'Are Jawans On Border Complaining?': Gavaskar Slams India's Workload Management

Sunil Gavaskar believes workload management is a 'mental issue' and India players should learn from 'jawans on the border' before using it as a reason to not play for the country.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar wants the men's team to wipe out the term 'workload' from their dictionary, citing Mohammed Siraj and Rishabh Pant as examples of how players should forget their aches and pains for the country. He labeled workload as a 'mental thing', stating that the current crop needs to learn from the army men on the national border who weren't complaining about things like the cold.
Workload management started as a buzzword in the last decade but now has become an important aspect of all cricket, backed by science and analysis. Because the number of matches has gone up and there are fewer days of break between two high-intensity encounters, teams around the world aim to pick some days of rest for their players, seeing it as an opportunity to keep them injury-free and test other players.
'Mohammed Siraj debunked forever this business of workload," Gavaskar told India Today. 'I hope that the workload word gets taken out of Indian cricket dictionary. For 5 Test matches, non-stop he has bowled 7-8 over spells, because the captain wanted him and the country expected of him. And that is one thing I think people keep in mind that workload is a mental thing, not a physical thing and if you are going to succumb to people who are talking about workload, then you are never going to have your best players on the field for your country," he added.
While Siraj was the only pacer across both teams to feature in every innings available to his team, Rishabh Pant came out to bat despite suffering a fracture in his foot during the fourth Test.
'When you are playing for your country, forget the aches and the pains. On the border, do you think that the jawans are complaining about cold? Here in cricket, give your best for the country, don't worry about the aches and pains. What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That is what you expect from the players. Playing cricket in India is an honour. You are representing 140 crore people and that is what we saw in Mohammed Siraj," Gavaskar added.
India drew England 2-2 in the series with a nail-biting win at the Oval.

The duo recently made a public appearance at Wimbledon 2025 on Monday (July 7) as Novak Djokovic delivered a masterclass comeback during his Round of 16 match against Alex de Minaur. Kohli, who is currently in London, was seen cheering from the stands, accompanied by Anushka. Virat Kohli was recently invited to the YouWeCan charity event in London. Seated among other celebrity guests, the Indian cricketer was seen having a good time. He soon noticed travel blogger and comedian Sumit Sapra sitting in another seat. Virat immediately recognised him, greeted him with a big, wide smile, and waved from his seat. He silently asked Virat about wife Anushka Sharma. Watch it here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sumit Sapra (@summit_comedy_cabaret) In an interview with Vogue after Vamika's birth, Anushka had mentioned that she is the primary caregiver for her child. She stated that Virat Kohli has to play cricket throughout the year, while she can decide how many films she wants to do and when. She stressed that her main focus will be on her children, especially during their early years. Reflecting on how she and Virat split duties, Anushka said, 'We don't see it as mum and dad duties, but as a family unit. For us, it's important that our child be raised with a very balanced outlook. It is all about shared duties. I will be the primary caregiver, especially in the first few years, and that's the reality… I am self-employed, and I can decide when I am working, if I do one or two films a year. In Virat's case, he plays round the year. What becomes important is the time we spend together as a family." The actress added, 'Times have changed. It's important for children to look at their parents—they learn from you. And there is a sense of normalcy that both of us work. Of course, one will have to manage things differently and more efficiently to work… Conditioning is the most important role in how we see the world. I come from a progressive background, so that will always be a part of our home. Love is the underlying factor in our home, and what's important to us is that our child be respectful of people. You have to create that value structure. We don't want to raise brats." Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma got married on December 11, 2017, in a beautiful wedding ceremony at Lake Como in Italy. On January 11, 2021, they welcomed their first child, daughter Vamika. On February 15, 2024, the couple welcomed son Akaay. Kerala Government Spent Rs 13 Lakh To Invite Lionel Messi: Report

The Kerala government spent Rs 13 lakh on Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman's trip to Spain to invite Lionel Messi, contradicting claims of no public expenditure. The Kerala government's claim that no public money would be spent to bring football legend Lionel Messi to the state has been exposed as misleading. It has now emerged that the state government spent Rs 13 lakh on Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman's trip to Spain in September 2024, reportedly to invite Messi to Kerala. The Minister was accompanied by the Sports Department Secretary and the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs. This revelation contradicts Minister Abdurahiman's earlier statement that it would not cost the government 'even a single rupee" to invite Messi to Kerala. Earlier this week, the same Minister confirmed that Argentina's national football team, led by Messi, would not be visiting Kerala. The Argentinian team reportedly cited difficulties in traveling to the state in October, the only month the sponsor was willing to host the event. Previously, Abdurahiman had claimed that the team was likely to visit in October or November and would be treated as state guests, with the government covering their security, accommodation, and other logistics. In the football-crazy districts of Malappuram and Kozhikode, Argentina's national team enjoys massive support, a sentiment that soared after Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Minister, a native of Malappuram, had been actively working to bring Messi to Kerala. Sources indicate that one of the motivations behind the government's efforts was political, as local body elections are slated for December, and assembly elections are due in April-May next year, to elect 140 members to the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The exposure of this apparent bluff by the Minister has armed the opposition, with both the Congress-led UDF and BJP-led NDA accusing the Pinarayi Vijayan government of indulging in publicity stunts and misleading the public.
