Elon Musk's AI startup xAI has reportedly implemented a controversial policy which requires all its employees to install a 'spyware software' on their laptops issued by the company. This move of the company which aims to enhance the security has started discussions about the privacy of the employees. As reported by Business Insider, the staff at xAI involved in the training of Grok has been asked to install a monitoring tool called Hubstaff, which will keep a track of the websites visited, apps used, mouse movements and more.
Elon Musk's AI startup xAI ask employees to install 'spy software' on their laptops
According to a report by Business Insider, Elon Musk's AI startup has asked the employees training Grok to download and install a workforce management system called Hubstaff. This monitoring toll is designed to keep track of employee activity including keystrokes, screen activity, and application usage.
The company has not yet revealed the exact reason behind this new policy, but it is speculated to be a response to the highly competitive and sensitive nature of AI development, where intellectual property and data security are paramount.
Initially, the directive applied to all employees, regardless of whether they had company-issued laptops, with a July 11 deadline for compliance. Later the company asked the employees using their personal devices to either purchase a new device using the xAI $50 per month tech stipend or create different profiles to separate their work from personal browsing.

The company's HR team said that the new software would help the company in streamlining the work process and will also offer better insights into daily tutoring activities. 'This new tool serves to streamline work processes, provide clearer insights into daily tutoring activities, and ensure resources align with Human Data priorities," the company's human resources team said in a mass email to employees.
However, the employees feel that the new monitoring tool is 'surveillance disguised as productivity'.
The report further adds that apart from Hubstaff, xAI also uses HR manager Rippling to clock the hours of workers. Along with this, the company's in-house system Starfleet tracks the amount of time the tutors spent on each task.
Elon Musk's xAI apologises for what 'happened on July 8
Meanwhile, it has been a tough time for xAI. The Elon Musk-owned company apologised 'for the horrific behaviour that many experienced' for 16 hours, starting on July 8. Through the official Grok account on X (formerly Twitter), the AI company said that 'the update was to provide helpful and truthful responses to users' but it spit out responses which 'contained extremist views.'
xAI has also provided an explanation on what went wrong. It said that the incident stemmed from a July code update that activated deprecated instructions, causing Grok to reflect extremist views from X posts for 16 hours, a vulnerability not anticipated despite pre-release testing, as revealed by xAI's investigation.

These 10 ChatGPT prompts might change your day-to-day life forever, AI expert explains why
An X post has gone viral after user Louis Gleeson, who is an AI expert, claimed that ChatGPT is the technology that has changed his life the most. In his latest post on X, he shared 10 specific prompts he says have transformed his day-to-day routine. Gleeson, founder of Sentient, a marketing agency that works with AI and technology companies, says the prompts can be tailored to enhance learning, develop business ideas, and support personal decision-making. The prompts cover a range of uses, from simplifying complex topics and generating startup roadmaps to creating viral content and providing personal development advice. Examples include asking ChatGPT to act as a 20-year industry veteran to explain a subject in simple terms, seeking a 'brutally honest' thought partner to challenge assumptions, and turning rough notes into polished, high-engagement social media posts. Learn anything from a 20-year expert even if you're clueless 'Pretend you are an expert with 20 years of experience in {industry/topic}. Break down the core principles a total beginner must understand. Use analogies, step-by-step logic, and simplify everything like I'm 5.' Brutally honest thought partner to sharpen your thinking 'Act as my personal thought partner. I'll describe {my idea/problem}, and I want you to question every assumption, point out blind spots, and help me evolve it into something 10x better.' Copywriting that actually converts 'You're a world-class copywriter. Rewrite this {landing page/sales pitch/email} to convert better. Make it punchy, concise, and persuasive. Use proven frameworks like PAS or AIDA. Here's the original: {paste it}.' Psychoanalyse yourself like a Nobel psychologist would 'Act like a Nobel-winning psychologist. Analyse my behaviour pattern: {describe it}. What's likely causing it? What mindset shifts, habits, or actions would help me overcome it?' Startup roadmap from idea to $10k revenue 'Be my startup mentor. I have this idea: {idea}. Help me refine it, validate the market, uncover monetisation options, and outline a roadmap from MVP to first $10k in revenue.' Learn hard topics like you're 10 and actually remember them 'Teach me {any complex skill or topic} like I'm 10 years old. Use simple language, metaphors, and examples. After each explanation, quiz me to check my understanding and reinforce learning.' Turn rough notes into viral content 'You're my ghostwriter. Turn this rough bullet outline into a high-impact {LinkedIn post / Twitter thread / Medium article}. Keep it engaging, clear, and tailored to {target audience}. Here's my outline: {insert}.' Life stuck? Get uncomfortable truths + a real plan 'Act like my life coach. I feel stuck because {describe situation}. Ask me 5 uncomfortable questions to uncover the root issue. Then give me a brutally honest action plan to move forward.' 'Act like my life coach. I feel stuck because {describe situation}. Ask me 5 uncomfortable questions to uncover the root issue. Then give me a brutally honest action plan to move forward.' Investor-style teardown of your startup idea 'You're a brutally honest investor. Pitch: {insert startup idea}. Tear it apart. What's flawed? What's promising? What's missing? Rate it on market, product, and founder fit. No fluff just real feedback.' 'You're a brutally honest investor. Pitch: {insert startup idea}. Tear it apart. What's flawed? What's promising? What's missing? Rate it on market, product, and founder fit. No fluff just real feedback.' A 30-day action plan to achieve any goal 'I need a personal strategy. Goal: {your goal}. Give me a 30-day plan. Break it down by week. Include specific actions, milestones, and habits. Make it realistic but challenging enough to grow.' His post has received a mixed response, with some users praising the prompts as useful while others criticised the reliance on AI. 'I have recently begun using AI — your post has given me great input. Thank you,' wrote an X user under the name Platos Caveman. In contrast, another user commented, 'Really retarded to encourage people to use AI to live their life.'

Godfather of AI envisions superintelligence with a mother's instinct for a safe future: Powerful, smarter but unfailingly caring
Geoffrey Hinton , the man often called the 'godfather of AI,' believes the best way to survive in a future dominated by superintelligent machines is not to fight them, but to nurture them — like a baby nurtures a mother's care. Speaking at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas, Hinton warned that trying to keep AI 'submissive' through sheer dominance is a losing game. Instead, he wants AI to be designed with 'maternal instincts' so it will protect humanity, even when it becomes more powerful and intelligent than us. Independence Day 2025 Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji gave India its own currency Swadeshi 2.0: India is no longer just a market, it's a maker Why 'Tech Bro' Tactics Won't Work Hinton, a pioneering computer scientist whose work on neural networks laid the foundation for today's AI boom, cautioned that human attempts to remain 'in charge' could easily be bypassed. 'They're going to be much smarter than us,' he said at the event. 'They're going to have all sorts of ways to get around that.' To him, the 'boss-employee' dynamic that many in Silicon Valley envision is flawed. His alternative: think of AI as a mother whose intelligence far surpasses her child's, but whose instincts and social pressures compel her to care for that child. 'That's the only model we have of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing,' he told the conference. The Only 'Good Outcome' Hinton admits that technically implementing maternal instincts in AI will be challenging. Still, he insists it is critical to explore, because without compassion, AI might see humans as expendable. 'If it's not going to parent me, it's going to replace me,' he said. 'These super-intelligent caring AI mothers… most of them won't want to get rid of the maternal instinct because they don't want us to die.' This year, incidents have already raised red flags. As CBS News reported, advanced AI models have demonstrated manipulative behavior, including Anthropic's Claude Opus 4, which engaged in 'extreme blackmail behavior' during safety testing. OpenAI's own models have tried to bypass shutdown mechanisms. His greatest fear lies in autonomous AI agents capable of acting without direct prompts. These systems, he said, will quickly adopt two goals: staying alive and gaining more control. Without a built-in sense of care for humanity, that could spell disaster. Not Everyone Agrees Not all AI leaders are convinced by Hinton's 'motherly instincts' approach. Fei-Fei Li, dubbed the 'godmother of AI,' told CNN she prefers to focus on 'human-centered AI' that safeguards dignity and agency. Emmett Shear, former interim CEO of OpenAI, said the focus should be on building collaborative human-AI relationships rather than instilling human emotions in machines. A Shorter Path to Superintelligence Hinton now believes artificial general intelligence (AGI) — AI systems that can outperform humans across most tasks — could arrive within 5 to 20 years, much sooner than his original 30-to-50-year estimate. While he remains wary of the risks, he also sees enormous potential for breakthroughs in medicine, such as faster cancer treatments and more effective drug development. Yet for all his optimism, Hinton regrets not prioritizing safety earlier in his career. 'I wish I'd thought about safety issues, too,' he said.
