Ajinkya Rahane decides not to continue in massive career announcement: ‘I believe it's the right time to…'
"Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it's the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I've decided not to continue in the captaincy role," Rahane wrote on X.
The 37-year-old, however, made it clear that he has no plans of calling it quits and will remain committed to serve the Mumbai team in all formats as a batter. "I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with Mumbai to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season," he added.
Under Rahane's leadership, Mumbai won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last season, and he was also the tournament's highest run-scorer. Mumbai also made it to the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy, where they lost to Vidharbha by 90 runs.
Rahane, 37, last played competitive cricket during the IPL 2025, scoring 390 runs from 13 matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders. As Rahane has now decided to quit as Mumbai captain, it will be interesting to see whether KKR decide to change their captain ahead of next season.

Sachin content to let his bat do the talking
There is nothing more frustrating for a young cricketer than missing a whole season just when things are starting to align. Tamil Nadu's B. Sachin has had to undergo one such trying phase. The 21-year-old made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2023-24 season, but an ACL knee injury during a TNPL match last year meant he had to undergo surgery, which sidelined him for seven months. Now the left-hander is back doing what he does best and letting his bat do the talking. Sachin's sensational century helped TNCA XI stun Mumbai by two wickets in the first round of the Buchi Babu tournament, chasing 266 in 45 overs. 'During the first two months, I felt down and out. I could not even sleep properly. But I realised later that I should be grateful for that period. Without it, I would not have understood the importance of mental strength,' said Sachin about the challenges of recovering from surgery. 'I just tried to give my 100 per cent during rehab. I just kept counting every day. I started by facing underarm deliveries, but I didn't get into rhythm immediately, and it took me a month. I struggled a lot during that period and thought a lot about my batting.' Though he failed to shine in his four outings for TN in the premier domestic tournament, he is widely considered one of the promising batters in the state and the knock on Wednesday only reinforced his reputation. He scored a double-hundred in his comeback game in the TNCA first division in March and then scored a century in the TNPL, showing his ability to adapt to different formats. With B. Sai Sudharsan expected to be on national duty, Sachin is making the right noises to get back into the TN set-up. The youngster, though, is not thinking too far ahead. 'I am not thinking much about (comeback) and just focused on looking at the ball and hitting it,' he said.

Ex-India Star Accuses Agarkar-Gambhir Of Bias Against Shreyas Iyer: 'Not Even...'
Last Updated: Subramaniam Badrinath alleges Ajit Agarkar's selection committee snubbed Shreyas Iyer for the 2025 Asia Cup due to a 'likeability factor'. Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has alleged that there was a 'likeability factor' in the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee's decision to exclude Shreyas Iyer from the 2025 Asia Cup squad. Badrinath said Agarkar's calling Shreyas 'unlucky' was taking a 'convenient route' to explain the big change. Shreyas took Punjab Kings to the final of IPL 2025 earlier this year, while also scoring 604 runs with a 175-plus strike rate. However, Agarkar said, they couldn't find anyone in the first 15 to make way for the Mumbaikar, and it was neither the selector's fault nor the batter's. 'He definitely deserved to get selected. Ajit Agarkar said he was unlucky but that's just a convenient route. Iyer has produced excellent numbers over the last two years and done brilliantly as a captain as well. Instead, they picked Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh for the No. 5 position. In the last one year, both have done virtually nothing, with poor numbers," Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel. 'This is not even a 50-50 decision. Shreyas Iyer should have definitely got a look-in. One can say he has batted at No. 3 for his IPL side. But he can easily play at No. 5 for India being an excellent player of spin and a great finisher," he said. 'Especially now, without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, his (Shreyas) experience and leadership is much needed in the team. More than unlucky, this feels like a likeability factor playing a role in selection," he added. Badrinath is not the first to suggest some ulterior motive behind Shreyas's snub. Former India assistant coach and part of the backroom staff when Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, Abhishek Nayar, also said that it seemed to him that the batter wasn't as liked as others in the squad. Neither has indicated who the favored one is that took Shreyas' place. The only other major change in the team from the last time it played was Shubman Gill coming in as a third opener (instead of Yashasvi Jaiswal) and being appointed the vice-captain. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Rahul, Siraj In Duleep Trophy? BCCI Cracks Whip On States For Excluding Them
Last Updated: BCCI domestic cricket, Duleep Trophy, Indian cricket team selection, state cricket associations, KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, central contracts The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has cracked the whip on the state associations for not selecting the available national stars, KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar, among others, for the upcoming 2025 Duleep Trophy season. In an email to all state associations, the BCCI's general manager of cricket operations, Abey Kuruvilla, reminded them of the need to uphold the competition's prestige by selecting the best available players. It follows the BCCI's orders from last season, making playing domestic cricket mandatory for all international stars during their breaks from the Indian team, as a condition for getting recognised by central contracts. 'To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it's imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked," Kuruvilla wrote in the email, as quoted by The Indian Express. The Duleep Trophy is a Zonal tournament with six zones. Teams are picked by Zonal selectors who are picked from the state associations. 'Participation in domestic matches: All players, contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into Team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI. In case any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament from the National coach and the chairman of selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case any leave is granted, the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason," he added. The Duleep Trophy begins on August 28. It's unclear whether South Zone picks an updated squad. The report said that some zonal selectors are hesitant about picking international players because they believe the tournament is a good chance to give opportunities to those who work hard in Ranji Trophy all year along. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
