Rahul Gandhi asks Congress workers to emulate model set by former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy
Inaugurating a public meeting held as part of the second death anniversary of Oommen Chandy at Puthuppally in Kottayam district of Kerala on Friday (July 18, 2025), Mr. Gandhi expressed his aspiration to cultivate more leaders such as the former Chief Minister and told the leaders to 'touch the feelings of the people to become a leader.'
'If you do not feel for the people or are not able to connect with them or hug them, you may not be a leader. The real tragedy in Indian politics is that very few people care for others, listen to them or touch them. Oommen Chandy was one of the masters of political feeling I have come across in my political life,' he said.
He also recounted that Oommen Chandy faced 'brutal and unfair political attacks' during his life. 'He endured criminal assaults and non-stop lies were spread against him. Yet, I have never heard him respond with anger. Oommen Chandy is indeed a special person in Kerala politics,' he said.
Mr. Gandhi also described Oommen Chandy as a master for him and many other politicians in Kerala. 'In many ways, Oommen Chandy has been a guru for me and many people in Kerala. He showed us the direction, not through mere words or theories, but through his actions. I look forward to many young people in Kerala following in his footsteps and embracing the tradition of politics of Kerala,' he said.
He also highlighted Oommen Chandy's initiative, Sruthi Tharangam project, which was launched 'not for electoral gain, but to ensure that every single child in Kerala should be able to hear.'
Earlier in the day, Mr. Gandhi paid his respects at Oommen Chandy's tomb at St. George Orthodox Church at Puthuppally by offering floral tributes and lit a candle.
Later, he also handed over the keys of 12 houses built by the Oommen Chandy foundation to the beneficiaries and also launched the KPCC's charitable initiative in memory of Oommen Chandy, titled Smrithi Tharangam.
UDF leaders, heads of various religious and community organisations, including AICC general secretaries K.C. Venugopal, Deepa Das Munshi, KPCC president Sunny Joseph, Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, supreme head of Orthodox Church, and others were among those present at the event.

Will Withdraw Petition from Supreme Court and Begin Mahadayi Work Soon: DCM DK Shivakumar
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar has hit back strongly at Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant's remarks over the Mahadayi project, saying Karnataka will soon withdraw its petition from the Supreme Court and begin work on the project without delay. Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha on Thursday, Shivakumar condemned the Goa CM's statement that the Centre would never permit the Mahadayi project. 'We will withdraw our petition and start the work immediately. Let him try to stop us—I'm ready to face it,' said Shivakumar. He accused Goa CM Pramod Sawant of having 'lost his mental balance' and lacking respect for the federal structure of the country. 'The Mahadayi tribunal has already delivered its verdict, and tenders have been floated. During the BJP government, former CM Basavaraj Bommai, local MPs, and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi themselves celebrated the green light for the project,' he added. All Karnataka MPs Must Unite to Defend State's Pride Shivakumar emphasized that all 28 Lok Sabha MPs and 12 Rajya Sabha MPs from Karnataka must come together to protect the dignity and rights of the state. 'I will personally meet with all our MPs. This is about our pride. The silence of our MPs on this issue is unacceptable. We cannot let Karnataka's interests be compromised for the sake of just one MP from Goa.' He said he would seek appointments with the Union Minister for Jal Shakti and the Prime Minister, and would lead a delegation of all Karnataka MPs to present the state's stance. 'Whether others come or not, I will do my job. But I am confident many will join us,' he said. When asked if he plans to convene an all-party meeting, Shivakumar confirmed that he would be calling a meeting of all party MPs on the issue. Responding to whether Union Ministers are misleading the public on the Mahadayi issue, Shivakumar said, 'The Union Jal Shakti Minister has been non-partisan. I've met him several times, and even the Union Environment Minister has extended support for developmental work. The problem lies entirely with Goa.' Rahul Gandhi's Allegations Are True: Irregularities in Bengaluru Rural Voting When questioned about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's recent claim that vote manipulation occurred in Karnataka during the Lok Sabha elections, Shivakumar agreed. 'I support Rahul Gandhi's statement. I have personally investigated irregularities in the Bengaluru Rural constituency. Many malpractices have occurred. I won't speak much on it now, but I will address it in detail later,' he said.

100% proof of ECI allowing cheating, will not allow poll body to get away with it: Rahul Gandhi
The Congress has "concrete 100% proof" that the Election Commission allowed cheating in a constituency in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday (July 24, 2025) and warned the poll panel that it will not get away with this "because we are going to come for you". Mr. Gandhi alleged that the Election Commission is not functioning as the Election Commission of India, and is "not doing its job". Asked about the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's reported remarks that the option of boycotting Bihar Assembly polls was open, Mr. Gandhi told reporters that his party has "concrete 100 per cent proof" of the Election Commission allowing cheating in a seat in Karnataka. "Not 90%, when we decide to show it to you, it is a 100% proof," the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. "We just looked at one constituency and we found this. I am absolutely convinced that constituency after constituency this is the drama that is taking place. Thousands and thousands of new voters, how old are they? -- 45, 50, 60, 65, thousands and thousands of them in one constituency. This is one thing, voter deletion, voter addition, new voters who are way above 18 (is going on)... so we have caught them," he said. "I want to send a message to the Election Commission — if you thing you are going to get away with this, if your officers think they are going to get away with this, you are mistaken, you are not going to get away with this because we are going to come for you," Mr. Gandhi told reporters in Parliament House premises. The Congress leader on Wednesday alleged that elections are being "stolen" in India and claimed that his party has figured out the modus operandi of the "votes theft" by studying a Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka. Gandhi said he would put before the people and the Election Commission in black in white on how the "theft of votes" is being done. His remarks came after it emerged that during house-to-house visit in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral roll in Bihar, poll officials have so far found that more than 52 lakh voters were not present at their addresses. The opposition has been protesting in both houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging that the EC's exercise was aimed at disenfranchising voters in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections.

'Factories in China, workers in India and profits in Ireland': Trump slams Silicon Valley's 'radical globalism'
Addressing an AI Summit in Washington on Wednesday, Trump slammed the 'global radicalism' of Silicon Valley, accusing major tech companies of exploiting American freedoms and outsourcing workers from elsewhere read more US President Donald Trump has expressed discontent over US tech companies hiring Indian workers and building factories in China, saying that under his presidency, 'those days are over'. Addressing an AI Summit in Washington on Wednesday, Trump slammed the 'global radicalism' of Silicon Valley, accusing major tech companies of exploiting American freedoms and outsourcing workers from elsewhere. He said, 'Many of our largest tech companies have reaped the blessings of American freedom while building their factories in China, hiring workers in India, and slashing profits in Ireland. We need US technology companies to be all-in for America.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD This is not the first time Trump has targeted US tech companies for hiring workers from abroad. Earlier this year, the president criticised Apple for manufacturing and assembling iPhones in India. He threatened CEO Tim Cook with 25 per cent tariffs on Apple products if the company does not stop manufacturing outside of the US. Trump's new 'AI Action Plan' At the event, the president unveiled a sweeping new plan for America's 'global dominance' in artificial intelligence, proposing to cut back environmental regulations to speed up the construction of AI supercomputers while promoting the sale of US-made AI technologies at home and abroad. The 'AI Action Plan' embraces many of the ideas voiced by tech industry lobbyists and the Silicon Valley investors who backed Trump's election campaign last year. The plan includes some familiar tech lobby pitches. That includes accelerating the sale of AI technology abroad and making it easier to construct the energy-hungry data center buildings that are needed to form and run AI products. It also includes some AI culture war preoccupations of the circle of venture capitalists who endorsed Trump last year. The plan prioritises AI innovation and adoption, urging the removal of any barriers that could slow down adoption across industries and government. The nation's policy, Trump said, will be to do 'whatever it takes to lead the world in artificial intelligence.' With inputs from agencies
