Gen Z's Underground Social Network Just Went National and It's Blowing Up

Forbes18-04-2025
While most social platforms are trying to become the next TikTok, one startup is building something very different.
Fizz is a pseudonymous, hyperlocal app born on college campuses. Until recently, it was known as a kind of private campus message board; part Reddit, part group chat, but with the intimacy of a dorm hallway. No followers, no influencers, no pressure to perform. Just students talking to each other, anonymously or under pseudonyms, about the stuff that actually makes up daily life: dining hall food, econ finals, party rumors, roommate drama.
But five months ago, Fizz started quietly testing something new: a cross-campus product that connects students not just within their university, but across the country. The new feed layers shared identity, interests, geography and more, all while maintaining the local anonymity that made Fizz thrive in the first place.
Now, the results are in. Fizz's daily active users in the new product cohort have jumped 50% in three weeks. Content creation has nearly doubled. Engagement time has soared. And the app has grown by more than 50 campuses in just the last month—with zero marketing spend.
Teddy Solomon, 23, co-founded Fizz during the pandemic after dropping out of Stanford. The app, originally conceived as a hyperlocal space for students to speak freely, grew virally thanks to a flyer campaign and a thousand donuts hand-delivered to campuses.
But from day one, Solomon had a bigger vision. 'We always knew that once we became the dominant college app, we could offer something bigger,' he says. 'A global experience built around the same values: shared context, identity, experience—but across schools.'
The new version of Fizz, which rolled out to a quarter of its campuses this year, is exactly that. It uses a new personalized feed, powered by a recommendation engine, to surface content not just from a student's university, but from adjacent communities they naturally overlap with.
'If you're a Stanford student from New York, why shouldn't you see what's happening at Columbia or NYU?' Solomon says. 'If you're at Dartmouth, you probably have a lot in common with someone at Princeton. Or if you're at UT Austin, you might care what's going on at Texas A&M.'
Fizz didn't publicize the new feed at launch. They wanted to know: would people actually use it? Would it be sticky? Would it still feel authentic? Now, five months in, they have their answer.
'We've nearly doubled the content creation rate within the cross-campus cohort,' Solomon tells me. 'Engagement time has gone way up. And our daily user base has grown 1.5x just in the last few weeks.'
The app is also now adding 50 campuses a month, without paid acquisition, brand deals, or growth hacking. 'We don't spend a dollar,' he says. 'No influencers, no ambassadors. Just word of mouth.'
Fizz's expansion is fast. The cross-campus product is turning once-siloed communities into a national Gen Z social layer that still feels personal, still feels small.
Fizz's rise says as much about what it isn't as what it is. 'We're not TikTok,' Solomon says bluntly. 'We're not entertainment. We're not about performative content. We're about what's happening now, in your world, with people who get you.'
It's a key distinction. While Instagram and TikTok chase global virality, Fizz leans hard into hyper relevance: the inside joke, the anonymous confession, the econ final everyone just bombed.
On most platforms, only 1% of users post. On Fizz, 30% of weekly active users create content.
'The person who never leaves their room has the same voice as the frat star,' Solomon says. 'That's what makes Fizz different. You don't need to be perfect. You don't even need to be visible.'
The momentum isn't stopping at campuses. 'In the next week, we're expanding beyond college,' Solomon says. 'We've built something that works for Gen Z more broadly—whether they went to college or not.'
That move is significant. Most Gen Z social platforms don't make it past the campus stage. But Fizz is already seeing demand from users who dropped out, opted out, or never enrolled in the first place.
'When I visit campuses with 10% graduation rates, I know 90% of those students won't still be there in three years,' Solomon says. 'But they still deserve a community. They still deserve a voice.' Fizz is about to give them one.
With over $40 million raised, Fizz is quickly becoming one of the most important social startups in years. And it's doing it without the things we've come to associate with 'success' in the creator economy: no massive influencers, no addictive videos, no virality-first algorithms.
'We're building social media the way it was supposed to be,' Solomon says. 'Real connections. Real people. Real time.'

Hidden $3,000 per year cost of cashless revolt as record number hit: 'Uncomfortable truth'

For decades, cash was king. It felt safe, simple, and sensible. But with where the world is at today, that safety comes with a hidden cost — because your cash is going backwards. Right now, Aussies are sitting on record levels of cash. Based on current data, household bank deposits, including; savings, transaction accounts, term deposits, and offset balances are sitting at a record high level of $1.46 trillion dollars. RELATED Gen Z Aussie defends cash crusade after note on windscreen results in $97 parking fine 30,000 Aussie workers needed for Census jobs paying up to $60 per hour Huge push for four-day work week to become reality for all Australians But what most people don't realise is that any money you have sitting in cash is being eroded by inflation and tax. Because the interest you earn on a savings account is taxable at marginal tax rates of up to 47 per cent, and then on top the cost of everything is increasing each year with inflation, any money you have in cash is breaking even at best, and probably going backwards. If you're earning good money and stockpiling cash, the uncomfortable truth is that you're losing ground - and over time this adds up in a big way. Cash can't keep up Just to be clear, cash does have an important role to play. It's great for emergencies, short term goals, and giving you peace of mind. But anything beyond that, and it becomes a drag. There are three key reasons why. Firstly, inflation eats into your purchasing power. If inflation is running at the RBA's target of 3 per cent, $100,000 in the bank will effectively be worth only $97,000 in a year's time. Further, returns on cash are taxed. Even if you're earning 4.5 per cent interest, if you're paying 37 per cent tax, your after tax return is closer to 2.8 per cent - which is less than the inflation rate over the last few years. And finally but maybe most importantly, you miss out on compounding. Cash savings don't grow in a meaningful way over time, and definitely don't grow in the way investments do. The end result is that while having a good savings balance feels safe on the surface, this is silently costing you money every single month. There's a smarter alternative to hoarding cash The answer here isn't just to 'dump all of your money into the sharemarket' which could come with more risk than you need. Instead, what you need is a system - a smarter way to use your cash to build flexibility and momentum, without risking your financial progress. There are four key things you should be thinking about to make sure you're making the most of the money you have today. Keep the right amount of cash You most likely should be holding some of your money in cash — just not all of it. As a general rule of thumb, you should have a maximum of 3-6 months of your core spending in a high interest savings account for emergencies. This gives you peace of mind and will protect you from the unexpected. In addition, if you're planning a large expense, i.e. house deposit, school fees, or a holiday, cash is probably the right place for that money. But anything beyond this means you're overcapitalising in an underperforming asset, and probably costing yourself a bunch of money. Use offset accounts to kill bad debt faster If you've got a home loan, one of the best places for your savings is to put it to work against your debt. Instead of sitting cash in a savings account, parting it in an offset account will generally see you further ahead. An offset account reduces the amount of interest you're charged on your debt. So if your mortgage is $650,000, and you've got $50,000 in your offset, it means you're only paying interest on $600,000. That's a risk free and tax free return on your money at your current mortgage interest rate, which beats most savings accounts hands down. If you've got a loan and you're still saving into a regular savings account, think about using an offset account to get your money working harder for you. Automate investments into growth assets Once your buffer and debt strategy are sorted, it's time to get your cash growing. You can start by automating monthly investments into growth assets like ETFs or shares, or even directing the money towards an investment property. Doing this on a consistent schedule allows you to remove emotion and takes advantage of market cycles. This is where the long term compounding magic happens — and where your money starts actually building your wealth rather than just sitting still. BREAK IT DOWN: Investing just $1,000 monthly over a 20 year period would see your money grow to be worth around $739,964 based only on the long term Australian sharemarket return of 9.8 per cent. This compares to directing the same $1,000 monthly to a savings account at 4 per cent — where the money would grow to be worth only $366,775. That's a difference of $373,189 on exactly the same money and shows the power of getting quality growth assets behind you. Thankfully today technology is making this easier than ever before. Consider finding a low cost investment platform, and scheduling a fixed monthly transfer from your bank account directly into your investment accounts — and watch your money grow faster. The wrap Cash has its place — it gives you flexibility, stability, and peace of mind. But if most of your money is parked in cash, it's limiting your financial potential. With inflation not going away and the tax coming in on top, too much cash means slow progress. Smarter strategies, like minimising your savings, offset buffering, and automatic investing, all allow you to protect what matters while you grow your money. Cash has a role, but it's not the hero in your financial plan. Ben Nash is a finance expert commentator, podcaster, financial adviser and founder of Pivot Wealth. Embracing The Age Gap: The Value Of Generational Diversity In The Workplace

'Young people are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances. They think they know everything and are always quite sure about it.' This quote could easily have come from a frustrated manager's performance review today, but it's actually Aristotle, writing in the 4th century BCE. Apparently, complaining about 'kids these days' is at least as old as Western civilization, which is a shame because the tendency to dismiss younger generations is frustrating, divisive, unproductive, and demoralizing for everyone involved. When I became CEO in 2017, the Rayburn Electric Cooperative workforce was 60% Baby Boomers and 40% Gen X. Today, we're 60% Millennials, 23% Gen X, 11% Gen Z, and 7% Boomers. That shift wasn't a strategic goal or a benchmark we tried consciously to achieve to meet some quota or other. It happened because we were clear about what really matters: performance, potential, and culture alignment. Age never made the list. We've established a culture where generational diversity feels normal. Our goal is to recruit people ready to roll up their sleeves, lead with integrity, and grow with us. Regardless of their age, every person has value and can contribute. We have six director-level positions at Rayburn: one held by a Boomer, two by Gen X, and five by Millennials. We don't let age get in the way. If you're performing well, we'll reward you. There's no entitlement here—longevity doesn't automatically mean advancement. We're not immune to generational tensions, by any means. The first Millennial we hired was paired with a seasoned Boomer, and it was oil and water from day one. I finally pulled the younger employee aside and tried to counsel him. 'If you can show up at 7:30 a.m. and recognize this will be challenging for about a year, what follows will be great. But one thing this Boomer will really respect is if you show up early.' The response? 'All y'all do is sit there and tell stories.' I explained that those stories contained Rayburn's history, the why behind our processes, and institutional knowledge you can't get anywhere else. But he never quite got it. He continued to struggle with his mature partner because he felt like he wasn't respected. And honestly, that was pretty true. That is, until we had a leaky tank. He rolled up his sleeves, got underneath that tank, and did everything necessary to fix the problem. That's when he finally earned that respect he craved. Bridging the generational divide isn't impossible—it just requires something we don't always teach anymore: patience, humility, and time in the trenches. We believe that success lives where experience comes together with a fresh perspective. When those two things align, innovation happens. Recently, we had a seasoned compliance professional who wanted to find a quicker, more efficient way to track regulatory reporting. A younger team member came in with fresh ideas for monitoring and analysis that had never been tried before in compliance. What started as a specific improvement snowballed into entirely new ways of doing both jobs better. The workforce of the future won't be won by the oldest or the youngest. It'll be built by those willing to listen across the table and learn both ways. At Rayburn, we don't sort people by generation. We unite them around purpose. That makes all the difference.
