Benjamin Sesko causes disagreement as Man Utd icon refuses to accept Rasmus Hojlund fear
Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes are at odds over Manchester United 's decision to splash out on Benjamin Sesko. Scholes fears the club is repeating past mistakes made with Rasmus Hojlund, but Ferdinand feels differently.
The Slovenian international has officially put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Red Devils after RB Leipzig accepted a bid of £66.4million plus £7.6m in add-ons. With a total package worth £74m, United pipped Newcastle to the post for Sesko's signature after the Magpies launched their bid earlier in July.
Despite Newcastle offering the striker a more lucrative wage package than United, Ruben Amorim's project persuaded the 22-year-old to turn down the north east and the promise of Champions League football this season. However, United legend Scholes believes that Sesko may have made an error in choosing his former club. He fears the fans will scrutinise the young striker as they did previously with Hojlund.
During The Overlap Fan Debate last week, the ex-United midfielder expressed his belief that Newcastle would have been a better place for young Sesko to develop. Scholes said: "From the point of Sesko... he'll have more chance at Newcastle to develop which he needs. Now to be a Manchester United centre-forward, as we've found with Hojlund, a 22-year-old kid, you've got to be ready.
"It's got to be now. And Hojlund just isn't quite good enough for that as we've seen. But again, he's not had a chance to be developed – going to Newcastle might have been the best thing for him, for two or three years."
However, the former England international recognised the potential for future success at Old Trafford, but remained adamant in his belief that Sesko should have opted for Eddie Howe's side. He added: "Which club are going to be successful first? Are Man United going to win the league before Newcastle – if they ever do? Of course they are.
"That's why he wants to go there, but I'm saying, from a United point of view, is it the best bit of business? I still think you're in the same boat as having Hojlund."
Despite Scholes' reservations, another former United legend believes that Sesko arrives at the club with considerably more experience than Hojlund possessed in 2023. Ferdinand continued the debate on his YouTube channel, Rio Presents, protesting that Sesko will thrive in Manchester.
Ferdinand said: "Now we've got someone who's not as experienced but he's more experienced than Rasmus Hojlund. He's played probably almost double the amount of games as Hojlund when he came, he's two years older than what Rasmus Hojlund was when he signed.
"And he's shown that he can score goals. He hasn't gone and blitzed it and scored a ridiculous amount of goals, but he's a kid. He's young. Again, we can't expect that. I don't see him coming in and scoring 25 Premier League goals, or 20 Premier League goals.
"If he comes and scores between 10 and 15, I think that's an unbelievable return."
When quizzed on why he believes Sesko will fare better at United than Hojlund has managed, Ferdinand added: "Well, I think it's more hope at the moment. I think we've got to wait and see man. I think because you look at it and go, when Hojlund came and when Amorim came during the season, it's a new way of playing, a new style, a new environment.
"The manager was finding his feet and also you have a number nine finding his feet. So under Amorim, that's the way it's been for him [Rasmus]. So hopefully, there's a clearer picture, a clearer identity given the preseason that we've had.
"There's more goals, like I said, and players that understand the Premier League getting more experience up top, in the top end of the pitch. You'd like to think that counts for a lot going into the new season, to help a new number nine coming into the building."
Whilst the two United icons might disagree over Sesko's potential impact at Old Trafford, the most crucial viewpoint belongs to the striker himself – and he certainly believes in his ability to restore glory to the Theatre of Dreams.
In an interview with MUTV, the 22-year-old said: "For me, the team is great. It is getting better and better and that's why also there is just stuff that makes you come there, gives you this energy that you want to be part of. I think it's a great project, in general, and I can't wait to start, definitely.
"I've just been here for a couple of hours and it's already been amazing. I can already feel that we're going to be a great family and it is a pleasure to be part of it.
"It feels good, you know, the thing is it [the badge] fits well and I'm looking forward to just playing in it a lot and try to represent in the good ways possible."
With speculation surrounding his future at United, current number nine Hojlund previously insisted he will fight for his place in the squad.
During the recent pre-season tour in America, the Danish striker said: "I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. I'm still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I'm only 22. Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22.
"Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team."
Since then, however, it appears that Hojlund has warmed to the idea of a move to AC Milan. Only time will tell if he'll be giving Sesko a run for his money in the squad this season.

Luis Enrique makes honest admission about Tottenham after PSG win UEFA Super Cup
Luis Enrique admitted Tottenham 'deserved' to lift the UEFA Super Cup after his Paris Saint-Germain side fought back from two goals down to win on penalties. Spurs had appeared on course for a shock victory in Thomas Frank's first competitive match in charge as Micky van de Ven and newly appointed captain Cristian Romero netted either side of half time to stun the Champions League holders. But PSG enjoyed the lion's share of possession throughout the contest and the pressure eventually told, with Lee Kang-in arrowing an emphatic strike beyond Guglielmo Vicario in the 85th minute at Udinese's Stadio Friuli. The north Londoners were clinging on as the final whistle beckoned and Goncalo Ramos headed home Ousmane Dembele's pinpoint cross from the right flank to level in the fourth minute of stoppage time Vitinha missed PSG's opening effort as the match went straight to penalties, but an inspired Lucas Chevalier denied Van de Ven before Mathys Tel fired wide to put the Parisians on the cusp of a fifth trophy for 2025. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. It fell to Nuno Mendes to hold his nerve and the Portugal full-back did just that, making no mistake with the decisive spot-kick to send PSG's travelling support into raptures. The triumph capped off a historic few months for the French giants, who became European champions in May to add to their Ligue 1, French Cup and the Trophee des Champions crowns. Speaking shortly after the clash, a somewhat relieved Enrique asked TNT Sports' Jules Breach: 'Do you think we deserved that? For 80 minutes we didn't deserve that. 'I think Tottenham deserved winning the match because we can feel that they were in form, we can feel that they have been training for six weeks. 'They played a great match and we have been training only for six days, but sometimes football is unfair. 'And I have to say that we were very unlucky. In the last ten minutes, we could have scored two goals. 'I have to say that my players had faith until the last minute, like our supporters. 'Football is unpredictable and in that sense, I have to say that we were very lucky.' Enrique believes his players were likely feeling the effects of such a quick turnaround on the back of a gruelling campaign, with their Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea falling just a month earlier. 'Absolutely, from the first minute when the players touched the ball, when the players played without having the time to think about where you have to pass,' the Spaniard explained. 'Yeah, a lot of unprecise passes and it's difficult to play the way we want to play if you don't train, if you haven't got the time to train. 'I have to say that it was like a miracle.' Enrique singled out new signing Lucas Chevalier for special praise, applauding the former Lille goalkeeper's 'personality' both on and off the pitch. 'He's a big personality which is so important to have if you want to stay at a club like PSG, a lot of pressure around us,' he added. 'But I'm very happy for him because he shows that personality and also for the players who come from the bench because they are so important. 'All of them want to play in the starting line-up, but they did great to draw that match and win a penalty shootout.' Rangers working on three transfer exits as Jack Butland 'interest' sparks 49ers warning
Russell Martin is in the midst of revamping the Ibrox squad for both the Premiership and Champions League Rangers have been warned they must keep Jack Butland this summer amid an escalating clearout of the Ibrox dressing room. Russell Martin is still looking to put his own stamp on the Glasgow giants squad after a rocky start to the Scottish Premiership campaign. Despite two draws to start the season domestically, the boss has navigated a route to the Champions League playoff round after the new Ibrox owners 49ers Enterprises bringing in nine players for the boss so far this summer. Goalkeeper Butland has been the stand-out performer in the qualification rounds despite struggling to hold down a starting spot towards the end of last season. And with the club look to cut the size of the squad, Martin and the American owners have been warned against cashing in on the England cap by Richard Foster. He told the Go Radio Football Show: "He (Butland) is OK with the ball at his feet, I think Liam (Kelly) is probably better, obviously Liam is a bit smaller - but he starts the way he does and obviously he is going to get interest. "Goalkeeper is such a specialised position that everyone is on the lookout for them. It would be devastating for Rangers if they lost him. "For Rangers to replace him, I think it would take a decent amount of money. If you suddenly lose your goalkeeper, how much work have you done in looking at another goalkeeper?" Ridvan Yilmaz has dropped out of the Ibrox picture under Martin with Besiktas president Serdal Adali revealing that the club are in talks over bringing the 24-year-old back to the club. Yilmaz arrived at Ibrox in 2022 in a £5million deal but has failed to hold down a regular starting spot in the Scottish Premiership. Yeni Acik now report that Rangers have cut the valuation of the Turkish international from £5.1million to £2.5million in the last year after Besiktas enquired about a deal last summer. A new left-back could be on the agenda before the window closes with Palmeiras in negotiations to sign Jefte for as much as €6million (£5.1million). UOL claim that the the left-back has agreed a five-year deal with the Brazilian side with talks ongoing over a free to bring the 21-year-old back to his homeland. Jose Cifuentes is also reportedly in talks over another loan exit after a year on loan at Aris Saloniki. Brazilian outlet RTI Sport claim that talks over a five-month loan to Sport Club do Recife have "progressed' in the last 48 hours after an option to buy was placed in the agreement. Kyogo's first Birmingham goal has Celtic fans ‘jealous' – but 'embarrassing' moment sparks X-rated outburst from rival
FORMER Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi was in the thick of things as Birmingham dumped Sheffield United out of the Carabao Cup. In a frantic opening 15 minutes, the ex-Hoops favourite struck his first Blues goal before being involved in a contentions moment that sparked a FURIOUS reaction from an opponent. 7 Kyogo is off the mark as Birmingham player Credit: Getty 7 The Celtic hero was in the thick of the action Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 NINTCHDBPICT001016166294 Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 He was involved in an angry clash with Jack Robinson Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 The Sheffield United defender was furious Credit: X/ITV SPORT Kyogo, 30, was a firm favourite among the Celtic fans during his glittering four-year stint between 2021 and 2025. The Japan international bagged 85 goals in 165 games for the Parkhead club after moving to Glasgow from his homeland. Kyogo's goals inspired Celtic to nine major honours, including the treble in 2023. Many Hoops fans were gutted when the striker moved to France with Rennes in January in a bumper £10million deal. His time in Ligue 1 was an absolute nightmare, however, and was restricted to just six appearances in which he failed to score. After just six months, he moved on again last month, joining newly promoted Birmingham City in the English Championship. While he couldn't score in the opening day 1-1 draw with Ipswich at the weekend - albeit had a splendid strike disallowed - he didn't take long to open his account. Teammate Demarai Gray pounced on a horror defensive error just five minutes into last night's cup clash with Sheffield United, setting up the easiest of tap-ins for Kyogo who certainly wasn't going to pass up such a golden chance. The prolific frontman's first goal for the club set them on their way to a 2-1 win as they sealed progression in the League Cup. Seeing Kyogo scoring - and smiling again - had many Celtic fans feeling a hint of jealousy! Ex-Celtic star goes wild as he does the huddle at Oasis gig with 70,000 fans Birmingham posted: "Only two games in but you just know he's going to be a fan favourite." And several Celtic fans responded. One said: "Birmingham fans getting to experience him play for the first time is making me so jealous." Another added: "Absolute baller." A third posted: "Proud of him but heartbreaking also." While another said: "We lived it, and we loved it." Another post read: "I miss him already." Another Hoops fan added: "Good to see him enjoying his football again." Kyogo himself delivered a short message to the club's social media channels afterwards, saying: "I'm really happy to score my first goal, I will keep on running and helping the team by scoring many more goals. "Keep right on." As mentioned, Kyogo was very much in the thick of the action at St Andrew's in a busy opening period. He was involved in a tussle with Sheffield United captain Jack Robinson at the corner flag - and it was an incident that left the Blades defender absolutely irate. Robinson leaned on Kyogo's back, sending the striker off balance with the ball in play. It struck Kyogo's foot and Robinson saw the ball out for a throw-in. The two players' momentum took them to the advertising hoarding and Kyogo appeared to kick the ball away - whether it was deliberate or not, only he will know - and that did NOT impress Robinson. The 31-year old remonstrated with the assistant referee before Kyogo bumped into him. That left an already angry Robinson less than impressed, and the former Liverpool trainee put his hand on the striker, who then tumbled to the ground. And it's fair to say the defender felt Kyogo had gone down all too easily. The referee arrived on the scene, brandishing a yellow card to the defender who then unleashed an X-rated outburst towards the officials. He could be heard blasting: "He f****** kicked the ball away!" As the assistant referee then tries to calm Robinson down, he's met with a rather resounding "f*** off" from the Blades skipper. Many fans reacting to the club on social media felt Kyogo himself was perhaps fortunate not to see a yellow card for his part in the incident! One said: "Should have been a yellow for the dive and holding his face." An annoyed Sheffield United fan blasted: "Embarrassing from the Birmingham player really." Another said: "That's embarrassing." While another fumed: "Should have been a yellow for kicking the ball away then another for the horrific dive." Gustavo Hamer cancelled out Kyogo's strike in the second half before Jay Stansfield struck the Blues' winner three minutes from time. 7 Robinson is shown a yellow card Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 The decision left the Blades captain raging Credit: X/ITV SPORT Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd?
