From selling marijuana to shaping Tamil cinema: Everything you should know about the incredible journey of director Shankar
Shankar
celebrates his 62nd birthday today (Aug 17). Although there are criticisms that he has regressed a bit in his creativity, he cannot be denied as one of the pioneers who took Tamil cinema to world standards.
He was the one who pioneered the term "grandeur" by using technology in an innovative way. After working as an assistant director to S.A. Chandrasekhar and Pavithran, he made his directorial debut with the film 'Gentleman.' The film was a success and also caused social criticism.
A director who blended technology, social issues, and visuals
After that, Shankar gave hit after hit with films like 'Kadhalan,' 'Jeans,' and 'Indian.' The way he used graphics in Jeans amazed the Indian film industry.
He presented seven wonders and entertained Tamil cinema and the world. Shankar was a man who made great use of even the minimal technology available at the time. The fact that he planned a film like Robot as early as the 90s is a testament to his imagination and pioneering thinking.
During that period, everyone from leading actors to newcomers looked forward to working with him at least once.
His struggles before films
But Shankar did not come to this height easily. After studying engineering, he planned to work in America. But that did not happen. According to Filmibeat, he failed in many small jobs, started a business and lost it, and became very frustrated in life. He also got caught up in the dangerous path of selling marijuana and lost all his money. In that environment, he shaved his head in
Tirupati
and returned to Chennai, joined a drama group, and showcased his mimicry and comedy talents.

It was there that S.A. Chandrasekhar discovered him.
Turning point: joining drama, spotted by S.A. Chandrasekhar
While working with SAC, Shankar, who wanted to be an actor, got a room from him by mistake. But it was that room that brought out the true director in him. He then worked with Pavithran and forged a path of his own with Gentleman. Combining social issues and grand visuals, he gave Tamil audiences a new kind of cinema.
Despite setbacks, Shankar remains a visionary with an awaited comeback
Today, even though the last few films he directed failed, criticism and ridicule cannot push him away. Because failure is no stranger to him. Fans and critics are confident that Shankar, who has always tried new things, will soon make a strong comeback. Shankar's name will forever be remembered in history as the first director who planted the seeds of excellence through his films.

Being a mother does not mean it's a career break: Hariprriya Simha
When it came to introducing their baby to the world, Hariprriya and Vasishta Simha had a carefully thought-out plan. 'We wanted to wait because, first, both Vasishta and I believe in drishti (evil eye), and second, we felt he was too young to be exposed to the world. Now that he has completed six months, we feel it's the right time to introduce our little one to everyone,' shares Hariprriya. They named him Viprah N Simha, which translates to 'the enlightened one'. 'It also has VIP in it, because he truly is the most important person in our lives,' she smiles. In a chat with us, she talks about the joys of motherhood, the values she hopes to instil in her child, and how becoming a mother has strengthened her personally and professionally. Excerpts: Both Vasishta and I come from an old-school mindset. Viprah will grow up with the very values that our parents instilled in us Hariprriya Simha 'VIPRAH WILL GROW UP WITH THE VALUES THAT OUR PARENTS HAVE INSTILLED IN US' Hariprriya tells us, 'Both Vasishta and I come from an old-school mindset. We are extremely attached to our families and complete home birds. My mother instilled in me early on that habbas (festivals) must always be celebrated with family. Even during shoots, I would fly home just to join them and head back soon after. It's the same with Vasishta. Now Viprah will grow up with these very values. Especially after becoming a mother, I've realised that traditions and values mean more to me than ever before. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo ' 'TODAY, BEING A MOTHER IS NO LONGER VIEWED AS A CAREER BREAKER' Hariprriya is equally firm that motherhood does not diminish her professional identity. 'Earlier, there was a perception that motherhood would end an actress's career. But today, things are changing for the better. Audiences, filmmakers, and the industry as a whole are more accepting. Motherhood has only made me stronger, more focused, and even more passionate about my craft,' she says. 'The actor in me can never die. I shot for a brand 15 days into my delivery. I've also been listening to scripts, and most have either been of me playing an expectant mom or a mother. I want roles that go beyond this, so when I find one, I'll take it up. Viprah is already used to travelling with us, so I'll take him on set when I go back on sets,' she smiles. Earlier there was a perception that motherhood would en an actor's career. ‘Class and decency aren't his strengths,' ‘Always resort to personal attacks': Kaneria slams Pakistan teammate Afridi, backs Irfan Pathan
Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has voiced his support for ex-India cricketer Irfan Pathan when he opened up on his heated exchange with former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi. The all-rounder from Baroda divulged that Afridi often tried to provoke him with sharp remarks and personal comments while highlighting some of the intense moments they shared both on and off the field. Coming in Irfan's support is Afridi's teammate in the Pakistan cricket team, Kaneria, who said Afridi has always resorted to 'personal attacks' and that 'class and decency are not his strengths'. 'Irfan bhai, you're absolutely right. He always resorts to personal attacks, be it on someone's family or their religion. Class and decency clearly aren't his strengths,' Kaneria posted on X, formerly Twitter. Earlier, Pathan narrated an incident from the 2006 Pakistan tour, when both the Indian and Pakistani teams were flying together from Karachi to Lahore. 'During the 2006 tour, we were flying from Karachi to Lahore. Both teams were travelling together. Afridi came and put his hand on my head and messed up my hair. He asked me, 'How are you kid?'' Pathan recalled during the interview with Lallantop. 'I thought since when did you become my father. He behaved like a child. I was neither talking to him nor saying anything. After this Afridi said some bad things to me. His seat was near mine.' Irfan explained how he responded, which silenced Afridi for the rest of the flight. 'Pakistan allrounder Abdul Razzaq was sitting with me then. I asked him what kind of meat is available here. He told me meat of different animals are available. After this I asked whether dog meat is available. Razzaq was surprised to hear me and said, 'Hey Irfan why are you saying this?' To this, Pathan replied: ''He (Afridi) has eaten dog meat, he has been barking for so long'. 'After this Afridi could not say anything. If he said anything I would have said look he is barking more,' recalled Pathan with a chuckle.

Coolie Day 5 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth's crime-drama falters on 1st Monday after record extended Kollywood opening weekend
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth, had a record Kollywood opening weekend of Rs 227.25 crore. Not just that, it also took a record Kollywood global opening of Rs 375 crore. While the weekend was record-breaking, the numbers were slightly under expectations, given how big the movie opened. Based on the opening day, the weekend numbers should have been close to Rs 250 crore in India and over Rs 400 crore worldwide. Coolie Falters On 1st Monday By Grossing Just Rs 12 Crore The mixed word of mouth took a toll on the Lokesh Kanagaraj movie. After the already slumping weekend trend, the movie grossed just Rs 12 crore on day 6. The numbers are 80 percent down from Independence Day Friday and that's alarming. If the movie continues to drop like this, a Rs 300 crore gross India final can be a struggle. Also, that would mean that a Rs 500 crore gross worldwide finish would become impossible, as the highest that Coolie can do at the international box office based on its current trend is USD 21 million (Rs 183 crore gross). The collections in Tamil Nadu will likely end under that of Good Bad Ugly. The collections in Kerala shall end up being half of what Jailer did in 2023. The film's exceptional Karnataka and APTS collections over the opening weekend should ensure that the film breaks even or atleast comes very close to it. The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under Day India Gross Collections Thursday Rs 75.50 crore Friday Rs 63.25 crore Saturday Rs 47 crore Sunday Rs 41.50 crore Monday Rs 12 crore Total Rs 239.25 crore gross in 5 days Coolie Will End Up As One Of The Top 5 Highest Grossing Kollywood Movies Worldwide But The Final Result Will Be Seen As Underwhelming Coolie, despite putting up record-breaking initial collections and being a film that will surely be a part of the top 5 highest grossing Tamil movies at the worldwide box office, will be seen as an underwhelmer because the expectations were of a record grosser. The Tamil industry will have to wait for Jailer 2 or Jana Nayagan to really see its potential unleashed again.
