Source: Michael Reaves / Getty Teddy Bridgewater did the right thing after his 10-year NFL career, as he returned to his high school football team to help the next generation fulfill their dreams, but now he's being penalized for it. The one-time Pro Bowler has been fired from his head coaching job at his alma mater, Miami Northwestern Senior High School, for allegedly violating Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) rules regarding 'impermissible benefits.' According to Sports Illustrated , he reportedly spent $70,000 of his own money to ensure his players had what they needed throughout the season. The staggering amount he spent on the boys wasn't a secret and was something he shared on Facebook earlier this month when he asked for donations from the community to help pitch in so he'd ' no longer have to take from my personal funds to keep smiles on these young men face and remind them that they matter.' In the lengthy post, he discusses spending $700 a week on Uber rides, $1,500 a week on catered meals, $9,500 on pride uniforms, $14,000 on a training camp, and $1,300 a week on recovery trucks. So, h e's asking for the community to donate to the team through his Be Bridge Foundation. He ends the message with, 'These are all things I choose to do on my own and are not requirements for the boys to have according to the rule makers and those who make the decisions at MNW.' Once Bridgewater was made aware of the suspension, he immediately took to social media, blaming Associate Head Coach Verne Louis. He also stated that a suspension is technically not possible because he's not an actual employee of the school. 'Damn people done caused all this confusion. Got a phone call tonight and it's no real investigation going on.. I told you I have to be an employee to be investigated. Now the paperwork thing still stands but there was no investigation… We SELF REPORTED,' he wrote on social media. 'Verne and his Administrative homeboys want me gone apparently and tried to hire one of my dawgs like bro wasn't gone lace me up… The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you. So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE.' He also doesn't plan on leaving the program, saying he'll 'volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Social media is upset that a rule intended to prevent wealthy schools from negatively influencing students is being enforced, despite Bridgewater's intentions being pure. See the reactions below. Northwestern's suspension of Bridgewater sparks outrage from state board of education

Miami Northwestern's recent suspension of head football coach and former Miami Dolphins quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has prompted outrage from South Florida all the way to the Florida state capital. On Tuesday, Florida State Board of Education member Daniel Foganholi tweeted demanding Bridgewater's immediate reinstatement and wrote a letter with said message to Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Jose L. Dotres. Bridgewater was recently suspended by Miami Northwestern High for allegedly violating Florida High School Athletic Association rules regarding impermissible benefits for his players. Bridgewater had previously posted on his Facebook page he had paid for players' Uber rides. A source told the Miami Herald this week that the suspension is for the duration of the upcoming high school football season, which begins next month. 'The decision to suspend him was shameful. Coach Bridgewater stepped up to care for his players in a way the system rarely does,' Foganholi wrote in the letter. 'He ordered them Ubers so they had a safe ride home after practice. I needed a coach to spot me lunch. I needed a role model like Teddy. We all do. We should be celebrating role models like him, not canceling them. Suspending him as a football coach is a failure of leadership. 'Reinstate Teddy now.' Bridgewater confirmed the suspension via a post on his Facebook page on Sunday night. 'The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you,' Bridgewater wrote in the post. 'So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' More than a week ago, Bridgewater went on social media and asked fans to help him recover at least some of the money he has spent on his players, including $700 per week for Uber rides. According to original reporting by the Palm Beach Post, Bridgewater also spent $2,200 for pregame meals and $1,300 for athletic-recovery services. Bridgewater led his alma mater to its first state title since 2019 and their ninth overall in his first season as coach last year. Northwestern had gone 4-6 the previous season and missed the playoffs. Heading into this season, the Bulls are heavy favorites to repeat as champions and perhaps be ranked among the top teams in the nation with one of the nation's most talented rosters. Bridgewater, who played 11 seasons in the NFL for seven different teams including the Dolphins as Tua Tagovailoa's backup, made a brief return to action this past January with the Detroit Lions as Jared Goff's backup. Bridgewater has made $65.2 million in his NFL career, according to South Florida high school football teams in South Florida are set to officially begin practices on July 28 and teams begin playing preseason games on Aug. 14. Northwestern's regular-season opener is scheduled for Aug. 23 at Traz Powell Stadium against Orange (California) Lutheran High at 7.

Teddy Bridgewater Suspended From HS Coaching Gig

Last year, former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was generating headlines without even playing. But that's because he took a job as a coach instead. Bridgewater's foray into coaching went swimmingly, as he led Miami Northwestern to a 3A state title. However, now we're learning his role came with some drawbacks too. Advertisement According to Bridgewater himself, he was apparently suspended by Miami Northwestern High School after he reportedly paid for his athletes' Uber rides along with other 'impermissible benefits.' Those benefits included physical therapy, recovery help, pregame meals, field paint, and more. While this story may have flown under the radar, Bridgewater made it all very public by making a Facebook post about the whole scenario. 'The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you. So if [I'm] suspended from MNW [I'm] free to go to another school of my choice but [I'm] NOT GOING ANYWHERE. And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.'' Teddy Bridgewater Bridgewater was apparently working on a volunteer basis, not as an actual employee of the school. That's where some of the confusion came in. Either way, as he stated, Bridgewater won't be backing down. If anything, he seems to be even further committed to helping MNW, even if it's not from their own sideline. Advertisement Bridgewater previously announced his retirement from the NFL after the 2023 season, but later returned in 2024 for the Detroit Lions. He remains unsigned this offseason, and it remains to be seen whether the former first-round pick is officially done with the NFL or not. Still just 32 years old, he presumably would still be able to land a roster spot with ease. Related: 5 best Jauan Jennings trade landing spots before training camp Related Headlines

Teddy Bridgewater says he has been suspended by Miami HS he coached to state title

Former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been suspended as the head football coach at his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, Bridgewater confirmed on social media on July 13. The suspension comes less than a week after Bridgewater detailed in a Facebook post, in which he was asking for donations for the program, that he spent $2,200 per week to feed his players pregame meals, $14,000 to conduct a training camp, $9,500 for uniforms, $1,300 a week for recovery services for players, $300 a week to keep the team's field painted and $700 for Uber rides. Bridgewater alleged that administrators at Northwestern 'want me gone apparently.' 'The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you,' Bridgewater wrote. 'So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Teddy Bridgewater paid out of pocket for training camp ($14K), pride sets ($9,500), pregame meals ($2,200/wk), recovery ($1,300/wk), Ubers ($700/wk), field paint ($300/wk).He did this as a VOLUNTEER, not employee. FHSAA rules state that 'no school employee, athletic department staff member, or representative of a school's athletic interests…may form, direct, offer, provide, or otherwise engage in any activity outlined' in the organization's bylaw governing amateurism and name, image and likeness. In his first season as head coach, the 32-year-old Bridgewater led Miami Northwestern to a Class 3A state championship in Florida, with the Bulls winning each of their playoff games by at least 40 points. A former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, Bridgewater played in the NFL for 10 seasons, from 2014-23, before retiring after the 2023 season. He briefly came out of retirement to join his former team, the Detroit Lions, late last December for their final two regular-season games and their divisional round playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. He resumed his role as Miami Northwestern's coach shortly after that run. Bridgewater finished his NFL career with 15,120 passing yards, 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions while completing 66.4% of his passes. He was a Pro Bowler in 2015 after leading the Vikings to the playoffs, but suffered a catastrophic knee injury during a preseason practice in 2016 that nearly required his leg to be amputated and altered the trajectory of his career.

Teddy Bridgewater suspended from HS coaching job

Former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been suspended from his position as a high school football coach in Miami while under investigation for allegedly providing impermissible benefits. Bridgewater, 32, confirmed his suspension by Miami Northwestern in a Facebook post on Sunday but said he remains committed to his alma mater. "The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you. So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. "And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem." Bridgewater led Miami Northwestern to a Class 3A state championship in his first season as the coach in 2024. He returned to the NFL in December to serve as Jared Goff's backup with the Detroit Lions but did not appear in a regular season game. In the playoffs, he completed his only pass attempt for 3 yards in a 45-31 loss against the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. According to multiple reports, Bridgewater posted earlier this month on Facebook that he paid for Uber rides, meals and recovery services for his players last season. He asked fans to donate to help cover such expenses this year. The Florida High School Athletic Association confirmed to Rivals on Monday that it is gathering more information. Bridgewater played for six NFL teams from 2014-24, compiling a 33-32 record with 15,120 passing yards and 75 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl after an 11-5 season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
