Lawrence Shankland sticks with Hearts

Rhyl Journala day ago
The 29-year-old Scotland forward – who has scored 68 goals since arriving from Belgian side Beerschot three years ago – looked to be on his way out of Tynecastle after several rounds of negotiations over the past 18 months failed to result in an agreement
However, after becoming a free agent this summer and exploring his options, Shankland has been persuaded by recently-installed manager Derek McInnes to accept an offer to become the club's highest-paid player.

The striker flew out to Spain on Wednesday evening to meet up with the Hearts squad at their pre-season training base and the Jambos announced on Thursday afternoon that he has agreed a deal until 2028, bringing to an end a long-running contract saga.
'Lawrence's not only been ingrained in the club the last few years, he's been a big player for the club, knows his way about the Premiership, knows his way to goal,' McInnes told the Hearts website.
'It just made so much sense on so many levels for me. I've known Lawrence since he was a young boy and I know how important family is to him and how important being happy is.
'I always felt that that was a huge advantage for us. Not only does he enjoy his time at Hearts, those family connections are always very strong.'
Shankland marked his first campaign at the club by becoming the first Hearts player in 31 years to score more than 20 goals in a season and then netted 31 goals in 2023-24 to earn himself every Scottish Premiership Player of the Year award available and secure a place in the Scotland squad for Euro 2024.
He's back.

The former Ayr and Dundee United forward's most recent campaign was more of a struggle in front of goal and he incurred the wrath of some fans after a costly Conference League penalty miss away to Cercle Brugge in November, although he did notch five times in his final five appearances to leave supporters clinging to the hope that he might decide to remain at Tynecastle.
The retention of their most prolific forward of the 21st century represents a significant coup at a time when Hearts are embarking on an exciting new era in partnership with Jamestown Analytics and with Brighton owner Tony Bloom on board as a minority investor.
'I do feel that having that recognised number no.9, a goal scorer with a real pedigree, Scotland internationalist, the motivation for Lawrence to do well here at not only a club that he loves, a club that he's happy with,' added McInnes.
'You see the way he's embraced his team-mates this morning. He's a really popular boy, but he's got so much to do here. In my time at Hearts, I want to make sure it's successful and I want Lawrence to feel exactly the same and he does.
'We want to be lifting silverware. We want to be going into group stages in Europe and we want to have a consistent thing going here and that is the driver for all of us. I do feel that having Lawrence in the building gives us a better chance of achieving all that.'

JOHNNY BE GOOD Queen's Park 0 Celtic 1 – Rodgers' men kick off pre-season with easy win as Johnny Kenny nets in windy Mount Florida Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CALLUM McGREGOR has stopped crying his heart out. Some 41 days after he wiped treble tears from his eyes, the Celtic skipper didn't look back in anger in the shadows of Hampden. McGregor was back with his team-mates to lead Brendan Rodgers' latest premiership title masterplan. The match won't Live Forever in the minds of anyone who was here. But some might say McGregor cast no shadow against the Championship side in this first friendly win of preseason. Okay, okay, that's quite enough of the Oasis puns. This was serious stuff for Rodgers and Co as they kicked off their preparations for the new season with an easy victory. Striker Johnny Kenny's first-half strike was the only goal off the game with Sean Crighton's men grafting hard all night. But it was as comfortable as it could have got for the Premiership's defending champions. The Celts boss was still without his international players for this friendly. The likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Alistair Johnston, Liam Scales, Kieran Tierney, Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah have all yet to report back from their summer break. Cameron Carter-Vickers, James Forrest and Jota are still out injured. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up There was also no Nicolas Kuhn at Lesser, with the German winger on the verge of completing a £17million move to Serie A outfit Como. Ironically, that deal could see him play AGAINST Celtic in just a few weeks when Rodgers takes his squad to Italy for more a pre-season action. There will be a bounce game in Cork early next week and then a training camp in Portugal before that. And it's fair to assume the players are probably looking forward to some warm-weather sessions. Because July in Scotland right now could be mistaken for November given the wind and rain that was swirling around Glasgow.. Both teams almost stood shivering as they paid tribute to Lisbon Lion, John Clark, with a minute of applause before kick-off for the club legend whose funeral service had been held earlier in the day. In all fairness, by the time the game got going, the 898 fans who managed to get tickets were given a decent amount of attacking football to watch. It largely went in the one direction. Queen's keeper Calum Ferie - who would have been a hero to the Celts supporters with his man of the match display against Rangers in last season's Scottish Cup shock - didn't exactly have countless saves to make in the first-half by any stretch of the imagination. And he maybe felt a little gutted that he conceded after 20 minutes given how hard his defenders in front of him were working. 4 But Celtic were still well worth their half-time lead given how much possession they had. Johnny Kenny got the goal and it was a terrific finish from the young Irishman who continues to look the part in a hoops shirt. His sweeping finish high into the roof of the net gave Ferie no chance. At the other end, Ross Doohan was making his Celtic debut and he only had one real stop to make - from a shot from Jamie Bradley - which he did comfortably. The ex-Aberdeen goalkeeper was the only away player who stayed on for the second-half. Rodgers took all of his outfield men off at half-time and gave ten kids the opportunity to catch his eye. Stephen Welsh took the skipper's armband from McGregor. With so many teenagers out on the park it was a chance for Queen's to compete more. But the eager rookies continued to dominate the ball with Kyle Ure, Conor Daly, Sean McArdle and Ben Summers the ones to watch. They all oozed class and confidence on and off the ball as they were clearly determined to impress their gaffer. Striker Samuel Isiguzo should have made it 2-0 in the closing stages but his shot lacked power to beat Ferie. After the miss, he could have been forgiven for turning to cigarettes and alcohol. Sorry. Killie beat Ayr in McKenzie's testimonial, despite his penalty miss

Kilmarnock defeated rivals Ayr United in Rory McKenzie's testimonial match, despite the midfielder missing a penalty. Stuart Kettlewell's side were awarded a spot-kick on the cusp of half-time and McKenzie - who was being recognised for 14 years of service at Rugby Park - stepped up to take it, but saw his effort saved by Ayr's goalkeeper, David didn't take long though for the Premiership side to take the lead, with summer signing Greg Kiltie firing Killie ahead one minute into the second departed the field on the hour mark to a sea of applause and adulation from the home crowd.

Hearts' are close to signing both Pierre Landry Kabore and Sabah Kerjota as the club's double transfer move looks set to pay off. It is understood both wingers are preparing to move to Tynecastle Park and could be in Edinburgh as early as next week. Negotiations for Kabore and Kerjota have gone smoothly as Hearts look to strengthen the right side of their forward line. Both men favour the right flank, although Kabore is also effective through the middle. Kabore's club in Estonia, JK Narva Trans, are expecting his departure after 12 goals and two assists from 15 league appearances so far this season. He also scored 10 goals in five cup games for the Meistriliiga side. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Kerjota, who plays with Italian Serie C club US Sambenedettese, is poised to join Kabore in Scotland. The 23-year-old is keen to play top-flight football after helping Sambenedettese gain promotion from the regional leagues last season. He and Kabore, also 23, will compete for the right-sided berth in Gorgie provided there is no unexpected late setback with their deals. Both players were identified by Hearts' recruitment partner, Jamestown Analytics, as talents who have the potential to develop further. Narva Trans, who play in Estonia's top flight, signed Kabore from FC D'Abodo in Ivory Coast last year. His previous clubs include Sonabel, Salitas and ASF Bobo in Burkina Faso. He holds two caps for his country and is regarded as one of their most promising young players. Kerjota's contract at Sambenedettese runs until 2028 and Hearts are paying a fee to bring him to Scotland. He scored 10 goals and claimed 11 assists last season to help his club achieve promotion. 'Talks are advanced or we wouldn't talk about it but nothing is certain,' said the Sambenedettese sporting director Stefano De Angelis earlier this week. 'We'll evaluate everything. If negotiations are concluded it'll be beneficial for the player because this is a great opportunity for him but it has to be beneficial for Sab, too.'If that's the case then credit to the player and his agent. We have great relations with them and everyone has tried to get the best possible conditions. Otherwise, we'll be very happy to keep Kerjota with us.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hearts transfer move for Islam Chesnokov still a priority Tynecastle officials still want a deal this summer for the Kazakhstan winger Islam Chesnokov. However, that is proving difficult as his club, Tobol Kostanay, do not want him to leave. He has already agreed a pre-contract to join Hearts later this year, but the captures of Kabore and Kerjota would give the team much-needed competition on the right side immediately. Hearts are due to start their competitive season a week on Saturday when they host Dunfermline in the Premier Sports Cup. They fly home from a week-long training camp in Spain tomorrow after playing two matches - a 1-1 draw with Premiership counterparts St Mirren and a 3-1 win over English League Two side Crawley Town.
