Kerala Government Spent Rs 13 Lakh To Invite Lionel Messi: Report
The Kerala government's claim that no public money would be spent to bring football legend Lionel Messi to the state has been exposed as misleading.
It has now emerged that the state government spent Rs 13 lakh on Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman's trip to Spain in September 2024, reportedly to invite Messi to Kerala. The Minister was accompanied by the Sports Department Secretary and the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs.
This revelation contradicts Minister Abdurahiman's earlier statement that it would not cost the government 'even a single rupee" to invite Messi to Kerala.
Earlier this week, the same Minister confirmed that Argentina's national football team, led by Messi, would not be visiting Kerala. The Argentinian team reportedly cited difficulties in traveling to the state in October, the only month the sponsor was willing to host the event.
Previously, Abdurahiman had claimed that the team was likely to visit in October or November and would be treated as state guests, with the government covering their security, accommodation, and other logistics.
In the football-crazy districts of Malappuram and Kozhikode, Argentina's national team enjoys massive support, a sentiment that soared after Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The Minister, a native of Malappuram, had been actively working to bring Messi to Kerala.
Sources indicate that one of the motivations behind the government's efforts was political, as local body elections are slated for December, and assembly elections are due in April-May next year, to elect 140 members to the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
The exposure of this apparent bluff by the Minister has armed the opposition, with both the Congress-led UDF and BJP-led NDA accusing the Pinarayi Vijayan government of indulging in publicity stunts and misleading the public.

ECI again asks Rahul Gandhi to submit evidence of irregularity in Karnataka Assembly election under oath
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday (August 9, 2025) again asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to submit under oath the allegations made by him on voter roll manipulation in a Karnataka Assembly Constituency. Either Mr. Gandhi should give a declaration/oath, or apologise to the country, sources in the ECI said. Mr. Gandhi had in a press conference on Thursday claimed that 1,00,250 'fake votes' were created in the Mahadevapura Assembly seat under the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka, in order to ensure a win for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Following this, the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer had issued a letter to the Congress leader, asking him to submit evidence under oath under Rule 20 (3) (b) of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. The Rule says: 'The registration officer shall hold a summary inquiry into every claim or objection in respect of which notice has been given under Rule 19 and shall record his decision thereon.' 'The registration officer may in his discretion (a) require any claimant, objector or person objected to, to appear in person before him; (b) require that the evidence tendered by any person shall be given on oath and administer an oath for the purpose,' it also says. Experts on electoral law have, however, said the rule quoted by the ECI was not applicable in this context as a complaint under it had to be filed within 30 days of publication of electoral rolls.

'Not empty claims, he has unearthed vote theft': Aaditya Thackeray backs Rahul Gandhi's allegations on ECI
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday backed Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's recent allegations of large-scale "vote theft" during elections, asserting that the Election Commission is being "operated through the BJP office". "We had been saying this for a long time now that vote theft has indeed happened across the country, and that EC is operated through the BJP office. What Rahul Gandhi has shown are not empty claims. He has unearthed 'vote theft'..." Thackeray told the urged the Election Commission to engage in an open debate with Gandhi instead of issuing rebuttals."I think instead of challenging, EC should debate with Rahul information we have gathered is from their website itself. So, is their website and records incorrect?" he asked further. Earlier today, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-SCP chief Sharad Pawar said two people had approached him ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024, claiming they could guarantee 160 out of 288 seats. Speaking to the media, Pawar said that he arranged a meeting of these people with Rahul Gandhi, but ultimately both of them decided to turn down the offer, saying, "This is not our path." "I remember that before the Maharashtra Assembly elections were announced, two people came to meet me in told me that out of 288 seats in Maharashtra, we guarantee you 160 seats. I was surprised, to be honest, I had no doubts about the Election Commission," Pawar said here. "After that, I arranged a meeting with those people and Rahul Gandhi. The allegations, raised nine months after the Assembly elections results were announced, come amid Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleging "vote chori" (vote theft) across the country, with the Election Commission of India (ECI) 'colluding' with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Congress leader has also specifically raised concerns over the alleged addition of lakhs of voters in Maharashtra just months before the state polls in 2024, alleging the votes helped the Mahayuti coalition come into power. At a press conference on August 7, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were "choreographed" by the EC to benefit the BJP, which he said appeared "immune to anti-incumbency." Citing internal analysis, Gandhi said the Congress expected to win 16 seats in Karnataka but ended up with only nine. He said the Congress investigated seven unexpected losses, zeroing in on Mahadevapura, where he alleged vote theft involving 1,00,250 votes.
