
Gen Z's Underground Social Network Just Went National and It's Blowing Up
While most social platforms are trying to become the next TikTok, one startup is building something very different.
Fizz is a pseudonymous, hyperlocal app born on college campuses. Until recently, it was known as a kind of private campus message board; part Reddit, part group chat, but with the intimacy of a dorm hallway. No followers, no influencers, no pressure to perform. Just students talking to each other, anonymously or under pseudonyms, about the stuff that actually makes up daily life: dining hall food, econ finals, party rumors, roommate drama.
But five months ago, Fizz started quietly testing something new: a cross-campus product that connects students not just within their university, but across the country. The new feed layers shared identity, interests, geography and more, all while maintaining the local anonymity that made Fizz thrive in the first place.
Now, the results are in. Fizz's daily active users in the new product cohort have jumped 50% in three weeks. Content creation has nearly doubled. Engagement time has soared. And the app has grown by more than 50 campuses in just the last month—with zero marketing spend.
Teddy Solomon, 23, co-founded Fizz during the pandemic after dropping out of Stanford. The app, originally conceived as a hyperlocal space for students to speak freely, grew virally thanks to a flyer campaign and a thousand donuts hand-delivered to campuses.
But from day one, Solomon had a bigger vision. 'We always knew that once we became the dominant college app, we could offer something bigger,' he says. 'A global experience built around the same values: shared context, identity, experience—but across schools.'
The new version of Fizz, which rolled out to a quarter of its campuses this year, is exactly that. It uses a new personalized feed, powered by a recommendation engine, to surface content not just from a student's university, but from adjacent communities they naturally overlap with.
'If you're a Stanford student from New York, why shouldn't you see what's happening at Columbia or NYU?' Solomon says. 'If you're at Dartmouth, you probably have a lot in common with someone at Princeton. Or if you're at UT Austin, you might care what's going on at Texas A&M.'
Fizz didn't publicize the new feed at launch. They wanted to know: would people actually use it? Would it be sticky? Would it still feel authentic? Now, five months in, they have their answer.
'We've nearly doubled the content creation rate within the cross-campus cohort,' Solomon tells me. 'Engagement time has gone way up. And our daily user base has grown 1.5x just in the last few weeks.'
The app is also now adding 50 campuses a month, without paid acquisition, brand deals, or growth hacking. 'We don't spend a dollar,' he says. 'No influencers, no ambassadors. Just word of mouth.'
Fizz's expansion is fast. The cross-campus product is turning once-siloed communities into a national Gen Z social layer that still feels personal, still feels small.
Fizz's rise says as much about what it isn't as what it is. 'We're not TikTok,' Solomon says bluntly. 'We're not entertainment. We're not about performative content. We're about what's happening now, in your world, with people who get you.'
It's a key distinction. While Instagram and TikTok chase global virality, Fizz leans hard into hyper relevance: the inside joke, the anonymous confession, the econ final everyone just bombed.
On most platforms, only 1% of users post. On Fizz, 30% of weekly active users create content.
'The person who never leaves their room has the same voice as the frat star,' Solomon says. 'That's what makes Fizz different. You don't need to be perfect. You don't even need to be visible.'
The momentum isn't stopping at campuses. 'In the next week, we're expanding beyond college,' Solomon says. 'We've built something that works for Gen Z more broadly—whether they went to college or not.'
That move is significant. Most Gen Z social platforms don't make it past the campus stage. But Fizz is already seeing demand from users who dropped out, opted out, or never enrolled in the first place.
'When I visit campuses with 10% graduation rates, I know 90% of those students won't still be there in three years,' Solomon says. 'But they still deserve a community. They still deserve a voice.' Fizz is about to give them one.
With over $40 million raised, Fizz is quickly becoming one of the most important social startups in years. And it's doing it without the things we've come to associate with 'success' in the creator economy: no massive influencers, no addictive videos, no virality-first algorithms.
'We're building social media the way it was supposed to be,' Solomon says. 'Real connections. Real people. Real time.'

Sober karaoke on the rise as Gen Z ditch booze
Young people who shun alcohol are driving a boom in 'sober karaoke', putting them at odds with older generations who typically only sing after a few drinks. Charlie Elek, chief executive of Britain's biggest chain of karaoke bars Lucky Voice, said he had seen an increase Gen Z eschewing booze during their singing sessions – breaking with the popular image of karaoke as a late night activity only undertaken when the pubs have shut. He said 8pm was now the most popular time for bookings, compared to 10pm 'back in the day', because of a shift in drinking culture. 'Back in the day we were very much about post-pub activity. People would feel the need to have five drinks before coming to Lucky Voice. With Gen Z not not drinking the same ways that we used to, that that has changed over time,' he said. He said that older people were still drinking more ahead of karaoke sessions. 'There's definitely some people who feel – it's an older generation – that, 'well, I'm not going to do karaoke until I have about five pints'. 'There's something kind of more guarded about the older generations.' It comes amid a broader shift away from traditional pubs in terms of where younger people socialise. While Britain's pub industry has suffered many closures in recent years, so-called 'competitive socialising' venues offering activities like karaoke, axe throwing and shuffleboard have become more popular. Younger people in particular are cutting down on alcohol – with many now going completely teetotal. In a survey by Kantar last year, 59pc of Gen Z – which are defined as people born in or after 1997 – claimed not to have drunk any alcohol in the last 12 months. Mr Elek said this meant the chain was having to cater to a 'different type of customer'. 'They do come earlier,' he said. 'We have had to work a lot on our low & no [alcohol] menu, and that's getting really big pick up.' Founded in 2005 by Martha Lane Fox, the Baroness of Soho and her business partners Julian Douglas and Nick Thistleton, Lucky Voice is Britain's biggest chain dedicated exclusively to karaoke. It runs five bars in London and one in Brighton. As drinking habits have changed, the chain has also begun taking more corporate bookings and hosting more parties for children. The business pulled in its best Christmas on record in 2024, with sales rising 17pc compared with the prior year. However, as well as seeing a rise in sober karaoke, Mr Elek said he had noticed some customers staying out later on Sundays and week nights because they are working from home and do not have to go into the office the next day. He said: 'There's just a slight different attitude from the days where everyone was working five days a week and you knew that you were going to be at desk at 8:30am.' AI Forces Leaders To Rediscover The Missing Humanistic Component
In boardrooms across the world, a familiar scene unfolds daily: executives hunched over spreadsheets, dissecting metrics, optimizing processes, and chasing the next quarter's numbers. It's a dance of efficiency we've perfected over decades, one that has undoubtedly driven remarkable progress. Yet beneath this symphony of optimization lies a quieter truth: we've been playing only half the song. The other half, the humanistic component that transforms good organizations into great ones and sustainable success into legacy, has been relegated to the background, often dismissed as too soft, too unmeasurable, or too idealistic for serious business consideration. But as artificial intelligence reshapes our landscape rapidly, we're being handed an unexpected gift: the opportunity to finally address this imbalance and conduct the full orchestra of human potential. Our modern obsession with quantifiable outputs has created an optimization trap. According to Stanford's 2024 AI Index Report, AI capabilities continue to advance rapidly across multiple benchmarks, yet many leaders remain focused primarily on efficiency gains and cost reductions. This narrow focus has led us to optimize for what we can measure while neglecting the underlying melody that makes organizations truly thrive, the human elements of trust, creativity, empathy, and meaning-making. The obsession with key performance indicators has led to a counterproductive switch from 'measure what you treasure' to 'treasure what you measure'. Consider the difference between a technically proficient musician and a master performer. Both can play the notes correctly, but only the master understands that music lives in the spaces between the notes, in the emotional resonance that transforms sound into experience. Similarly, great leadership isn't just about hitting performance targets; it's about creating conditions where people feel valued, inspired, and connected to something larger than themselves. Organizations that have thrived over decades understand this intuitively. They recognized that while systems and processes provide the framework, it's the humanistic elements that provide the soul. These elements, emotional intelligence, moral courage, authentic communication, and genuine care for stakeholder wellbeing, create the conditions for innovation, resilience, and sustainable growth. It is a win-win-win-win – for the humans we are, the institutions we belong to, the country we are part of and the planet we depend on. The current AI revolution, rather than threatening our humanity, is offering us an opportunity to confront what it truly means to be human and humane. As machines become increasingly capable of handling routine cognitive tasks, we're forced to grapple with fundamental questions: What uniquely human capabilities should we cultivate? How do we create value that transcends mere efficiency? What does authentic leadership look like in an age of artificial intelligence? Hybrid intelligence combines the best of AI and humans, leading to more sustainable, creative, and trustworthy results." This isn't about humans versus machines, but about recognizing that our greatest potential lies in thoughtful collaboration, what we might call the complementarity of natural and artificial intelligence. The key insight here is that AI's growing capabilities don't diminish human value; they amplify our need to focus on what makes us irreplaceably human. While AI excels at pattern recognition, data processing, and optimization, humans bring contextual understanding, ethical reasoning, creative synthesis, and the ability to navigate ambiguity with wisdom and compassion. This realization opens the door to prosocial AI, systems that are intentionally designed, trained, tested, and targeted to bring out the best in people and organizations while serving the broader good of society and planet. Rather than simply automating existing processes, prosocial AI amplifies human potential and creates conditions for collective flourishing. AI systems can be designed to promote positive social outcomes rather than simply maximizing engagement or profit. But these positive outcomes will not happen as an automatic derivative of ever more sophisticated technology. Ultimately the technology of tomorrow will be as good or ugly as the humans of today. Garbage in, garbage out or Values in, values out. We have a choice, but we need to make it. The vision of prosocial AI aligns with a deeper aspiration: creating a world where everyone has a fair chance to fulfill their inherent potential to flourish. This isn't utopian thinking; it's practical wisdom. Organizations that prioritize human flourishing alongside performance metrics consistently outperform those focused solely on short-term gains. Making this happen requires humanistic leadership. Designing the future requires a more nuanced vision of life and living. Beyond discussions of AI and the future of work, it is time to envision HI and the future of life itself. The future belongs not to humans who excel with artificial intelligence alone, nor to purely human-driven approaches. The catalysts of positive social change will be those who master hybrid intelligence—HI—the dynamic interplay between natural intelligence – NI – and artificial intelligence – AI. It is time to move beyond either-or equations. Think of it like learning to dance with a partner who has completely different rhythms and strengths. The magic doesn't happen when one leads and the other follows, but when both contribute their unique gifts to create something neither could achieve alone. Human intelligence carries the weight of millennia — our capacity for moral reasoning shaped by countless generations, our ability to read between the lines of what isn't said, our gift for creative leaps that defy logical progression. We carry the wisdom of bodies that have felt joy and heartbreak, minds that dream in metaphors, and spirits that yearn for meaning beyond mere efficiency. Artificial intelligence, meanwhile, brings a different kind of power: the ability to hold thousands of variables in perfect balance, to spot patterns across vast landscapes of information, to maintain unwavering consistency in analysis. Where we bring depth, AI brings breadth. Where we offer intuition, AI provides systematic thoroughness. What the research doesn't capture: the qualitative shift that happens when organizations stop asking "How can AI do this job?" and start asking "How can AI help humans do this job better?" And maybe even, "how can AI support humans to be better?" The difference isn't semantic — it's foundational. Effective hybrid intelligence emerges not from clever technical integration, but from a fundamental commitment to amplifying what makes us most human while leveraging what makes AI most useful. This means designing systems that create more interesting work, not less. More meaningful connections, not fewer. More opportunities for human creativity and judgment, not replacement of them. To develop the kind of Hybrid Intelligence that serves both performance and humanity, leaders need a practical framework. The A-Frame approach builds on four foundational elements: Awareness: Developing deep understanding of both human and artificial intelligence capabilities and limitations. This means cultivating double literacy to encompass human literacy (a holistic understanding of self, others, and social systems) combined with algorithmic literacy (understanding what AI is, how it works, and where it falls short). Appreciation: Recognizing and valuing the unique contributions that both humans and AI bring to complex challenges. This involves moving beyond the binary thinking that sees AI as either savior or threat, instead appreciating the complementary nature of human and artificial capabilities. Acceptance: Acknowledging the current realities and limitations of both human and artificial intelligence without falling into either technophobia or techno-utopianism. This includes accepting that neither humans nor AI are perfect, and that their combination requires ongoing attention and refinement. Accountability: Taking responsibility for the outcomes of NI-AI collaboration, ensuring that the integration serves ethical purposes and contributes to human flourishing. This means establishing clear governance structures, feedback mechanisms, and guidelines for prosocial AI deployment. The A-Frame approach rests on developing double literacy, a combination of human literacy and algorithmic literacy that enables leaders to navigate the hybrid intelligence landscape effectively. Human literacy involves deep self-awareness, emotional intelligence, understanding of social dynamics, and appreciation for the full spectrum of human experience. It means recognizing that humans are not merely rational actors but complex beings driven by emotions, values, relationships, and meaning-making. Leaders with strong human literacy understand how to create psychological safety, foster authentic relationships, and inspire others toward shared purposes. Algorithmic literacy, meanwhile, involves understanding AI's capabilities, limitations, and appropriate applications. This doesn't require becoming a technical expert, but it does mean understanding how AI systems learn, what kinds of biases they might embed, and where human judgment remains essential. Leaders with strong algorithmic literacy can make informed decisions about when and how to deploy AI tools while maintaining appropriate oversight and accountability. Together, these literacies enable leaders to orchestrate human-AI collaboration that amplifies the best of both worlds while mitigating risks and unintended consequences. Developing hybrid intelligence isn't an abstract concept, it requires concrete action. Organizations can begin by conducting honest audits of their current approach to AI integration, asking not just whether AI is improving efficiency, but whether it's enhancing human capabilities and contributing to meaningful outcomes. This might involve redesigning workflows to leverage AI's analytical strengths while preserving spaces for human creativity and relationship-building. It could mean establishing cross-functional teams that include both technical specialists and humanities-trained professionals who can provide essential perspectives on AI's human impact. Most importantly, it requires leaders who model the integration of analytical rigor with humanistic wisdom, executives who can read both spreadsheets and the emotional temperature of their organizations, who understand both market dynamics and human psychology. The AI revolution presents us with a unique historical moment, an invitation to step back from our relentless pursuit of optimization and remember what we've been optimizing for. It challenges us to embrace both the power of artificial intelligence and the irreplaceable value of human wisdom, creativity, and compassion. The choice before us isn't between natural and artificial intelligence, but between narrow optimization and holistic flourishing. By embracing hybrid intelligence through the A-Frame approach and developing double literacy, we can create organizations and systems that don't just perform better, but contribute to a world where technology serves humanity's highest aspirations. The missing melody hasn't been lost, it's been waiting for us to remember how to play it. Costco quietly pulls popular product, upsets fans
One of the nice things about Costco is that the company likes to keep things fresh and interesting for members. Costco knows that consumers have plenty of options to shop for groceries and other essential items without having to pay an annual membership fee. But Costco also relies on those fees for a large chunk of its revenue. In fact, Costco's management team enjoys likening the shopping experience to a treasure hunt. The company is well aware that many consumers come in with a small shopping list only to walk out of the store with loaded carts. And the reason is that members frequently get enticed by new products at seemingly unbeatable prices. There's a reason for that. Costco wants to make sure every item on its shelves meets its standards for quality. It's easier to do that with a narrower selection of goods. Having fewer items means the company can spend more time negotiating with suppliers. The flip side of all of this, of course, is that to introduce new items, Costco has to rotate products outof its lineup. That often forces members to say goodbye to products they love. Earlier this year, Costco made the decision to stop selling its Kirkland Signature soy milk. Fans of the product were very upset to see it go, especially since many relied on it as a non-dairy alternative. Costco also recently did away with its Sweet Heat snack mix. The blend of spicy and sweet nuts was a big hit with customers, and many were surprised to discover that it was suddenly gone. While Costco stocks its share of fresh grocery products, the store also sells a host of frozen entrees that can be heated up for a quick, convenient meal. Last year, Costco members were excited to see smoked ham and Swiss cheese pockets hit the freezer section. The "pockets" were actually a flaky croissant that served as a delicious breakfast, lunch, or snack. And while some Costco locations may still have them, a number are reporting that the item has been discontinued. Needless to say, fans aren't happy. "I liked them, but now I can't find them in my Costco," one Reddit user said. "So good! My Costco had them for a couple months then they were discontinued," another user said. Unfortunately, the nature of Costco products is that they can appear suddenly without fanfare but disappear just as quickly. The takeaway? Members who fall in love with a given Costco product may want to stock up in case the company makes the decision to pull it without warning. They suggested buying a box of Costco bakery croissants, filling them with ham and cheese, and heating them up in an air fryer or toaster.
