PENAMPANG, July 13 (Bernama) -- The drafting of the National Consumer Policy (DPN) 2.0 is in its final phase and is expected to be finalised by year-end, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said DPN 2.0 would serve as the main reference for all stakeholders in implementing consumer-related initiatives and programmes nationwide from 2026 to 2030. Armizan said the policy would also outline the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders, including those indirectly involved with consumer affairs. 'The relationship between these various stakeholders is crucial to ensuring effective implementation of consumer protection laws and the dissemination of accurate, comprehensive information to help create empowered Malaysian consumers,' he said in his speech at the 2025 Consumerism Festival here today. Themed 'Semarak Konsumerisme', the three-day festival, which concluded today, marked the highlight of the 2025 National Consumer Day celebration and drew participation from school and university students nationwide. The programme was organised as a key platform to gather recommendations and views on DPN 2.0, which will serve as part of the input in finalising the formulation of the consumer policy. Armizan said DPN 2.0 was also designed to enhance preparedness in addressing current challenges within the consumer ecosystem, including weaknesses in regulatory and enforcement aspects, as well as low consumer literacy levels that were prone to exploitation. He said other challenges included the use of products that did not comply with safety standards or were not environmentally friendly, fraudulent transactions, and the misuse of digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence. According to him, DPN 2.0 would also place emphasis on cost of living issues through an inclusive and responsive approach, including the implementation of the Payung Rahmah MADANI Programme, broader use of the Ihsan MADANI Portal as a reference for price and essential goods information, and the application of cost of living indicators to guide consumer spending.

Immigration to investigate marriages of locals and foreigners with big age gaps
KOTA BARU: The Immigration Department will investigate all marriages between locals and foreigners, particularly those with significant age gaps. This is to determine if there were ulterior motives behind the marriages and if they were orchestrated by syndicates. Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said that there have been cases of Malaysian women aged 65 marrying foreign men in their 20s, raising suspicions. "If they marry legally and follow proper laws and procedures, it's not an offence. But what we are concerned about is if the marriage is being used for other purposes, what we call a 'marriage of convenience'. "When you have a 25-year-old foreign man marrying a 60- or 70-year-old woman, there's a significant age gap. "We will conduct thorough investigations to verify whether the marriage is genuine or if it was done for specific benefits," he told reporters at the 2025 Immigration Director-General's Cup Shooting Championship at the Kelantan Shooting Association's range. Zakaria said the department would not approve immigration facilities, such as a spouse visa for foreigners, if investigations revealed the marriage was not legitimate. He added that such marriages were not a new issue but had long existed, and while not illegal if done properly, they posed a social problem. "We need to raise public awareness. If you have elderly family members without anyone to care for them, pay attention so they don't fall victim to syndicates," he said. Recently, the Immigration Department busted a syndicate believed to be offering immigration-related services, including applications under the "foreign spouse of Malaysian citizen" category and marriage registration services via the National Registration Department (NRD) for marriages between Malaysians and foreigners. Zakaria had said the syndicate appeared to target elderly individuals who were often neglected or received no financial support from their families. In most cases, he said, these senior citizens were not required to do anything except agree to the marriage. "In return, they receive monthly allowances amounting to thousands of ringgit, as these foreigners are only interested in securing legal status," he said.

Ferry Tragedy: Only One Malaysian Confirmed Dead So Far
BANTING, July 13 (Bernama) -- Only one Malaysian has been confirmed dead so far in the ferry sinking tragedy in the Bali Strait late on July 2. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said there have been no new casualties involving citizens so far, and the search and rescue efforts are still ongoing. "I have been informed that a Malaysian was involved (killed) and has already been laid to rest. "So far, there are no new victims involving Malaysians, but search efforts are ongoing," he said to reporters after officiating the UMNO Kuala Langat Division Delegates' Meeting at the Dewan Sri Jugra here today. Previously, Mohamad, who is also the UMNO deputy president, officiated the meeting attended by 460 representatives from 90 branches. Meanwhile, Mohamad said any relevant department can assist the family. The media reported that the remains of Malaysian national Fauzey Awang, 55, who perished in the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry tragedy, were laid to rest in East Java on Friday night, fulfilling his last wish to be laid to rest near his teacher's grave and close to his wife in Indonesia. Although originally from Terengganu, Fauzey was reported to have frequently travelled back and forth to Indonesia every three months to meet his wife. The ferry he was on carried 65 passengers and 22 vehicles before it sank in the Bali Strait on the night of July 2, about 30 minutes after departing from Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi, in East Java to Bali.
