PFF names third-year defender most underrated Steeler ahead of 2025 season
T.J. Watt must be proud — as his protege and fellow Wisconsin Badger Nick Herbig was just named the most underrated Steeler by Pro Football Focus.
PFF highlighted that while Herbig gets far less opportunity to rush the passer than Watt, he makes the most of what he's given — as evident in Week 8 last season against the Chargers, when Herbig recorded two sacks and a forced fumble on just eight pass-rush snaps.
Here is how Pro Football Focus' Jonathon Macri defended Herbig's selection as the most underrated Steelers player ahead of the 2025 season:
"Since 2022, Herbig owns a 91.4 PFF pass-rush grade, which ranks seventh among all edge defenders with at least 250 pass-rush snaps. With Watt and Highsmith occasionally missing time due to injury, having a high-end pass rusher like Herbig waiting in the wings is a very underrated and valuable option that not many teams have the luxury of."
At best, Herbig will serve as the Steelers' saving grace if they fail to extend Watt beyond the 2025 season — and at worst, he's one of the league's best backup edge defenders.

New Jets CB Brandon Stephens making quick impression at training camp

The New York Jets entered the offseason searching for a cornerback to play opposite Sauce Gardner. New GM Darren Mougey signed Brandon Stephens to a three-year contract worth $36 million. Through two practices, Stephens has made a quick impression at Florham Park. Head coach Aaron Glenn has been impressed. "I thought he had a really good day and I was proud of him," Glenn said after practice. "He really stood out as far as coverage today. I'm excited about [the] player." Stephens reciprocated the feeling, crediting Glenn for being one of the reasons he signed with the Jets in free agency. "That's one of the reasons I came here, to learn from guys like AG [Aaron Glenn]," Stephens said. "Guys who have been in my shoes, [coaches] who have succeeded in this league. It's been great." Stephens has been sticky in coverage through two practices with a few pass breakups. Stephens struggled with the Baltimore Ravens last season, allowing 65 receptions and a passer rating allowed of 107.4, per Pro Football Focus. He's attempting to enjoy a bounce-back season under Coach Glenn, a defensive-minded leader. Stephens' form at training camp is worth monitoring after he was one of the Jets' biggest offseason acquisitions. Finding an appropriate running mate for Gardner has been a previous issue. Stephens is off to a good start.

Cam Coleman, Jackson Arnold earn spots on Maxwell Award watch list

Jackson Arnold and Cam Coleman are in the early running to win a national award. Quarterback Jackson Arnold and wide receiver Cam Coleman are expected to be colossal playmakers for the Auburn Tigers in 2025. The hype surrounding the duo is real as one postseason award has included them on its preseason watch list. The Maxwell Award, given annually to the most outstanding player in college football, released its preseason watch list this week, which includes Arnold and Coleman. Auburn's representation joins a long list of SEC players that have earned early consideration for the award, including Florida QB DJ Lagway, Georgia RB Nate Frazier, and Texas A&M RB Le'Veon Moss. Coleman returns to Auburn after a solid freshman campaign in 2024. The Phenix City, Alabama native caught 37 passes for 598 yards last season, with eight touchdowns. His production skyrocketed later in Auburn's schedule as he logged 22 catches for 306 yards and six touchdowns over Auburn's final three games. According to Pro Football Focus data, Coleman dropped just three passes last season and hauled in 68.5% of passes thrown his way. Arnold is the new kid on the block for the Tigers' offense, transferring to the Plains from Oklahoma. He is set to take over the starting quarterback role following the departure of Payton Thorne, who held the position for the last two seasons. Arnold won the Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022 and saw time as a starter for the Sooners last season. However, Arnold is looking for a fresh start with Auburn, where he will have a stellar wide receiver unit to pass to and an experienced offensive line blocking for him. As Hurricanes prepare for 2025 season, look for offensive line to ‘set the tone'

Francis Mauigoa understands what's expected of him and the rest of the Miami Hurricanes' offensive line. They're the veterans of this team. They're the most established unit on a team that is looking to take yet another step forward this season. 'The O-line, we like to set the tone for the whole team,' Mauigoa said last week at the Atlantic Coast Conference's Football Kickoff in Charlotte, North Carolina. 'We like to set the standard. [Offensive line] coach [Alex] Mirabal always pounds on us every day to set the standard for the team, and we're the type of guys that go out there and try to dominate everybody.' That's the standard that has to be set if Miami wants to build on its 10-win season in 2024, the first time UM has won double-digit games since 2017. Coach Mario Cristobal always harps that the game begins in the trenches, and the Hurricanes have done their part through recruiting and development to make sure that their offensive line is among the best in the country. That should be the case this season. In addition to Mauigoa at right tackle, the Hurricanes return three other starters from last season in left tackle Markel Bell (who filled in early when Jalen Rivers was hurt and continued getting playing time when Rivers returned), left guard Matt McCoy and right guard Anez Cooper. Miami also added veteran center James Brockermeyer through the transfer portal. Combined, the Hurricanes' projected starting offensive line has a combined 85 starts. 'Any time you have an offensive line that can perform at a high level, you're going to have a chance to win a lot of games,' Cristobal said, 'and we feel like we are going to be able to field an offensive line that could play eight to 10 guys, and maybe even more, of winning football. We're going to find out during camp. We cross train everybody so everybody's getting reps on the other side as well. We have multiple guys taking reps at center, but we're big and we're physical. Our strength room numbers have been off the charts. It's a hungry, driven group and they know that we are led by the trenches.' And inside that group, Mauigoa is expected to lead the charge individually. The right tackle has been named a preseason All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation (first team), Athlon (first team), Lindy's Sports (second team) and Phil Steele (third team). According to Pro Football Focus, Mauigoa was the only tackle at the Football Bowl Subdivision level last season with two or fewer knockdowns allowed on 500-plus pass-blocking snaps. He made all-around strides in his game, allowing just one sack last year compared to five as a freshman and allowing fewer quarterback pressures (19 in 2024 compared to 23 in 2023). Mauigoa also committed just five penalties in 2024 compared to nine his freshman season. 'We strive to get better every year,' Mauigoa said. 'Every offseason, we work to get better at something. We practice hard every time that we get a chance to. We're just trying to be the best that we can be. The stats don't even matter to us. It's being able to be out there and being able to be the best you can be, not only as a player but as a character as well.'
