Where Mark Richt, Kirby Smart rank among the 2000s top college football coaches
The Athletic released their top 25 coaches of the 21st century and the Georgia Bulldogs had two of their three coaches from the 21st century earn spots on the list. Georgia coaches have garnered 258 wins since 2000, the fifth most wins of any team in the nation behind Oklahoma, Boise State, Alabama and Ohio State.
That's not to mention the amount of drafted players Georgia has had in the 21st century. Both of Georgia's highly-ranked coaches (Mark Richt and Kirby Smart) have ushered in eras of impressive growth and domination.
Where Georgia Bulldogs coaches rank in The Athletic's top 25:
Record: 145-51
Richt was hired by the Georgia Bulldogs after six stellar seasons as Florida State's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. He took a Georgia team struggling to meet expectations and while he never made a national championship with Georgia, he raised the expectations tremendously. In 2007, the Bulldogs finished as the No. 2 team in the country, and in 2012, they were only five yards and potentially one play away from winning the SEC and going to the national championship. It's a shame he only coached with Georgia for two years of the College Football Playoff era.
He also earned props for his time at Miami, coaching the Hurricanes to two top-20 finishes and the No. 2 ranking at one point in 2017.
"The only thing holding Richt's resume back was never winning the Big One," said Chris Vannini of the Athletic.
Accomplishments: Two SEC championships, eight top-10 finishes, four BCS/NY6 appearances, 18 bowl games
No. 4: Kirby Smart (2016-present)
Record: 109-19
It speaks to how good Kirby Smart is that the odds are in his favor to reach 100 wins in his tenure before reaching 20 losses. Kirby is the highest active coach on this list for good reason. In just eight years with Georgia, he transformed the team from perennial teases to championship contenders. He led Georgia to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022, which is an unbelievable feat considering the history of Georgia Bulldogs football and Georgia sports in general.
His biggest flaw as a coach was usually failing to win against his old team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and his old coach, Nick Saban. However, Smart got the best of Saban in the 2021 national championship, officially cementing him as one of the best coaches of not just the 21st century, but all time.
Smart is ranked behind just Pete Carroll (No. 3), Urban Meyer (No. 2) and Nick Saban (No. 1).

Thanks to Ginny & Georgia's abortion storyline, we finally have a powerful, real portrayal of what it's like

Netflix series Ginny and Georgia isn't exactly known for its gritty verisimilitude (the second season ends with a wedding, a police investigation and a shock confession), and with the show having returned for a third season, you can expect the melodrama to continue. But it's a tender and more understated moment towards to second half of the season that will resonate over the hyperbole, and will remain with viewers long after the series ends. For those not up to speed, Ginny meets Wolfe in her poetry class, and after some mild flirting, the pair end up having a brief liaison in the laundry room – leaving 16-year-old Ginny unexpectedly pregnant. It's a clear moment of contention for Ginny when she manages to speak to Georgia, after Wolfe's disappointing response to the news ('That's wild!' was his reaction, before fleeing). With Georgia having been a teenage mum herself, Ginny is painfully aware that if her mother had chosen to have an abortion, she wouldn't be here. This knowledge leads to uncertainty, even though Ginny knows having a baby isn't the right choice for her. Ginny ultimately decides to have the procedure, which is shown with quiet, raw accuracy – some pills, and Ginny returning to her home with a hot water bottle as she undergoes painful cramping. She gently asks her mother whether she should feel guilty, before asking her dad whether she is damaged. It is made clear that Ginny has not done anything wrong – that she did what she felt was right to her in a difficult situation. What makes this storyline so powerful is that it does not attempt to moralise or present any scenario as more correct than another – instead it is subdued in its approach, showing the reality for so many young girls who find themselves pregnant unexpectedly, and the difficulty of making that life-changing decision they are forced to reckon with. It's an accurate reflection of messiness because there is no right answer; for Georgia, having kids young was her saving grace. For Ginny, it might have inhibited a bright future – and the series makes it clear that it's vital she has the ability to make that choice for herself. The abortion storyline is particularly brave, considering it's an increasingly contentious topic in the States. Ginny & Georgia is set in Massachusetts, where abortion is still legal in certain circumstances - but this is not the case in many parts of America. Since the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022, and the second term of Donald Trump's presidency, a women's right to have autonomy over her own body is being increasingly challenged by right-wing politicians and Evangelical extremists. It's something that we're now starting to see echoes of in the UK too. Abortion may be legal here, but under particular caveats. Two doctors need to agree that it would cause less harm to the woman's physical or mental health, or the health of existing children, than continuing the pregnancy before 24 weeks. However, right wing figures such as Nigel Farage are increasingly gaining power in the UK; Farage himself has since suggested reducing the abortion limit to below 24 weeks should he be handed the keys to No.10 in the future. It may not necessarily have the bombast or excitement as other storylines in Ginny & Georgia, but the abortion scenes show the quiet yet urgent reality needed for women, no matter what the circumstances, to be able to make the choice over her own body – and future. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors We've had plenty of teasers, but on Thursday morning Hulu finally released the first full trailer for the upcoming sci-fi horror series "Alien: Earth". Read More: 'Wicked: For Good' is Coming in November: Watch the Official Trailer The official synopsis for "Alien: Earth" reads: "In the year 2120, the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this Corporate Era, cyborgs (humans with both biological and artificial parts) and synthetics (humanoid robots with artificial intelligence) exist alongside humans." "But the game is changed when the wunderkind Founder and CEO of Prodigy Corporation unlocks a new technological advancement: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness)." "The first hybrid prototype named 'Wendy' marks a new dawn in the race for immortality. After Weyland-Yutani's spaceship collides into Prodigy City, 'Wendy' and the other hybrids encounter mysterious life forms more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined." DISNEY We see what appears to be the birth of the hybrid Wendy early in the trailer, when a girl who appears to be terminally ill has her consciousness transferred into the body of an android. The trailer also gives us some brief but promising looks at the other aliens who will be a problem for the heroes in "Alien: Earth". Rather than just the xenomorph, we learn that the crashed ship was transporting four other alien species. We get what appear to be very quick glimpses at some of those other species in the trailer; including something that looks like a small, squid-like creature. "Alien: Earth" will premiere on Hulu on Tuesday, August 12 on Hulu and FX. The series debuts with a two episode premiere. Fans outside the US will be able to watch the episodes on Disney+. After the premiere, episodes will release one at a time weekly. Five programs that are punching above their weight in recruiting

© Jerome Miron-Imagn Images Commitment season is here and there will be massive changes to the 2026 team rankings over the next month and a half. Taking a look at the team rankings as they stand right now, there are programs near the top of the list that haven't been associated with elite recruiting classes in recent years. Advertisement Here are five programs that are currently punching above their weight in the team rankings. RECRUITING RUMOR MILL: Latest buzz on nearly three dozen prospects | June kicks off with a bang | Baltimore | Detroit NEW RIVALS250 RELEASED: Ranking | Top storylines | Ten prospects who could rise with a big June CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info ARIZONA STATE Marshall Levenson/ Advertisement RELATED: Arizona State 2026 commit list Head coach Kenny Dillingham has certainly "activated the valley" with this recruiting class, which currently sits at No. 15 in the team rankings. It's been more than 10 years since the Sun Devils have finished with a top-20 recruiting class and it's not out of the question to think Arizona State could reach that threshold this year. Just one season after its unlikely run to the College Football Playoff, Arizona State currently holds commitments from three four-star prospects, which is more than in any Arizona State class since the 2021 recruiting cycle. The Sun Devils may not be known as a recruiting power but the arrow is certainly pointing up. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH ARIZONA STATE FANS AT ILLINOIS Nick Lucero/ RELATED: Illinois 2026 commit list Head coach Bret Bielema has been making waves in the media this offseason but don't let that distract you from the success the Illini have been experiencing on the recruiting trail. Illinois currently has a top-10 recruiting class, something the program has never had at the end of a recruiting cycle. In fact, Illinois' highest-ranked recruiting class was in 2007 when it finished at No. 20 in the team rankings. With five four-star prospects onboard, Illinois is set up to finish with one of the best recruiting classes in program history. If they crash the College Football Playoff this season, who knows how high the Illini could finish. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH ILLINOIS FANS AT LOUISVILLE Nick Lucero/ RELATED: Louisville 2026 commit list The Cardinals were fully engaged with recruiting the transfer portal earlier than the majority of college football teams and have been aggressive there over the last few years, signing just 15 or 16 high school prospects in each of the last four years. In this cycle though, head coach Jeff Brohm and company already have 17 commitments and find themselves just outside the top 10 and the team rankings. With two Rivals250 commitments and an additional four-star commitment, the Cardinals are in position for their highest-ranked recruiting class since the 2023 cycle. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH LOUISVILLE FANS AT RUTGERS RELATED: Rutgers 2026 commit list Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano have had highly ranked recruiting classes early in the recruiting process in previous years only to see teams surpass them by the time National Signing Day rolls around. Still, the Scarlet Knights have put together a strong recruiting class with five four-star prospects and currently sit inside the top 10 of the team rankings. Rutgers has never finished with a top-25 recruiting class, but there is still time for the Scarlet Knights to pick up momentum with key prospects and reel them in before the end of the recruiting cycle. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH RUTGERS FANS AT USC RELATED: USC 2026 commit list The Trojans are a far cry from the Pete Carroll years when they were consistently signing top-five recruiting classes, but head coach Lincoln Riley and general manager Chad Bowden have seemingly reversed that trend. USC currently sits at No. 1 in the team rankings with a total of 27 commitments, including two five-stars and three other top-100 prospects. The Trojans will need to continue to add elite prospects to this class if they hope to hold onto that top spot, but they've already positioned themselves to finish well inside the top 10. In the last seven recruiting classes, USC has finished in the top-10 just twice. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH USC FANS AT
