Seoul prosecutors charge duo with blackmail after YouTuber Tzuyang paid to silence threats over coerced past
SEOUL, May 10 — Two women have been charged with blackmailing popular mukbang YouTuber Tzuyang, real name Park Jeong-won, out of 216 million won (US$154,300) in a South Korean court, Korea JoongAng Daily reported yesterday.
The blackmail charges, made under the Act on the Punishment of Violent Acts, were issued on April 24 by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office for the women known only by their surnames. One was surnamed Song (32) and the other Kim (29).
The blackmail allegedly took place between June 2021 and November 2022, when the women reportedly threatened to expose Tzuyang's past.
In a video posted last year, Tzuyang revealed that her former agency CEO and ex-boyfriend, surnamed Lee, informed her of the women's threats.
'They're threatening to expose that you worked with them at an adult entertainment venue, so let's pay them off to keep them quiet,' Lee was quoted to have said.
Tzuyang explained that she was coerced into working at the venue due to Lee's violence and intimidation.
The women, who had no prior connection to her, allegedly used information from Lee to carry out their threats.
A producer from Tzuyang's channel met with the women and reached an agreement.
In return for silence, Tzuyang paid them 200 million won, disguised as an advance for a fake YouTube show deal, plus monthly payments of 6 million won.
The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul launched an investigation in July 2024 after Tzuyang's producer filed a criminal complaint.
Though arrest warrants for Kim and others were requested, the court denied them, citing insufficient evidence and no flight risk.
The women were not detained but reportedly apologised to Tzuyang's team late last year.
Despite their apology, prosecutors have proceeded with the indictment, stressing the seriousness of the crime due to the large sum involved.
Joint blackmail carries harsher penalties than regular blackmail, which can lead to up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won.
Kim Tae-yeon, Tzuyang's lawyer, stated that blackmailing public figures by threatening to release private information for money is a severe crime and that appropriate punishment is needed to prevent similar incidents.

French mayor to face trial for alleged sex tape blackmail of political rival
LYON, June 7 — A French mayor accused of using a sex tape to blackmail a political rival is set to go on trial in September after a court yesterday ordered him to face criminal proceedings. Gael Perdriau, who leads the city of Saint-Etienne in central France, is accused of orchestrating the plot in 2015, using footage of his deputy with a male escort. The two magistrates investigating the case ordered that Perdriau, 52, be tried for blackmail, theft, embezzlement of public funds by a public official and participation in a criminal association, Lyon's chief prosecutor Thierry Dran said in a statement. The case, triggered by a whistleblower in 2022, involves a 2015 video of former deputy mayor Gilles Artigues receiving a massage from a male escort in a Paris hotel. Perdriau allegedly demanded political loyalty and electoral concessions from Artigues in return for keeping the compromising video private, according to court documents seen by AFP. Despite being ousted from the conservative Republicans party and under pressure to resign, Perdriau has maintained his innocence and continues to hold office—even hinting at a 2026 re-election bid. The trial is set to take place between September 22 and 26, pending any appeals, the prosecutor added. Perdriau declined to comment when contacted by AFP on Friday, while his lawyers could not be reached for comment. — AFP

Four charged in Singapore after ‘spiritual' scam leaves victim with bag of leaves
SINGAPORE, June 7 — Four Chinese nationals have been charged in court in Singapore for allegedly orchestrating a scam that saw victims deceived into handing over cash and jewellery for so-called religious blessing rituals. According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Huang Ximing, 61, Zhong Weifeng, 58, Huang Qinyan, 47, and Huang Meiling, 56, each face two counts of cheating in furtherance of a conspiracy, the Singapore Police Force said in a statement yesterday. The alleged scam came to light after a victim lodged a police report on June 3, claiming she had been approached by three women in Chinatown. According to charge sheets, the incident began when Huang Meiling asked the victim for directions to a Chinese physician. Zhong Weifeng then stepped in, claiming to know one. Zhong reportedly told the victim that the physician could only consult outside her premises due to overcrowding and asked the victim to pose as a relative. The two then led her to Huang Qinyan, who allegedly posed as the physician and told the victim she was 'experiencing misfortune due to negative spiritual elements'. The three women arranged to meet the victim at Hong Lim Park, where she was persuaded to hand over S$700 (RM2,300) in cash and a gold necklace with a 'Guan Yin' pendant. Huang Qinyan is said to have placed the items in a black plastic bag and performed a blessing ritual, before instructing the victim to store the bag unopened under her bed for a month. When the victim opened the bag the next day, she found only leaves inside. A day later, police received another report of a similar scam in the Clementi area. In this case, two women allegedly approached a second victim, noticed cash in her bag, and convinced her to place her money — totalling S$700 — into a black trash bag for 'safekeeping'. The cash later went missing. The four accused were arrested on June 5 following extensive ground enquiries and CCTV analysis. The gold necklace was recovered, and police also seized S$1,311 and 10,050 Chinese yuan in cash. Charges state that on June 3 at around 3pm, near Commonwealth Avenue West, the group acted in concert to deceive another victim into believing they had special techniques to protect her valuables. She was allegedly tricked into handing over an envelope of cash to Huang Meiling and Huang Qinyan. Huang Ximing, Zhong, and Huang Qinyan appeared via video link in court, where the prosecution sought a one-week remand with permission to take them out for investigations, citing the need to trace potential accomplices, identify more victims, and conduct scene visits. The court granted the application. Huang Meiling was charged separately. All four are due to return to court on June 13.
