Canada's Wickens to drive feature race at home 7 years after crash left him paralyzed

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario (AP) — Robert Wickens' promising racing career seemed as if it was cut tragically short after a 2018 crash left him paralyzed from the chest down.
But almost seven years later, Wickens is racing in the headline event of the Chevrolet Grand Prix, competing at the highest levels of his sport in Canada for the first time since that accident.
The event is at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, a course Wickens grew up around and where his dream of becoming a professional race car driver first began to take shape.
'It's been a long time since I've raced a home race as the headline class,' Wickens said Thursday. 'The Toronto Indy in 2018 would have been the last time, and thankfully, we finished on the podium there.'
Racing IMSA GTD, the highest class of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, on a track where he used to watch his heroes compete as a boy, is a full-circle moment for Wickens.
'I raced a lot of the cart track just next door, and when I wasn't on track, I'd ride my bike over to the car track and watch whatever car was driving around,' Wickens said. 'Whether it was a IMSA race weekend or a regional kind of Formula Ford race, or a Canadian NASCAR race, anything in between.
'I feel like I knew every inch of this track, even though I didn't drive it much.'
Wickens' professional career officially began in 2005 when, at 16, he started racing in Formula BMW USA with Team Apex Racing USA. As a result, he didn't spend much time at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park like many Canadians in motorsport do, instead cutting his teeth in the United States and Europe before graduating to IndyCar in 2017.
After getting a full ride with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports at the start of the 2018 season, Wickens was named the Indianapolis 500 rookie of the year that May after leading two laps and finishing ninth in the race.
Wickens continued to thrive that summer, finishing third at the Honda Indy Toronto on July 15, 2018 and climbing to sixth in the IndyCar rankings.
Disaster struck just over a month later, on Aug. 19, when he sustained a serious spinal cord injury in a catastrophic crash during the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway that left him partially paralyzed.
Using hand controls, Wickens resumed driving after his injury and, this year, began racing a Corvette for DXDT Racing in the Sprint Cup of the IMSA SportsCar Championship.
Back competing at the highest levels of North American motorsport, Wickens said 'it's amazing' to be part of the Chevrolet Grand Prix.
'I love the added attention of a hometown race,' he said. 'I think any racing driver wants that spotlight moment. You want to be the quarterback in the fourth quarter at the two-minute warning with the game on the line and the ball in your hands.'
Wickens' goal for the Chevrolet Grand Prix is straightforward: run a mistake-free event.
'I think in the IMSA WeatherTech, SportsCar Championship, you can't expect success, you have to work for it,' said Wickens, noting that Corvette has won 13 races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park since 2001. 'You have to be perfect.
'So far, in my few races that I've done in the Corvette, we've shown a lot of potential, but we haven't been perfect, and because of that, we haven't gotten the end result.'
Because Wickens is racing on home soil for the first time since his accident, he's offering all kinds of unique fan experiences through his website. That includes a tour of DXDT Racing, a personal tour of his Corvette Z06 GT3.R with his custom-made Bosch electronic hand control system, and a photo op on the track.
Wickens has also organized a viewing section for anyone who wants to join outside of Turn 2, his favorite place to watch races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park when he was growing up.
'It's such a family sport. It's a lot of parents that love the sport, it's generational fandom,' Wickens said. 'I think it's so important when you see kids around that they just have a great experience because that was me growing up, right?
'I remember my first Toronto Indy, or my first time at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park and meeting drivers and getting autographs and seeing the car firsthand and just how welcoming it's always been. Now I feel like it's my turn with the baton to run that back.'

2025 English Premier League Predictions: Ranking the Top 6 Teams

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup under a year away, all eyes will be on the upcoming English Premier League campaign. The EPL is home to some of the biggest and brightest stars in world soccer, many of whom will star for their countries in next summer's 48-team tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy last season after an outstanding 84-point season and added more attacking talent this season with big-money transfers for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. But is this the year Arsenal finally lift the trophy? Can Manchester City reclaim their throne? Let's take a look at the top of the Premier League and where each team ranks entering the season: Note: League positions reflect last season's finish. Last year, the Reds ran away with the Premier League title, besting second-place Arsenal by 10 points. Despite the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota, Liverpool has only gotten better this summer. Arne Slot's side has been the big winner of this transfer window, dropping north of $350 million on backup keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, and forwards Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. No wonder they're the favorites to retain the English title. After finishing fourth in the Prem last term, the Blues stunned many by winning the expanded, 32-team Club World Cup in July. Can they harness that momentum and use it to challenge for English and European titles next spring? They've got the firepower. Chelsea already have an emerging superstar in winger Cole Palmer — this season he'll be supported by new recruits like strikers Liam Delap and João Pedro, Pedro's fellow Brazilian attacker Estêvão, and English forward Jamie Gittens. The Premier League runner-up in each of the last three seasons, what Mikel Arteta's team is missing at this point are trophies. Still, Arsenal continues to improve. The Gunners knocked then-Champions League holders Real Madrid out of Europe's top club tournament last April, snaring a convincing 5-1 aggregate win. And they've added real quality this summer in the form of defensive midfielder Martín Zubimendi and forwards Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke. City's unprecedented run of four consecutive Premier League titles came to a halt last season, when Pep Guardiola's side finished third, lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace, and were eliminated from European play before the Champions League's round of 16 even began. This team is too good not to bounce back in a big way this year, though — even without club legend Kevin de Bruyne, whose contract wasn't extended. The Magpies eked into the Champions League places last term only because UEFA granted England's top flight one additional spot. Newcastle fans aren't complaining though, though they will be if and when star forward Alexander Isak leaves for Liverpool on the eve of the new season. It's hard to believe that the 20-time English champions finished 15th last season, when they also lost the Europa League final to Premier League rivals Tottenham. But the Red Devils added forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško this window, and they should fare better in Ruben Amorim's first full season at the Old Trafford helm. This Week's Hlinka Gretzky Cup Kicks Off The 2026 NHL Draft Season

It's guaranteed to be North America vs. Europe playing for gold. The tournament's two semi-finals will take place on Friday at 1 p.m. ET, with TV coverage on NHL Network in the U.S. and TSN in Canada. In Brno, Czechia, Canada will face the United States while Sweden will take on Finland in Trencin, Slovakia. The winners will play for gold on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, also on NHL Network and TSN, while the bronze-medal game goes at the same time in the other venue. Held every August, the Hlinka Gretzky Cup marks the beginning of each year's draft prospect season. Presented by the Czech and Slovak hockey federations along with Hockey Canada, the tournament alternates between Europe and Alberta each year, and features some of the best under-18 hockey talent in the world. This year is a European edition, with games played in Czechia and Slovakia. While not an official International Ice Hockey Federation event, the current tournament structure excludes Russia, which remains banned from IIHF competition following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The eight-team field for the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup was split into two groups of four for the round-robin, which ran Monday through Wednesday. Canada emerged from Group A with a perfect 3-0-0-0 record, while Sweden did the same in Group B. By beating Czechia 4-1 and getting to overtime in a 4-3 loss to Switzerland, Finland collected four points to claim second place and reach the medal round in Group A. Team USA comfortably beat Slovakia and Germany but saw a 3-1 lead evaporate in a 5-3 loss to the Swedes, landing them second in Group B. That sets up the Czechs and Slovaks to play for fifth place earlier on Friday in Brno, while Switzerland and Germany square off for seventh. The Swedes put up the most impressive stat line during the preliminary round, outscoring their opponents 22-3 on aggregate. Marcus Nordmark, whose father Robert Nordmark played 236 NHL games in the late 80s and early 90s, led the way offensively with nine points . His teammate Elton Hermansson was right behind with four goals and seven points. Both players are early projections as first-round picks in the 2026NHL draft. In net, Swedish goaltender Milo Tjarnlund delivered shutouts against Germany and Slovakia. Douglas Nilsson got the tougher assignment against the U.S., shutting the door to allow Sweden to come back from a 3-1 deficit and earn a 5-3 win. As the other undefeated team, Canada outscored its three opponents 19-4, but had to rely on some third-period outbursts to run up those offensive numbers. In their opener against Finland, the Canadians were locked in a 2-2 tie until late in the second period. Against Switzerland on Tuesday, they were up just 1-0 before the floodgates opened in the third. The situation was the same as they closed out against Czechia on Wednesday. In net, Gavin Betts of the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs earned the shutout against the Czechs. Offensively, Ethan Belchetz, a 6-foot-5 forward with the Windsor Spitfires, has arguably been Canada's most dominant player so far. He has five points, as do Adam Valentini of the OHL's Kitchener Ranagers and Mathis Preston from the WHL's Spokane Chiefs. The Ruck twins, Liam and Markus, who play for the reigning WHL champion Medicine Hat Tigers, have also stood out, as has 2027 draft-eligible defenseman Landon DuPont. The Hlinka Gretzky Cup is an interesting tournament for the Americans. The roster does not include any players from the U.S. National Team Development Program, which will play together as a team at the IIHF's World U18 Championship next April. This group is comprised of players from the USHL, U.S. high schools and Canadian leagues including major junior and Junior A leagues such as the BCHL. This year, the U.S. team is captained by forward Luke Puchner, who's attending the renowned hockey prep school Shattuck St. Mary's in his home state of Minnesota. Through the round robin, the U.S. offense has been led by South Jersey's Blake Zielinski, a 2027 commit to Providence College who is set to return to the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers this fall. Zielinski tallied six points during the preliminary round. Gavin McKenna is a top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft who is not taking part in this year's tournament. McKenna, who's projected to go No. 1 next June and will suit up for Penn State University this fall, won gold with Canada at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and also played at the 2025 U20 World Junior Championship as a 17-year-old. This summer, he was part of Canada's roster at the World Junior Summer Showcase. Sweden's Ivar Stenberg and Viggo Bjorck are also expected to be high 2026 picks, and skated at the Summer Showcase. Like McKenna, both were also part of the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Stenberg was a standout, tied for third in tournament scoring with 10 points as Sweden took the bronze medal.
