John Abraham's 'Tehran' director Arun Gopal: 'Understood the covert operations involving India, Iran, and Israel
John Abraham's film Tehran has been awaiting its release since 2023. It finally releases on Zee5 during the Independence Day weekend. And in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, the actor broke his silence on the same.
John revealed, 'It's very disheartening. I'm not going to mince my words on it, but it breaks your heart, especially for an actor who always wants to be seen on the big screen. But we all made a very informed decision on that. And the decision was that because of the conflicts and controversies that are happening around internationally.'

And the director of the film Arun Gopal has spilled the beans on the idea of the film and said, 'What initially drew me in was the sheer intrigue of an espionage'ish thriller set against a backdrop we rarely get to explore cinematically - the geopolitical landscape of the Iran-Israel conflict. But when I started my research I soon realised that 'geopolitics' was just the texture - the real deal was a deeper curiosity: how personal loyalty and political ideologies collide in the shadows'
Gopal added, 'Characters who operate in moral grey zones will always be fascinating - people who are both perpetrators and victims of geopolitics. Once I started spending more time with real officials and agents, I understood real-world events and covert operations involving India, Iran, and Israel. That's when the story started to take shape. It wasn't just about action or politics anymore - it became about identity, choices, and the cost of duty.'
On political thrillers and the sensitivity of the material
It's tightrope over a minefield - especially when the lines between fact and fiction start to blur. Did we as makers, second-guess certain choices? Yes we did. Not because they weren't dramatic or compelling, but because the subject matter touched on real tensions, real countries, and real people. You want to tell a gripping story, but you also don't want to misrepresent or sensationalise just for the sake of impact.
One scene in particular - without giving too much away - raised internal debates. It dealt with a decision I took on set, involving the antagonist's vice and I kept circling back to whether it was too provocative, too loaded, or simply too risky. In the end - we kept it, but only after we ensured it was rooted in character truth, not just political noise. That's the challenge with this genre: staying honest to your story while respecting the gravity of the world you're portraying.

Meat ban row: Independence Day is for unity, not politics, says BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma
Bhopal: Even though the Madhya Pradesh government has not issued any notification on banning meat sales during the upcoming Independence Day and Krishna Janmashtami celebrations, several civic bodies across the country have ordered such restrictions -- a move welcomed by ruling BJP leaders. BJP MLA from Bhopal's Huzur constituency, Rameshwar Sharma, said decisions by civic bodies in places such as Hyderabad and Kalyan in Maharashtra should be appreciated rather than turned into a political controversy. 'August 15 is a day to showcase India's unity, not to indulge in politics. What is wrong if meat sales are suspended for two or three days?' Sharma told IANS on Wednesday. Reacting to AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi's criticism -- in which he called the ban 'callous and unconstitutional' -- Sharma accused him of trying to stir unrest. 'Owaisi is among those leaders who mislead the Muslim community for political gain. Besides being a politician, he is also a senior advocate. He should understand the significance of Independence Day,' Sharma said. The meat ban orders have triggered a political storm, with leaders from across the spectrum calling it an infringement on personal food choices at a time when the nation is celebrating its freedom. In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has directed that slaughterhouses and meat shops remain closed on August 15 and 16 -- Independence Day and Janmashtami. A similar order in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar drew objections from Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. 'It is wrong to impose such a ban. In big cities, people from different communities live together. If it's an emotional issue, people may accept a one-day ban. But enforcing it on days like Maharashtra Day, Independence Day, and Republic Day is unreasonable,' Pawar said. The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation in Thane has also issued a closure order. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray hit out at the move, saying the municipal commissioner should be suspended. 'What we eat on Independence Day is our right and our freedom. They cannot dictate our meals. In our home, even during Navratri, our prasad includes prawns and fish because that is our tradition -- this is our Hindutva. Why enter people's homes? The corporation should focus on fixing potholes,' Thackeray said.

After spending Rs 136 crore on residents' proposals last year, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation invites budget suggestions again
On Independence Day, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will launch its 'participatory budget' initiative for 2026-27, wherein it will invite residents to once again decide how 10 per cent of the property tax collections should be invested in their neighbourhood. Last year, several residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad saw their suggestions and ideas turn into reality. 'From funding for new roads in Punawale and upgraded footpaths in Charholi to new infrastructure works in Ravet, Pimpri Chinchwad's residents saw their ideas turn into reality under last year's Participatory Budget,' the civic administration said in a press release issued on Wednesday. In the 2025–26 cycle, the PCMC received 2,279 citizen proposals from its eight zones. After detailed technical scrutiny, 786 were accepted and 499 were funded. The final allocation of Rs 136.98 crore for these proposals exceeded the earmarked Rs 94.86 crore, much beyond the reserve when public priorities were clear, officials said. Building on this success, the PCMC will launch the 2026–27 edition of the initiative on August 15, inviting residents to once again decide how 10 per cent of property tax collections should be invested in their neighbourhoods, officials said. Zone D, covering Punawale, Tathawade, Wakad, and Pimple Saudagar, emerged as the largest beneficiary, with Rs 43.88-crore funding allocated for major road works, stormwater upgrades, and parks. Zone B, including Ravet and Kiwale, saw funding worth Rs 20.60 crore, ranging from new road networks to a new municipal school in Ravet. Projects reflected the top demands across the city: roadworks, footpaths, park improvements, waste management, and stormwater drainage. Distinctive local priorities also emerged, such as CCTV installation for public safety in Zones A and F, urban street design-compliant footpaths in Thergaon, and railway overpass development in Pimpri Gaon. Shekhar Singh, Municipal Commissioner, PCMC, said in the statement, 'The participatory budget shows how governance works best when it is inclusive. Last year's projects are living proof that citizen input leads to results residents value most. This is more than infrastructure—it's about building trust and shared ownership in the city's progress.' Praveen Jain, Chief Accounts and Finance Officer-cum-Director, PCMC, said, 'Every rupee in the participatory budget is a reflection of the community's priorities. The process ensures transparency, accountability, and the satisfaction of knowing public funds are working where they are most needed, as identified by the people themselves.'
