. Vaughn's small stature and frictionless cuts have been on full display. Standing a full foot shorter than many of the lineman in front of him, Vaughn can easy dip below sight lines and navigate with stealth-like precision behind blockers and through holes. It's an image he's flashed in the past before and again here in 2025 it's invigorated his personal fanbase within Cowboys Nation. How Vaughn holds up when pads and contact ramp up is the question everyone's asking. As a college workhorse who ran for over 3,600 yards in his last three seasons, Vaughn has proven he's more than meets the eye. His durability and elusiveness have allowed him to overcome his size limitations in the past and remain his gateway to a meaningful role in the pros. Vaughn comes to training camp on the roster bubble. He has to prove he can be a player in the NFL and that can only come when all the pads come on and the hits are real. But his flashes in shells aren't nothing and they serve as a reminder of what someone like him can bring to the table when given the right role. USA TODAY Sports has Brent Venables on the hot seat entering 2025
Since 1998, the Oklahoma Sooners have finished below .500 only twice. Unfortunately for current coach Brent Venables, both times it's happened under his watch. Though many are expecting a bounce-back season for the Sooners, the SEC media isn't quite ready to crown them, picking Oklahoma to finish 10th in the SEC preseason media poll. The Sooners are coming off a 6-7 season with a 2-6 record after their first year in the Southeastern Conference. That disappointment, combined with the 6-7 season in 2022, when Oklahoma was still in the Big 12, has put Venables' job in jeopardy. USA TODAY Sports writers Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams ranked the five coaches with the hottest seats in the SEC, and Venables came in third in Toppmeyer's top five and No. 4 according to Adams. Rival Texas experienced little trouble transitioning to the SEC. That adds up to a pivotal Year 4 for Venables, who soon will be working for a new athletic director. Joe Castiglione, who hired Venables, is retiring. - Toppmeyer and Adams, USA TODAY Sports Though a 10th-place finish would be an improvement - the Sooners finished in a tie for 14th last year - it would make Venables' job prospects tenuous, most likely. To help alleviate some of that pressure, Venables hired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle from Washington State. Along with Arbuckle came quarterback John Mateer. Mateer is considered one of the top transfers in the country after leading FBS in total touchdowns last year, running for 15 and throwing for 29. Running back Jaydn Ott also joins the offense from California-Berkeley, and after being named all Pac-12 two seasons ago, was ranked preseason second-team All-SEC last week. Oklahoma went all in to turn over the offensive group that finished 97th in the nation in points per game in 2024. If they can get an improved performance from the offense to go along with Venables' defense, the Sooners should be in good shape in 2025. The only coaches in the conference with hotter seats are Arkansas' Sam Pittman and Auburn's Hugh Freeze, according to the list. Georgia, LSU or Tennessee? ESPN names Alabama football's biggest 'swing game' of 2025
The 2025 schedule for Alabama football features no shortage of big games and challenges ahead. The Crimson Tide have largely the same schedule as 2024. In SEC play, they'll face the same opponents as last season, only with home vs. away dates flipped. Alabama also hosts Wisconsin on the back end of a home-and-home series, leaving room for just three new opponents on the 2025 schedule. Alabama opens the season with its first ever visit to Tallahassee to face Florida State instead of hosting Western Kentucky. The Crimson Tide host Louisiana Monroe (ULM) rather than South Florida, and Eastern Illinois replaces Mercer this year as an FCS opponent. Having the same eight opponents in conference play also means that Alabama will face Georgia in a rematch of last year's classic won by the Tide. It will mark Alabama's first visit to Sanford Stadium since 2015 when the Crimson Tide won as underdogs against Mark Richt's final Bulldogs team. On Wednesday, ESPN's panel of college football insiders called Alabama-Georgia the biggest swing game of the year for the Crimson Tide. Chris Low reasoned: "A loss at Georgia wouldn't necessarily be a crippling blow, especially since Georgia hasn't lost a game at home in five years, but winning in Athens would afford Alabama a mulligan (or two) if the Tide were to trip up the rest of the way against somebody they shouldn't lose to." Alabama knows a thing or two about that, given that they followed up last year's thrilling 41-34 win over the Dawgs with a first-in-40-years loss to Vanderbilt. The Tide also "tripped up" late last season in an ugly 24-3 clunker at Oklahoma that ultimately proved fatal to their College Football Playoff hopes. Earlier this summer, the SEC announced that kickoff for Alabama-Georgia would be in prime time (6:30 p.m. CT, ABC). Georgia's five-year home winning streak notwithstanding, Alabama hasn't lost a regular season game to the Bulldogs since Nick Saban's first year in Tuscaloosa in 2007. The Tide's last loss in Athens was in 2003 during Mike Shula's first season as coach; though in fairness, the two teams have met Between the Hedges only three times this century. Something will have to give when Alabama and Georgia meet on Sept. 27.
