South African motorists may have to dig deeper into their pockets in July, as another potential fuel price hike looms.
According to mid-June data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), Petrol 95 is under-recovering by about 47 cents per litre, and Petrol 93 by around 43 cents.
Diesel prices are showing larger under-recoveries of approximately 69 and 71 cents per litre for the two types respectively. Illuminating paraffin is also under-recovering by roughly 57 cents per litre.
An under-recovery occurs when fuel levies do not fully cover the rising global oil prices and currency fluctuations, resulting in higher pump prices to compensate for the shortfall.
These are only projections based on mid-month data and not final figures. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will confirm the official prices just before they take effect in July.
The situation is a result of a sharp jump in Brent crude prices because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran.
The conflict began last week when Israel launched strikes against Iran, targeting its nuclear and military facilities. These strikes resulted in the deaths of the head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and several top nuclear scientists.
The situation was made worse when the US joined the war by launching an attack on Iranian nuclear sites with US President Donald Trump saying they had "totally obliterated" Iran's main nuclear sites.
"Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success," Trump said.
According to Oxford Economics since the war began Brent crude oil prices spiked by over 10%.
Oxford Economics is a "leading global economic advisory firm, providing data-driven insights and forecasts".
"The Brent crude oil price spiked by over 10% as the conflict started and remains elevated in the $70-$78 per barrel range at the time of writing, well above pre-escalation levels.
"The most severe scenario is a closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Around one-third of all seaborne oil passes through this chokepoint, and a shutdown would freeze oil exports from Kuwait and Qatar, and restrict exports from Iraq, the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia".

A walk through the Gupta's properties before auction day
Three properties formerly owned by the controversial Gupta family in Saxonwold, Johannesburg, are set to be auctioned individually on July 24. Located within a single estate, the homes include a three-storey mansion, a single-storey house with three bedrooms, and a 17-bedroom luxury dwelling. The properties once served as the Gupta family's South African residence during their rise to political influence. During a recent media tour hosted by the auctioneers tasked with selling the properties, remnants of their lifestyle, from unused furniture to private prayer rooms and locked safes, offered a rare glimpse into the spaces they left behind when they departed the country in 2018 under a cloud of state capture allegations. The Saxonwold compound was where the Gupta family wined and dined politicians in what was widely viewed as part of a strategy to capture state influence and secure government contracts. The Guptas fled South Africa and are being pursued by the government to face criminal charges. First on the tour is house number five, a three-storey compound known among staff and auctioneers as 'the white house'. From the outside, it appears as if the façade is weeping, the white paint peeling and curling off the walls like old wallpaper, revealing the brick beneath. You are not welcomed by grandeur. Instead, it's the blue park village auction posters pasted on pillars that meet your eye first, declaring the property's impending fate. Inside, the house feels cold. Not just in temperature but in spirit. There is a faint scent of abandonment and stale air that clings to the corridors. Light filters through thick curtains and dust dancing in the rays. The house has eight bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Some rooms still cradle remnants of life, dusty bed sheets, half-burnt candles, unopened shower gels and forgotten toys. It's like time hit pause, but only for some things. In one room, a prayer space is preserved with uncanny stillness. Two red chairs, incense, salts, candles and a picture of their deity remain, untouched. It feels sacred almost off-limits even now. All the electronics have been ripped from the walls. Wires dangle where televisions used to hang. Yet old-school telephones remain beside each bed. There is mould in corners of the bedrooms, fed by roof leaks and disuse. Portraits signed by artist June Tuckett, hang slightly skew on the walls. According to Art Market Tuckett is an 'artist born in South Africa in 1944. The artist's works have gone up for sale at public auction 75 times, mostly in the painting category.' The indoor swimming pool still holds water, stagnant, cloudy and green. At the back, the garden remains lush with trees and flowers, but the grass is beginning to die. Nature is trying to reclaim what power it has left behind.

Attack on US base no threat to Qatar, says Iran

IRAN'S National Security Council says a major attack on US military base in Qatar does not "pose any threat" to its Gulf neighbour. "In response to the US aggressive and insolent action against Iran's nuclear sites and facilities, a few hours ago, the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran struck the US air base in Al-Udeid, Qatar," the council said in a statement, adding that the number of missiles used "was the same as the number of bombs that the US had used in attacking Iran's nuclear facilities". "This action does not pose any threat to our friendly and brotherly country, Qatar," it added. Explosions could be heard over Doha, shortly after Qatar, which hosts the biggest US base in the Middle East, suspended air traffic as Iran threatened retaliation for US strikes on its nuclear sites. AFP journalists heard several rounds of blasts in central Doha and across the Qatari capital, with projectiles stopped by interceptors illuminating the night sky. Gas-rich Qatar, which lies 190 kilometres (120 miles) south of Iran across the Gulf, is home to the United States' largest military base in the region, Al Udeid, which hosts the regional headquarters of the Pentagon's Central Command. "The competent authorities announce the temporary suspension of air traffic in the country's airspace, as part of a set of precautionary measures taken based on developments in the region," the foreign ministry said. James Robertson and the legend of Big Blue
'No one has a political opinion about a bottle of chutney' Just like Andy Warhol was both the curator and creator of American pop art, so too has James Robertson been the keeper of Mzansi's iconography. He built a brand around it, and while he can't spell to save his life, his eye for colour and instinct for shape, his love for South Africa has created a brand with almost a cult following. It's called Big Blue. It began with a single shop. Then one became three. Then, like clockwork, they opened a new one every year until the Covid-19 pandemic got in the way. Today there are 24 stores and maybe, if things go well, another one before the year is out. Big Blue is hard to define, said Robertson. It's not just clothing, although that's a big part of it. It's not just novelty gifts, although they've built a large wholesale business around those too. It's more of a feeling. One part humour, one part memory, one part garments. 'I just wanted to work for myself' 'We never set out to make some huge retail empire,' said Robertson. 'I just wanted to work for myself. My dad did, and I admired that. I didn't have a specific skill. Or I didn't know what it was yet.' 'I started helping out with self-help craft projects in Venda. I'd sell their products at flea markets and give feedback to the crafters about what was selling, what needed changing. Bigger, smaller, better colours. That sort of thing.' His late business and life partner had the stall next door to him at these markets. It's how they met. Eventually, they joined forces in business too. Both cashed in their pensions. Big Blue was the offspring of the pairing. From the get-go Robertson said, the intention was to make local products with a purpose. 'We wanted to help keep people working. But we also knew that if the business didn't make money, it wouldn't survive. So yes, we cared. But we were also in it to turn a profit.' 'No one has a political opinion about a bottle of chutney' A women's clothing line materialised. Then came the prints and T-shirts of South African brands and popular culture icons. It took off faster than the pair ever imagined. 'We realised you can't use national icons like you can in America. If you print the Union Buildings, half the country loves it, half don't. But things like Oros or Mrs Ball's, things everyone grew up with, that hit a cultural and patriotic nerve. No one has a political opinion about a bottle of chutney,' he said. As the business grew, so did the challenges. Local production, while ideal, wasn't always possible. 'There's a lack of proper equipment. Not enough investment in technology. Skills are disappearing. Sometimes we've had no choice but to produce certain things offshore. But everything is still developing here. The ideas are South African. The humour, the references, the tone.' The bulk of Big Blue's stock is still manufactured locally. 'We only use natural fabrics. No synthetics. And we don't overproduce. If anything, we make too little. But that means we don't sit with piles of stock we have to dump on sale. People value the product more when it doesn't feel disposable.' The brand is also known for its weird and wonderful novelties. 'It's hard to compete just on clothing, so we leaned into design-led gifting,' he said. 'Especially the cheeky stuff. There isn't really a novelty industry here, so we built one. The big stores shy away from four-letter words. We don't.' Business is still done at home Robertson runs the business from his home on a small holding just outside Fourways in Sandton. It's idyllic. Inside, his home is stately, almost a slap-bang of creative energy everywhere. 'We create everything here. It's where the planning, design and distribution happen. Most of the actual production is in Johannesburg, some in Durban and Cape Town.' Outside work, Robertson is a reader. He has a massive library at home, too. 'I'll read before I do just about anything else. I don't cook. I don't party. I read. And recently, I've gotten into cows. Which is turning into a bit of a problem.' In fact, there are cow statues all over his garden and along with a friend, he's just bought a small herd, too. Creativity runs in his family. His sister, Claire Robertson, is a novelist and a former sub-editor at a Sunday newspaper. 'Everyone in my family is good with words. I'm not. I can't spell. I don't write great emails.
