When Life Gives You Tangerines' Extras Accuse Makers Of Mistreatment: "They Forced Us To..."

New Delhi:
One of Netflix's most popular K-dramas When Life Gives You Tangerines has recently found itself embroiled in a controversy. The prop team as well as some of the extras on set have complained about rude behaviour and ill-treatment.
One of the production members shared a tweet on X, stating how the props were damaged by the makers. When questioned about it, the prop team was met with unacceptable behaviour. Furthermore, an extra also tweeted about how they were treated as slaves and forced to shave their heads. The reason behind such misbehaviour was that the series team did not want to spend any additional money on the well-being of any other cast members, except the lead actors.
What
When Life Gives You Tangerines makers have been called out for their harsh behaviour towards the prop team and extras on set.
A X account shared an instance experienced by the Prop team, "Let me tell you something interesting. Our company staff were stationed on the set to "facilitate" the use of the props (we really were just there to keep an eye on them) because the production team had zero skills to operate the retro buses or large props that we rented or made for them, and they damaged them all. They were either ignorant or irresponsible. Of course, we took photos of it all and made claims later."

Furthermore, the prop team member alleged, "I still remember it. They were caught trying to use lacquer from ironwork stores to stencil the bus, and the person who did it said that "can't you just use lacquer thinner to remove it?" He was really unrepentant about it that he ended up being cursed out so much. The ignorant brat who thought that lacquer thinner is a magic potion that could cleanly erase just only the lacquer spray went around the set acting a fool."
As soon as the tweets went viral, other members of the crew such as the extras also spoke up.
The extras voiced their concerns for the mistreatment they had to deal with, "There's a detested, yet famous schedule amongst the extras for WLGYT too... They forced extras to shave their heads, and despite being a Netflix production, nothing was provided. They didn't want to spend money on anyone else appearing on the show but the main actors. They even neglected the elderly extras in the cold winter and made people starve without providing a food truck or craft table, throwing us to a random restaurant and telling us to eat within 30 minutes."
The extras added that they were deprived of basic amenities. To add to it, they weren't provided with insulating innerwear in the dead of winter, because the makers said it would ruin the fit of the costumes. They concluded by saying that "they were treated like slaves."
Response Of The Production Team
No formal response has been issued from the production team of When Life Gives You Tangerines, yet. As the tweets continue to go viral, viewers are probing Netflix and the show's producers for further investigation.
The Plot
When Life Gives You Tangerines is a slice-of-life K-drama series which is directed by Kim Won-Seok and led by IU, Park Bo-gum, Moon So-ri, and Park Hae-joon.
The storyline revolves around a poor girl named Ae-sun who wants to become a poet. It is also a beautiful love story between Ae-sun and a young boy named Gwan-si, which spans over five decades in South Korea.
Set against the backdrop of Jeju island, the plot explores the relationship of the lead pair as they combat several personal and historical challenges such as political unrest and changing family dynamics.
It is a testament to the power of everlasting love and the importance of family and community through changing times.
In A Nutshell
The viral tweets from the prop team and the extras from the When Life Gives You Tangerines sets, have veered the focus on the makers of the show. The production team has been accused of misbehaviour and harsh treatment while filming, which include being deprived of basic necessities like warm clothing, food trucks, craft tables, or any sign of comfort. An official statement from the producers is awaited.

Milwaukee man watched creepy Netflix episode on first date, then killed teen the same way

A Wisconsin man was found guilty on Saturday of killing and dismembering the body of a 19-year-old student on their first date after the two watched a Netflix documentary with an eerily similar theme. 34-year-old Maxwell Anderson killed Sade Carleena Robinson, a criminal justice student, in April 2024 murder after the two met for dinner. They went out to a restaurant and bar before Anderson invited her back to his Milwaukee home. This was the last time she was seen alive. The next day, she did not show up to work at a local pizzeria and was reported missing. The police checked her home and found no trace of her. Police found a leg that matched her DNA, along with other body parts like a foot and human flesh scattered throughout the city. Prosecutors showed bloodied photos recovered from Anderson's phone to prove he was the killer. The images, initially deleted by Anderson, showed him holding one of Robinson's chopped-off breasts. Describing it as 'his trophy', juror Melissa Blascoe told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the pictures will be in her mind "for quite some time.' The jury was also told that Anderson turned on a Netflix animated series named 'Love, Death & Robots" the night he brought Robinson home. One of the episodes in the series showed a dismembered corpse, which was discovered on the beach. Police also discovered a 'sex dungeon' in Anderson's home with "a sex sling, restraints and handcuffs." The photos found on the phone physically affected people in the courtroom, some of whom were shaking and crying, Blascoe added. Anderson is believed to have spent months planning the murder, even preparing a space lined with plastic sheeting. According to Associated Press, surveillance video shows Anderson driving Robinson's car to a county park near Lake Michigan. It is here that he cut her body into pieces, prosecutors argued, before setting her car on fire and taking a bus back to his apartment. The 15-member jury took 45 minutes to reach a guilty verdict. Anderson has been found guilty of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse and arson. No motive behind the killing has been revealed yet. Anderson faces a mandatory life sentence on August 15.

Rana Daggubati says Telugu cinema has 8-hour shift amid Deepika Padukone's exit from Spirit: ‘Some actors work 4 hours'

Deepika Padukone's reported exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit over the director refusing her 8-hour shift demand sparked a debate about work-life balance for actors in the industry. In an interview with Lallantop Cinema, Rana Daggubati weighed in on the matter, stating that it depends from industry to industry and person to person. (Also Read: Rana Daggubati opens up about nepotism in film industries, says 'ultimately you have to stand in front of camera, act') He spoke about how work-life balance is a topic of discussion in every industry, citing Narayana Murthy's comment about a 12-hour working shift. He also spoke about how the Telugu industry moved from Madras and revealed that filmmaking is not work for him, but a lifestyle. Talking about how work culture in cinema differs across industries, Rana said, 'It depends on the project, the person, and the region. For example, in Maharashtra, it's a 12-hour shift, while in Telugu cinema typically has an 8-hour shift starting at 7 am. Everyone has a certain mentality, and the city also gives to certain things. You are seeing it as a generic statement - it is not. If you have to shoot on a set, it depends on how much prep you need. There are films taking place on a big spectacle where only two shoots take place in a day." Rana also commented on the pressure actors face during long shoots, and said, 'Nobody is forcing anybody. It's a job. You can't be forced to do a job. Everyone has their own opinion on what's important to them in their life. There are actors who only work four hours a day - that's their system of working. They end up doing more than what a guy in 8 hours does. It's different for everybody, and it's not a general discussion." For the unversed, after Deepika's exit from Spirit, there were reports that Sandeep Reddy Vanga rejected some of her demands, including that of an 8-hour shift, a share in the film's profits, and not speaking her dialogues in Telugu. Deepika recently joined Atlee's Telugu film alongside Allu Arjun. Meanwhile, Rana is now gearing up for the release of the second season of his show Rana Naidu. The show also stars Venkatesh Daggubati along with Arjun Rampal, Surveen Chawla, Kriti Kharbanda, Sushant Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, and Dino Morea in key roles. The new season is set to premiere on June 13 on Netflix.

Rintaro and Kaoruko seem to have such a relationship. The gaze that innocently leaps over the walls they have erected against the outside world, like a child. I tried to put into words as straightforwardly as possible that that is what makes me so happy and so dear to me." Reira Ushio added, 'It was my first experience writing a song after reading the original story and I felt many different emotions. This story smelled like a small, pure white love.
