MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (WHNT) — Muscle Shoals High School Senior, Kate Scales, recently won Governor Kay Ivey's App Challenge Contest.
Scales won the contest for the design and creation of her application called 'Tutor Me', an app that allows students to sign up and schedule tutors in a more efficient way.

Scales had to use her computer science and application knowledge, as well as coding, to make the app come alive to enter the contest.
Scales then had to make a video to talk about what she created and how it works, and why she wanted to make her app about tutoring. Scales tells News 19 why she created a tutor app and why it's so important.
'I think it's important because so many people do you need tutors at some point and some of them aren't bold enough to go ask around or ask their teachers for a list of available tutors so this would make it pretty much anonymous or easy to connect with other people,' Scales said.
Scales also tells News 19 that she plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall to study computer science.
This is the second app Scales has created for the classroom. She also created a mental health app that allows anyone struggling with mental health, an easy and anonymous way to seek help.

Broadband project brings internet to 600 homes in Killingsworth Cove

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Killingsworth Cove is still recovering from the damage that an EF-2 tornado left behind last week, but a longtime project has finally been completed that could possibly help that community moving forward. 'To see the outpouring of support, the constant messages through Facebook and on my personal phone of people want to come out and help the organizations that have disaster relief supplies and money that want to donate that to the to the affected families, it's been awesome,' Killingsworth Cove Volunteer Fire Captain Nathan Aston said. City of Hanceville won't have police department until 2026, will sell off vehicles The storm damage cleanup process continues, but on Thursday, the community received an announcement: 600 homes in Killingsworth Cove will have access to fiber optic broadband internet. 'It just makes it more evident that how this underserved community, how important this broadband project is to them,' Madison County Commissioner Craig Hill said. In addition to a lack of internet resources, Killingsworth Cove has poor cell reception. Broadband means more access to services that could come in handy for future severe weather, like WIFI calling. 'A lot of family members could not get in touch with their family members, and we have generator power on all of our systems,' said New Hope Telephone Cooperative General Manager Daniel Martin. 'So, if they have a battery backup at the house or they have a home generator, those services will continue to work always.' 'Grateful to be alive, it's a miracle': Muscle Shoals woman paralyzed after tree falls on her car during storms The Killingsworth Cove Volunteer Fire Department has relied on dial-up internet, and Aston said this change will help them better connect with the community they serve. 'We've been trying get our department, as remote as it is, access to the broadband Internet so that we could get access to training materials, lifesaving things, even our AEDs have to update over Internet for their services and supplies, and we just weren't able to do any of that,' Aston said. This is Madison County's first public-private broadband partnership, and Hill said he hopes to see broadband availability spread to other communities like Maysville and Gurley. The two-million-dollar Killingsworth Cove project was funded by the American Rescue Plan and New Hope Telephone Cooperative. Hill said he has been working on this project for several years. The infrastructure is officially in place, and some living in Killingsworth Cove are already connected. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 23andMe just got bought out of bankruptcy

23andMe (ME) will have a second life. The genetic-testing company, which had a $6 billion valuation at the time of its 2021 IPO, declared bankruptcy in late March. Today the company announced its purchase by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals for $256 million, in a deal expected to finalized in the third quarter of 2025. Regeneron is a biotech company using proprietary technology producing antibodies to treat cancer and diseases of the eye, brain, blood, cardiovascular system and others. Its current market cap is $64.2 billion. When 23andMe declared bankruptcy, there were myriad concerns about users' privacy, especially after a 2023 data breach affecting 6.9 million people. This April, the company was subjected to a Congressional investigation into the fate of its users' sensitive information. The sale to Regeneron makes some synergistic sense: In February 2024, 23andMe signaled its intent to sell user data to pharmaceutical companies, like its longtime partner GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). About 85% of users had voluntarily opted to allow their information to be used for medical research, a company spokesperson told NPR in late 2024. 23andMe had been struggling in the wake of the data breach, with its stock tumbling by 98 percent from 2021 to November 2024. It then halted work on new therapies, laid off hundreds of employees and agreed to a $30 million settlement related to the breach. After the initial novelty of learning one's family roots, consumer interest in 23andMe plateaued. Many of the 15 million users who paid the company for the initial ancestry test didn't follow up with other features, a 'one and done' business model that prompted questions about the company's sustainability. Co-founder Anne Wojcicki viewed monetization of data mining as the future of 23andMe. Wojcicki made repeated attempts to take the company private in the past year. The most recent was in early March; she stepped down as CEO later that month, when Chapter 11 proceedings began. The Regeneron purchase does not include Lemonaid, a 23andMe telehealth subsidiary that will be wound down. Regeneron says it will honour the existing privacy policies of 23andMe, which will operate as a 'wholly owned direct or indirect subsidiary.' For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
