Damson Idris is a serious actor, best known for his work in Snowfall and British films like Farming. But get him talking about cars and racing and Idris can't stop smiling… and he's especially exuberant when he's talking about his experiences making F1, in which he co-stars with Brad Pitt.

In the big-budget blockbuster, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), Idris plays an up-and-coming racer Noah Pearce, who is mentored by and clashes with an aging star named Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt. The movie, which opens on June 27 features appearances by top F1 drivers including Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, George Russell, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Saenz. While those elite drivers lent verisimilitude, Idris and Pitt did their own driving as Idris discussed in a recent video conversation.
What drew you to this movie?
I've been a fan of Brad my whole career, and Joe's work on Top Gun Maverick made this a no-brainer. But the biggest thing for me was I knew that we were going to be filming at the real Grand Prix races. So it was like a sneaky way for me to get free tickets to every Grand Prix.

Soprano-pianist duo end competition on high note with first prize

A soprano and pianist duo have taken home a top prize in North Yorkshire, after impressing judges with their performance. Scottish soprano Rachel Munro, and Singaporean pianist Jia Ning Ng, won first place in the Northern Aldborough Festival 2025 New Voices Singing Competition, whose final was held on Monday (June 16). The pair were awarded £5,000, along with paid recitals at next year's Northern Aldborough Festival and at Leeds Lieder and Harrogate International Festivals. Robert Ogden, director of the Northern Aldborough Festival and a member of the judging panel, said: "Rachel and Jia Ning made a wonderful partnership. "Even though she was one of the youngest entrants, Rachel already displays remarkable vocal maturity and quality, and is a composed performer. "She found wonderful support in Jia Ning's musical playing." The New Voices Competition was launched in 2023 to support emerging talent amid what a spokesperson described as "funding cuts the classical music sector faced."

'Jurassic World: Rebirth' brings fans back to dangerous dinosaur realm

By Francesca Halliwell and Danielle Broadway LONDON (Reuters) -Scarlett Johansson's role in "Jurassic World: Rebirth" made her recall her earliest memories of the dinosaur film franchise. The "Black Widow" actor recalled seeing the first "Jurassic Park" film at the movie theater when she was 10 years old. "It imprinted on me very deeply," she told Reuters at the London premiere at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square. "For the next three decades, I was like, I would have done anything to be in a Jurassic movie in any capacity," she added. The franchise, created by author Michael Crichton, has spawned several films, merchandising deals and video games. "Jurassic World: Rebirth," directed by Gareth Edwards, follows a team of specialists that embarks on an expedition to a forbidden island, home to a research facility for the original "Jurassic Park". Some of the specialists include Johansson and "Bridgerton" actor Jonathan Bailey, who must obtain DNA samples from three dinosaurs to achieve a life-saving medical breakthrough. The Universal Pictures film arrives in theaters on July 2. For Rupert Friend, who also plays one of the specialists, this installment in the franchise is exhilarating. "I love adventure. I love being taken on a ride where you don't know what's going to happen. I love the unknown. I love risk," he said. For well-known science fiction director, Edwards, the pressure for the film to succeed did not hit until he arrived at the premiere. "It's all front and centre here. It feels a bit weird, to be honest. I can't quite get my head around it," the "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" director added.
