Mamata cites Human Rights Watch report; slams alleged 'illegal deportation' of Bengali-Muslims in BJP-ruled states

New Indian Express17 hours ago
KOLKATA: Referring to a report by New York-based international human rights organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday strongly criticised the alleged deportation of Bengali-speaking Muslims from India without due process, calling it a "shame" for the country.
"The internationally reputed and New York-based multi-country NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) has also now highlighted the issue of harassment, persecution, and illegal deportation of Bengali-speaking people of India by the BJP governments in various states," Banerjee posted on X.
"The human rights organisation has released a report saying what we have been saying: Bengali-speaking Indians (of different castes and communities) are being arbitrarily abused and pushed out in a concerted manner by the BJP establishment," the CM added.

Iran executes two members of banned group for targeting infrastructure

Iran executed two members of the outlawed Mujahideen-e-Khalq opposition group for targeting civilian infrastructure with homemade projectiles, the judiciary news outlet Mizan reported on Sunday (July 27, 2025). Mehdi Hassani and Behrouz Ehsani-Eslamloo, "operational elements" of the MEK, were sentenced to death in a verdict upheld by the Supreme Court, Mizan said. "The terrorists, in coordination with MEK leaders, had set up a team house in Tehran, where they built launchers and hand-held mortars in line with the group's goals, fired projectiles heedlessly at citizens, homes, service and administrative facilities, educational and charity centres, and also carried out propaganda and information-gathering activities in support of the MEK," the report said. The defendants were indicted with "moharebeh", an Islamic term meaning waging war against God, destroying public property and "membership in a terrorist organisation with the aim of disrupting national security." Semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Sunday (July 27), that Ehsani-Eslamloo had been arrested in 2022 following an explosion at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology claimed by the MEK. The MEK, known in English as People's Mujahideen Organisation of Iran, was a powerful leftist-Islamist group that staged bombing campaigns against the shah's government and U.S. targets in the 1970s but ultimately fell out with the other factions of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Since then, the MEK has opposed the Islamic Republic, and its leadership in exile has been Paris-based. The group was listed as a terrorist organisation by the U.S. and the European Union until 2012.

BJP MP Ramesh refutes KTR's charges; alleges BRS sought BJP help to shield Kavitha

VISAKHAPATNAM: Anakapalle BJP MP CM Ramesh has strongly refuted allegations made by BRS working president KT Rama Rao, who accused him of colluding with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to secure government contracts. Responding to KTR's claims of a political nexus between the BJP and the Congress in Telangana, Ramesh dismissed any association with the Rs 1,660 crore contract allegedly awarded to Rithwik Company. . 'I have no connection to these contracts. The allegation that I influenced them through Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is entirely false,' he said, calling the charges baseless and politically motivated. Addressing the media on Saturday, the MP questioned the timing of KTR's accusations, attributing them to internal turmoil within the BRS. Drawing a comparison with Andhra Pradesh politics, he said, 'Just as Jagan Mohan Reddy faces opposition from his sister, KTR appears to be dealing with internal conflicts influencing his public statements.' Ramesh alleged that KTR had visited his residence in New Delhi. 'If he denies this, I am ready to release CCTV footage,' he said. According to him, during that meeting, KTR had proposed a merger of the BRS with the BJP in exchange for help in shielding BRS MLC K Kavitha from corruption probes. 'I informed senior BJP leaders about the conversation and made it clear that I had no interest in supporting a corrupt party,' he stated.

KTR alleges quid pro quo between CM Revanth, BJP MP Ramesh over Rs 1,660 crore contract

HYDERABAD: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Saturday reiterated his allegation that the Revanth Reddy government gave a Rs 1,660 crore road contract to BJP MP CM Ramesh. In return, the BJP-led Central government awarded a Rs 1,137 crore AMRUT contract to the brother-in-law of the chief minister, he claimed. 'Could there be a worse form of opportunistic politics than this? Could there be a more shameful quid pro quo? After I exposed the shady dealings of both Revanth and Ramesh, they are now in disarray — like rats caught in a trap, fighting to save themselves,' he said and wondered: 'A road for a non-existent Future City? And a Rs 1,660 crore contract for it?' 'They mortgaged HCU (Hyderabad Central University) lands to secure `10,000 crore in loans, and to reward those who facilitated this shady deal, they created a road out of nowhere. What I said then has now been proven true. With their corruption exposed, they are spinning false stories to divert public attention,' he alleged. 'Breaking rules and handing over massive contracts to favoured companies — this is second nature to your (Ramesh's) friend Revanth Reddy. It is now clear that the Rs 1,660 crore contract is a return gift to your friend for helping loot Rs 10,000 crore,' said the BRS working president.
