Matt Wallner Nearing Return to Minnesota Twins Lineup – New Injury Timeline Update
The Minnesota Twins pulled out yet another victory on Saturday afternoon, this time against division rival Kansas City. That makes manager Rocco Baldelli & Co. 16-2 in their last 18 games.
Heading into the evening, Minnesota holds sole possession of 2nd place in the AL Central, now just 3.5 games back of the Detroit Tigers, who currently hold the best record in the American League, at 33-19. And the good news continues to roll in for the red-hot MN Twins.

On Friday, news broke that 31-year-old center fielder Byron Buxton — who remains on the concussion list after colliding with Carlos Correa in shallow center over a week ago — is getting very close to his return.

This, now a couple of days after the other 2012 top two overall draft pick involved in that outfield crash last week found his way off the concussion list and back into the Twins lineup. Buxton following behind Correa throughout this process is no surprise, given Byron's past history with head injuries.
Bring on all the good news Minnesota Twins injury updates
On more than just a baseball level, it is very good to hear that Buck is feeling better. But the good news injury updates continued to roll in on Saturday. This time, it involved Matt Wallner, who has been out since mid-April with a hamstring strain, but recently began a rehab assignment with the St. Paul Saints.

According to SKOR North's Declan Goff — who's been on the Twins' home beat for a couple of seasons now — reported that the 27-year-old outfielder will get today off, before traveling with the Saints to continue his rehab assignment on the road, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Then, at some point next week during Minnesota's upcoming 10-game road trip, reports Declan, Matt Wallner is expected to re-join the Twins lineup.

Looking ahead, that 1.5 weeks on the road will begin with a series in Tampa Bay, vs the Rays. After they are finished with the Rays, they'll fly cross-country for three in Seattle vs the Mariners, before wrapping up the extended trip with four games in Sacramento vs the Athletics.
When can we expect Matt Wallner back and how has he been feeling?
If I were to use context clues in order to project Matt's return to Minnesota's active roster, I'd pin it on Friday, May 30. That is the Twins' first game of the road trip out West. Of course, should something happen that requires Wallner to rejoin the lineup sooner than anticipated, I think it's safe to say he'd be ready.

In the first two games of his rehab assignment with the St. Paul Saints (both vs the Norfolk Tides), Matt Wallner went 5-of-9 (.556) with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored. He's done most of his damage via two home runs in his rehab debut. The Forest Lake, MN native then returned the next night and smacked a double.
Prior to being placed on the injured list, Matt was one of the best and most consistent hitters in a Minnesota Twins lineup that desperately needed it, at the time. Whenever Wallner is eventually activated, he will look to improve on an already impressive .263/.373/.474 slash line.

In 57 big league at-bats so far this season, the Twins starting right fielder is touting an .847 OPS and 135 OPS+. Batting exclusively in the leadoff spot, Matt Wallner has batted in three runs and scored another seven.

He's splattered numbers all over the box score, hitting one homer, five doubles and a triple, to go with 19 strikeouts and 9 walks. We'll see if Rocco wants to insert Matt back into the leadoff role, and if so, how quickly.

Best NBA Finals Game 1 Player Props: Chet Holmgren Poised For Big Night?
Thunder F Chet Holmgren is a tempting option in multiple player prop markets tonight after averaging 18 points and 6 rebounds per game vs. Minnesota in the Western Conference Finals. Thunder F Chet Holmgren is a tempting option in multiple player prop markets tonight after averaging 18 points and 6 rebounds per game vs. Minnesota in the Western Conference Finals. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With the NBA Finals getting underway tonight in Oklahoma City (tipoff: 8:30 p.m. ET; TV: ABC), it's time to go on the record with our picks and best bets for Game 1 of Pacers vs. Thunder. Will stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Tyrese Haliburton continue their remarkable playoff runs by once again putting up big numbers? Or do the role players in this series make for the best NBA Finals Game 1 player prop bets? Chet Holmgren o16.5 Points (-105 at DraftKings) -- 1 unit The versatile Thunder big man quietly was as effective in the Western Conference Finals as any player besides SGA. Holmgren averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds per game vs. the Timberwolves, and he scored 20-plus points while playing 30 minutes or more in three of the last four games of that series. He finished with 22 points in Game 2, 21 in G4 and 22 in G5 (when he easily cashed both props we recommended). Thanks to the attention that SGA and Jalen Williams command, Holmgren gets great looks in this offense, regardless of the opponent. In Game 5 vs. the Wolves, for example, Holmgren went 8-for-13 from the floor, with five dunk/layup attempts, four 3-pointers and four mid-range looks. His shot diet was even more favorable in Game 4 vs. Minnesota, with a 9-for-14 night that featured eight layup/dunk attempts and four 3-pointers. In what appears to be a favorable matchup vs. the Pacers, we expect Holmgren to get plenty more of the best shots in basketball. Holmgren did not play in either regular-season matchup between these teams this year, but he scored 15 points apiece in two games vs. the Pacers in 2023-24. While Holmgren is not the 3-point threat or paint presence that Karl-Anthony Towns is, KAT's dominance of the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals (the NYK big man averaged 24.8 points on 50 percent FG shooting and 12.2 boards per game vs. Indiana) still bodes well for Holmgren's prospects as a scorer and rebounder in this series. One of the biggest questions regarding Holmgren is his usage, as OKC has another quality big in Isaiah Hartenstein. But Thunder coach Mark Daigneault showed in the WCF that he'll lean on whoever gives his team the best chance to win. Case in point: While Holmgren has averaged at least 28 minutes per game in each of the Thunder's three Western Conference playoff series, Hartenstein played just under 20 minutes per game in the conference final matchup vs. Minnesota. Against a Pacers team that spreads the floor with shooters at all times, there's a good chance Holmgren will log 30-plus minutes per night. For a player with a realistic chance to consistently score 20 or more in this series -- especially if (when?) these games become track meets -- Holmgren at -105 to go over 16.5 points feels like a slam-dunk. Holmgren's Points + Rebounds props are another good way to go tonight, including over 26.5 P+R (+102 at FD) and over 27.5 P+R (+124 at FD). S. Gilgeous-Alexander o41.5 Pts + Assists (+108 at FD) -- 1 unit Even if you're bullish on SGA to light up a Pacers team that he torched for 33 and 45 points in two regular-season games this year, he's hardly tempting at -110 to go over 33.5 points tonight. That said, after recording 53 P+A (45 points, 8 assists) in the first OKC-IND meeting of the season on December 26 and 41 (33 points, 8 assists) in the rematch on March 29, I expect the 2025 NBA MVP to have a big Game 1 as both a passer and scorer. Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard deserves every bit of credit he's gotten for how well he defended Jalen Brunson in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. He limited the Knicks' top scorer to 9 points in 44 partial possessions when guarded by Nembhard in that game, according to But SGA is A) coming off a terrific offensive series vs. a good defensive team in Minnesota and B) he had plenty of regular-season success vs. Nembhard when these teams met earlier this year. On December 26, in 32.8 partial possessions when guarded by Nembhard, SGA had 16 points and two assists on 7-for-8 FG shooting (2-for-2 3PT). Nembhard held SGA to 11 points on 4-for-10 FG shooting and 1 assist in 37.2 partial possessions on March 29, but the Thunder scored 51 points as a team in those possesions (an effective clip of 1.37 points per possession). And we haven't even mentioned Nembhard's physicality, which is a huge reason he's an effective 1-on-1 defender. That could easily get him in foul trouble against one of the most effective players in the league at getting to the free-throw line, though. The other reason to back SGA tonight -- and throughout this series, assuming his over/under prop lines remain somewhat reasonable -- is how Indiana fared against the last two star guards it faced this postseason. Style-wise, there's no mistaking Gilgeous-Alexander for either Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell or Brunson. Still, those players' success against Indiana is nevertheless worth noting here. Mitchell averaged 34.2 points and 3.8 assists per game in five games vs. the Pacers in the Eastern Conference semis (39.75 ppg if we exclude his hobbled 20-minute appearance in Game 4). Brunson averaged 30.7 points and 5.7 assists per game vs. Indiana this postseason while making more than half of his 20.8 FGA per game in the ECF. Paul Skenes to Red Sox? Insane Trade Thought Pushed by MLB Network Host
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last year's National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes, the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick, continues to pitch at a Cy Young Award-worthy level, but his talents are seemingly being wasted on the Pittsburgh Pirates. After finishing 10 games under .500 last season, 17 games out in last place in the NL Central, the Pirates are even worse this year — already 15 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs and 13 games under .500 with 100 games remaining. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 4: Paul Skenes #30 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during batting practice before the game against the Houston Astros at PNC Park on June 4, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 4: Paul Skenes #30 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during batting practice before the game against the Houston Astros at PNC Park on June 4, 2025 in Pittsburgh, the same time, Skenes leads the National League in pitcher WAR at 3.2, WHIP at 0.88, and fewest hits allowed per nine innings with 5.8. His 2.05 ERA is second in the league. Skenes has also been a workhorse, with NL-best figures in games started (13), innings pitched (83 1/3), and complete games, though his league-leading total in the latter category is one. Yet with the Pirates, Skenes this year has a losing record of 4-6. The Pirates have lost eight of his 13 starts. In fact, in nine of his starts, Skenes has pitched at least six innings while allowing two or fewer earned runs. The Pirates record in those games is 4-5. With all of that in mind, MLB Network studio host Greg Amsinger threw out a wild idea. "So every fifth day we're going watch Paul Skenes shove and the Pirates lose 1-0 or 2-0. We're going to do that every fifth day?" Amsinger asked his co-hosts, former players Dan PLesac and Harold Reynolds, on a Wednesday broadcast. Then he pitched his trade idea. "If Paul Skenes were traded to the Boston Red Sox for Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell, would you do it if you were the Pirates?" More MLB: Pirates Owner Wasting Paul Skenes Era, 'Should be Embarrassed,' MLB Analyst Says Mayer, Anthony and Campbell are known as the "Big Three" among Red Sox fans, as the organization's three top prospects. Mayer and Campbell have already made it to the Boston big league roster. Anthony is the No. 1 prospect in baseball, though for some reason the Red Sox have kept him at Triple-A Worcester all season so far. Together, that big three, along with several other highly-rated Red Sox prospects, represent the future of the Boston organization. Plesac, who pitched 18 seasons in MLB for six different teams, wasn't having it. "I'm not into trading him," Plesac said, referring to Skenes. "He's the identity of the Pirates. He's the one attraction that you have to get you to go out and watch a Pirate game." The MLB Network hosts did not address, however, the Red Sox's perspective on the proposed trade. Would the Red Sox sell their future for Skenes, even with four years of team control for the 22-year-old prodigy? It should be noted the Red Sox already have a starting pitcher who this season has been arguably as good as Skenes, or at least very close to his level. Has left-hander Garret Crochet fared better with Boston than Skenes with Pittsburgh? Crochet has a better ERA than Skenes at 1.98, and he leads the American League in strikeouts with 101 (Skenes has fanned 85). Crochet has also started 13 games, and thrown a league-leading 82 innings. His won-loss record with the Red Sox is 5-4. In his seven starts of at least six innings, allowing two runs or fewer, the Red Sox are 5-2. More MLB: Red Sox Frustrate Fans With Call-Up of Triple-A Outfielder Not Named Roman Anthony
