BJP not against Muslims, wants no riots in state: New BJP chief
In his first speech after being elected to the post, the Rajya Sabha MP also outlined the BJP's upward trajectory in West Bengal in the past decade and hit out at the TMC government in the state for allegedly failing to give jobs to youths, and security to women.
'BJP's fight is not against Muslims. Those who hold stones in their hands, the BJP wants to replace the stones with books. We want a Bengal where Muharram and Durga Puja visarjan (immersion) processions can go side by side without any riots taking place,' Bhattacharya said at an event where he was officially anointed the new state BJP chief. His predecessor Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of Opposition in Assembly Suvendu Adhikari were present. Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, who was in charge of the election process, also attended the event held at Kolkata's Science City.
Narrating the BJP's growth, Bhattacharya said: 'From two MLAs to now 303, people of Bengal have given us a special place. People of Bengal have understood that it is the BJP that can defeat the TMC.'
Hitting out at the TMC government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the new state BJP chief said: 'People of Bengal want their family, who are migrant labourers, to return home. Over 17,000 people have lost their jobs under this government. They are on the streets. Once the BJP comes to power, no migrant labour will have to leave the state,' he said.
Bhattacharya promised to 'give justice' to people hit by the post-poll violence in 2021. 'No one will be spared. They will be brought to justice even from patal lok (underworld) once the BJP comes to power in the state,' he said.
Claiming that people of Bengal want 'mukti' (liberation) from the TMC government, he said, '2026 Assembly poll is not just an election, but a fight for Bengal.'
Addressing the factionalism in the state unit of his party — his main challenge before the Assembly elections next year, Bhattacharya stressed on unity, urging the old generation to trust the new and the new to remember the contributions of those who built the party.
'The old must make space for the entry of new, and the new generation must understand the struggle they endured when the BJP had no foothold in Bengal… This fight can in no way be one-sided anymore. Fight the war. The 2026 election is about TMC's visarjan (immersion),' he said.
His predecessor and Union minister, Sukanta Majumdar, who held the post for the last four years, said: 'This is a continuous relay race… Rahul Sinha, then Dilip Ghosh, then me, and now Samik Bhattacharya. I feel honoured today. Sukanta Majumdar is and will always be there with you all. With Samik Bhattacharya, we will fight this battle together.'
'We will continue to fight to uproot Mamata Banerjee's government… Be ready to retaliate and fight back in 2026, unlike 2021 when the BJP was attacked. Don't get hit this time,' he cautioned.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, however, made an aggressive pitch on consolidating Hindu votes and launched a broadside against the TMC government. Thanking all previous state BJP chiefs, except his bête noire Dilip Ghosh, Adhikari said: 'I am rendering both hands to strengthen the party… To form the government, we just need 4 to 5 per cent vote from now on. Develop relata ionship with voters, go door to door, meet them, and have control at the booth level. This minority appeaser, corrupt government should be uprooted. No woman is safe. Kanya bachao, Mamata Bhagao (Save girls, oust Mamata)… Hindu bachao, Mamata bhagao (Save Hindus, oust Mamata). Hindu jaago… badla amay nite hobe (wake up Hindus… we have to avenge).'
Meanwhile, Ravi Shankar Prasad praised Bhattacharya, calling him a 'great communicator. 'Under his leadership, the 2026 Assembly election will be fought. It might be surprising for other political parties, but the BJP is not a family party. BJP as a party is a family… We want a BJP government in Bengal so that people can live safely. Bengal has become worse under the TMC and Mamata Banerjee,' he added.
Bhattacharya, 61, has over four decades of political experience. He started his career in 1971 with the RSS in Howrah and subsequently moved to the BJP. He steadily rose through the ranks and gradually emerged as one of the party's most popular faces in the state in the 1990s because of his strong oratory skills.
Bhattacharya also served as the general secretary of the Bengal BJP for three terms. In 2014, he won the Basirhat Dakshin Assembly bypoll and was a legislator for just over a year. Last year, he was sent to the Upper House.

Government counters Opposition campaign that delayed emergency response caused hospital collapse death
The State government appeared to scramble to contradict the Opposition's strident campaign that the 'callous delay' in search and rescue operations had cost the life of Bindu, 52, the sole fatality in the partial collapse of a building on the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) campus on Thursday. Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan, who called on Bindu's bereaved family at Thalayolaparambu on Friday, told reporters that the post-mortem report indicated Bindu had died instantaneously. 'She had suffered a fatal head injury from the falling debris,' he said. Mr. Vasavan termed the Congress's propaganda that the government's uncaring inference that no one was under the debris had caused Bindu to suffer a lingering death as 'a maliciously misleading lie.' He said Bindu was acting as a bystander for her daughter, Veena, who required a costly and protracted treatment, including complicated surgeries, when the tragedy struck. 'Free of cost' Mr. Vasavan said Apollo Hospital would treat Ms. Veena free of cost. The government would provide temporary employment to Bindu's son. The Cabinet on July 11 will declare the compensation amount for Bindu's family based on the report submitted by the Kottayam Collector. Quoting a timeline, Mr. Vasavan said the Ministers and officials had reached the accident site within minutes of the collapse. He told the decades-old building lacked a separate pathway for emergency responders. 'Firefighters had to cut through an iron barricade to move earth movers to the spot for the search and rescue mission. Any attempt to punch a way through the structure to reach the accident site would have caused further mishap,' he said. The administration evacuated 360 patients from six wards to a safer block. The two injured individuals were transferred to critical care units. Mr. Vasavan accused the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of politicising the tragedy for 'cheap media mileage.' He criticised the Congress for laying siege to the hospital and blocking the ambulance carrying Bindu's dead body to her home. Organ transplants Mr. Vasavan also criticised the Congress and the BJP for seeking to tarnish the reputation of the hospital, which was at the forefront of organ transplants and cardiothoracic surgeries in the country. 'A liver transplant at the MCH costs only ₹3 lakh compared to ₹50 lakh charged by a corporate hospital,' he added. He also criticised the Congress and the BJP for allegedly disparaging hospital superintendent T.K. Jayakumar. 'Dr. Jayakumar, a winner of Kerala Shree and the State government's best doctor award, has conducted upwards of 2,000 heart surgeries, including valve replacement. He is instrumental in executing a ₹526-crore hospital development project, including the 14 surgical theatres, eight super speciality theatres and over 500 beds,' Mr. Vasavan said.

Cooch Behar TMC neta shot at, BJP MLA's son, driver arrested
Jalpaiguri: A BJP MLA's son and his driver were arrested on Friday following an attack on a Cooch Behar Trinamool neta. Raju Dey, karmadhyaksha of Cooch Behar Block 2 Panchayat Samity, was travelling to his home on his bike when four persons shot at him near Jhinaidanga around 11 pm on Thursday, police said. The bullet hit Dey on his right shoulder. He underwent a surgery early on Friday at a private nursing home. His condition is said to be stable. Besides arresting Cooch Behar (Uttar) Sukumar Roy's son Subhankar and his driver Uttam Gupta, cops have also impounded the black SUV used by the attackers. An FIR has been lodged against four people. "The vehicle belongs to MLA Roy. Witnesses saw his son in the car at the time of the incident," a police officer said. TMC workers staged protests across the district, demanding punishment for culprits. "This is an exceptional case where the son of a BJP MLA is trying to kill our man. We would expect the governor and the NHRC to visit Cooch Behar as they do every time BJP blames our party," said TMC district president Avijit Dey Bhowmik. The MLA, however, said that the arrest of his son and the seizing of his car were parts of an effort to malign him. "With the assembly polls near, TMC netas have become desperate to gain ground in the district, especially in my constituency, as they know they will lose this time as well. They are therefore using cops to do what they do best," Roy said, claiming Dey was shot in factional fight.

HC allows 2 Sufi groups to take out Muharram processions in Howrah
Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday granted permission to two Sufi groups to take out Muharram processions in Howrah on Sunday. The court, however, kept the Khajutty Amtala "Quarbala" out of bounds for both processions. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed the two groups to take out processions in two different routes and two different timings. The court held that the "Quarbala" was the "conflict point" and thus no group would be allowed at the spot. Justice Ghosh left it to the police to decide on the end points of the two processions. The president of the organisation submitted before court that he would ensure that no one from South 24 Parganas participated in the procession. Justice Ghosh directed police to disperse participants in the event of a breach of peace.
