Kullu again: Heavy rain triggers landslide in Sainj valley, villagers evacuated

Shimla: With incessant rain leading to a landslide on a hill behind Duridhar village in Sainj valley of Kullu district on Saturday, the district administration evacuated 20 inhabitants of 11 houses in the village to a transit camp.
Kullu deputy commissioner Torul S Raveesh said that the administration is carrying out the technical assessment of the area affected by the landslide. She added that the affected villagers were shifted to a transit camp at the nearby public works department's rest house. As many as 213 roads, including two national highways, were closed for vehicular traffic on Saturday evening in Himachal Pradesh. The two blocked national highways include NH-70 Mandi-Kotali road and NH-305 Luhri-Nither road, which were blocked due to landslides.
Besides this, a total of 31 power distribution transformers and 141 water supply schemes were also affected across the state on Saturday evening, as per the state emergency operation centre (SEOC).
As many as 82 people in the hill state lost their lives, and 34 still remain missing from June 20 to July 26 because of monsoon-related incidents. The Himalayan state witnessed as many as 25 cloudbursts, 42 flash floods, and 32 landslides during this monsoon period, which resulted in Rs 1,438 crore accumulated loss.

Till Saturday evening, the water level of all the 25 dams across the state was within the permissible operational limits, as per the SEOC. The weather department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, and Kullu districts on July 29. On July 27 and 28, the meteorological department predicted heavy rain at isolated places, mainly in Sirmaur, Kangra, and Una districts.
Mandi, Shimla, and Hamirpur districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places on July 28.
Isolated places in Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, and Sirmaur districts received light rainfall on Saturday. Pakistan earthquake: 5.4 magnitude tremor jolts several areas; no damage reported
Representative Image (ANI image) A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck several parts of Pakistan early Saturday morning, causing panic among residents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and the capital Islamabad, as reported by ARY News. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) reported that the earthquake occurred at 2.04 am PST at a depth of 102 kilometers. Its epicentre was located in the Hindukush mountain region in Afghanistan. Tremors were also felt across various regions in Afghanistan and Tajikistan, the NSMC confirmed. In Pakistan, the tremors were reported in multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Dir, Mardan, Mohmand, Shangla, Hangu, Swabi, Haripur, and Abbottabad. New Delhi: A cloudy sky with rain is likely in the national capital on Sunday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said while predicting light rain or drizzle. Delhi on Saturday recorded a maximum temperature of 33.7 degrees Celsius, 1.1 degrees below the season's average, the IMD said. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.7 degrees Celsius, 1.4 notches below the season's average. The relative humidity was recorded at 90 per cent at 5.30 pm on Saturday. Delhi's air quality was recorded in the "satisfactory" category at 6 pm on Saturday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 84, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor' and 401 and 500 'severe'.
