Northwestern's suspension of Bridgewater sparks outrage from state board of education
On Tuesday, Florida State Board of Education member Daniel Foganholi tweeted demanding Bridgewater's immediate reinstatement and wrote a letter with said message to Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Jose L. Dotres.
Bridgewater was recently suspended by Miami Northwestern High for allegedly violating Florida High School Athletic Association rules regarding impermissible benefits for his players.
Bridgewater had previously posted on his Facebook page he had paid for players' Uber rides.
A source told the Miami Herald this week that the suspension is for the duration of the upcoming high school football season, which begins next month.
'The decision to suspend him was shameful. Coach Bridgewater stepped up to care for his players in a way the system rarely does,' Foganholi wrote in the letter. 'He ordered them Ubers so they had a safe ride home after practice. I needed a coach to spot me lunch. I needed a role model like Teddy. We all do. We should be celebrating role models like him, not canceling them. Suspending him as a football coach is a failure of leadership.
'Reinstate Teddy now.'
Bridgewater confirmed the suspension via a post on his Facebook page on Sunday night.
'The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you,' Bridgewater wrote in the post. 'So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.'
More than a week ago, Bridgewater went on social media and asked fans to help him recover at least some of the money he has spent on his players, including $700 per week for Uber rides. According to original reporting by the Palm Beach Post, Bridgewater also spent $2,200 for pregame meals and $1,300 for athletic-recovery services.
Bridgewater led his alma mater to its first state title since 2019 and their ninth overall in his first season as coach last year. Northwestern had gone 4-6 the previous season and missed the playoffs.
Heading into this season, the Bulls are heavy favorites to repeat as champions and perhaps be ranked among the top teams in the nation with one of the nation's most talented rosters.
Bridgewater, who played 11 seasons in the NFL for seven different teams including the Dolphins as Tua Tagovailoa's backup, made a brief return to action this past January with the Detroit Lions as Jared Goff's backup. Bridgewater has made $65.2 million in his NFL career, according to OverTheCap.com.
South Florida high school football teams in South Florida are set to officially begin practices on July 28 and teams begin playing preseason games on Aug. 14. Northwestern's regular-season opener is scheduled for Aug. 23 at Traz Powell Stadium against Orange (California) Lutheran High at 7.

Texas A&M's 'old' offensive line should be the Aggies' offensive catalyst in 2025
Texas A&M's 2025 offensive line is poised to be one of the best units in the country, thanks to its experience and NFL-level talent, which will provide starting quarterback Marcel Reed and the Aggie running game a significant boost compared to last season's inconsistent performance. Throughout the offseason, head coach Mike Elko continued to praise his top seven returning offensive linemen, believing that winning in the trenches is the key to unlocking Texas A&M's offense. On Monday, during his sixth Coach's Night of the summer in San Antonio, Elko continued to praise the group, noting that, during his second-to-last season as Texas A&M's defensive coordinator before becoming Duke's head coach, the Aggies' 2025 O-line is the most experienced unit since A&M's memorable 2020 season, which included an Orange Bowl victory over North Carolina. "It's great to bring back all seven of our top offensive lineman. The last time we were this old at that position, we ended our season playing in the Orange Bowl. It's a really strong starting point to have a group like that." On paper, this is how the starting five offensive line could look when the Aggies open the 2025 season vs. UTSA: At center, Nabou is coming off another injury-riddled season and will contend with veteran Koli Faaiu for the starting job. Notable guard depth includes redshirt freshmen Ashton Funk and Blake Ivy, while five-star freshman tackle Lamont Rogers might be too talented to keep off the field. Another battle is at right tackle, as senior Reuben Fatheree is back for a final season, but will likely play behind Dametrious Crownover. Both are excellent pass protectors, so it will be tough to deny a close to equal snap count. Iowa football trio named to preseason USA TODAY Sports All-Big Ten team
With Big Ten media days just around the corner for Iowa on Thursday in Las Vegas, USA TODAY Sports released its preseason All-Big Ten team. And the Hawkeyes had some good representation. The team was created by writers who cover every single team in the conference and features five unanimous selections, one of which was a Hawkeye. It may be a surprise to note that Iowa doesn't have a single defensive player on the team, a sign that people are taking a wait-and-see approach to a Hawkeyes defense that lost Jay Higgins, Nick Jackson, and Sebastian Castro, among others. Regardless, it's a nice nod for the three Hawkeyes named to this team and should have Iowa fans feeling more confident about the offense and special teams units on this year's team. Without any further ado, let's take a look at which Hawkeyes made USA TODAY Sports' preseason All-Big Ten team. Which Hawkeyes made the USA TODAY Sports preseason All-Big Ten team? Logan Jones, Gennings Dunker, and Kaden Wetjen were the three Hawkeyes named to the team. Jones was one of five unanimous selections to the team, joining Jeremiah Smith and Sonny Styles of Ohio State, Olaivavega Ioane of Penn State, and Dominic Zvada of Michigan. The 6-foot-3, 302-pound graduate student center has anchored the Iowa offensive line for three years and was named first-team All-Big Ten by the media last season. Jones has also been named a preseason first-team All-Big Ten player by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele this offseason. Jones is joined on the USA TODAY Sports All-Big Ten team by another offensive lineman in Gennings Dunker. The 6-foot-5, 315-pound senior right tackle was named second-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and third-team All-Big Ten by the media last season. Dunker started at right tackle the last two seasons and has been a big stabilizing force on the offensive line alongside Jones. Dunker's role will be imperative this season with a new quarterback under center. The final Hawkeye to make the team was Kaden Wetjen, named as the All-Purpose player. The 5-foot-9, 196-pound senior return specialist started his collegiate career at Iowa Western Community College before transferring to Iowa. He was named first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and media last season, in addition to taking home the Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year award. Wetjen was named a preseason first-team All-Big Ten player by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele as well. This trio of Hawkeyes will be hugely important to the success of Iowa football in 2025. Assuming they play up to the standards that everyone believes they can, Iowa's offensive line should be really good and the special teams will set them up with short fields. The Hawkeyes return to the field in just over a month for the season opener on Aug. 30 against Albany. T.J. Watt's huge Steelers extension weighing on Micah Parsons at Cowboys training camp
Steelers' T.J. Watt is now the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL — and fellow edge rusher Micah Parsons has taken notice. On Day 1 of Cowboys training camp, reporters asked Parsons if he was discouraged by the stall in extension talks with Dallas — leaving the superstar defender to share his honest feelings on the current state of the edge rusher market, including Watt's new extension. 'Honestly, yeah,' Parsons said. 'When you go around the league and you see these other teams taking care of their best guys — I see T.J. got taken care of. Maxx [Crosby] got taken care of. Myles [Garrett] got taken care of, and he's got two years left on his deal. You see a lot of people in our league getting taken care of and you wish you had that same type of energy." It was rumored that Parsons could eventually usurp Watt as the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league — but the Steelers set the bar high for the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones to match. On Monday, Jones hinted at potential injury concerns as a holdup to giving Parsons his payday — sparking intense debate and criticism on social media. This type of distraction in Dallas is the last thing any team wants to deal with — and the Steelers' front office should be commended for avoiding it by getting Watt's deal done ahead of training camp.
