Shikhar Dhawan Opts Out Of India vs Pakistan Clash In WCL 2025, Cites Patriotism Over Sport
Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Dhawan wrote:
'Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota.'

The heartfelt message received widespread support from fans, fellow players, and public figures. The 38-year-old's email had conveyed his firm stand, explaining that he would not take part in a match that involved the Pakistan team due to the emotional and political atmosphere prevailing in the country following recent terror attacks, including the tragic Pahalgam incident in Jammu & Kashmir.
Not the Only One Standing Down
Dhawan's decision wasn't isolated. Several other Indian cricket legends, including Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, and Irfan Pathan, also reportedly chose not to participate in the controversial fixture. The collective move sent a powerful message that transcended sport, emphasising national sentiment over entertainment.
Adding to the pressure, popular travel and event partner EaseMyTrip issued a public statement withdrawing sponsorship from any match that involved Pakistan. The company cited their stance as 'patriotic,' reinforcing that 'national sentiment always comes first.'
WCL Responds: Match Cancelled
In light of the growing dissent, the WCL 2025 organisers decided to call off the India vs Pakistan match, originally scheduled as a high-profile fixture. A formal apology was released:
"We deeply regret any hurt caused to Indian sentiments. We never intended to create distress or controversy. WCL is about celebrating the legends of cricket, and we respect the choices of every player."
The statement confirmed that the rest of the tournament will proceed as scheduled, minus the marquee India vs Pakistan face-off.
A Broader Message
Dhawan's stance has sparked a nationwide conversation, blending patriotism with sports diplomacy. In a time where national pride is often at crossroads with international engagements, his actions have been seen as a stand for principles over popularity.

WATCH: AB de Villiers blasts India Champions with blistering 61 in 30 balls, pulls off stunning tag-team catch in WCL 2025
South Africa legend AB de Villiers magically turned back the clock as he deflated the India Champions during the World Championship of Legends (WCL) match in Northampton on Tuesday. The 41-year-old de Villiers, returning to a franchise T20 league for the first time in four years since his IPL 2021 appearance for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, conjured up a special knock and even impressed with his supreme presence on the field as South Africa Champions thumped India by 88 runs. After being asked to bat, de Villiers walked in at No. 4 in the ninth over. The South Africa Champions skipper then showed his typical 360-degree flair as he constricted the India veteran bowlers with an array of shots. de Villiers, who played 340 professional T20s during his playing career and racked up 9400 runs, struck at nearly 200 as he blasted 61 off only 30 balls to power South Africa Champions to 206 for six in 20 overs. The Indians were no match before de Villiers and Co. as they were reduced to only 111 for nine in 18.2 overs. The ball lobbed up and was pouched firmly by Erwee to complete the fantastic relay-catch. After boycotting their opening fixture against Pakistan Champions, last year's winners India got off to a poor start. After skipper Yuvraj Singh was replaced by Shikhar Dhawan as an impact player in India's chase, the team slipped to 28 for four within the Powerplay. Only all-rounder Stuart Binny (37 not out) crossed 20 with the bat as South Africa Champions, led by an astute de Villiers, completed the dominant win.

IND vs ENG: Navjot Singh Sidhu predicts India's XI for crucial Manchester Test; calls Mohammed Siraj 'unsung hero'

'Karun Nair is a promising cricketer, but his technical weakness has been exposed,' said Sidhu. 'When you think of winning, I ask — what is the fault of Sai Sudharsan?' Did Sai Sudharsan confirm his India Playing XI spot on eve of the match? He hailed Sudharsan's recent domestic and IPL form, saying, 'You have one of the most promising players in India. He's technically sound — low gravity, hand-eye coordination, and head over toe. Why shouldn't he be in the team?' Sidhu's predicted India XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Anshul Kamboj. World University Games fallout: Ministry plans to revamp AIU, SGFI
Representatonal Image New Delhi: The govt is considering disbanding the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and School Games Federation of India (SGFI) over alleged irregularities in their functioning and administrative mismanagement, sources told TOI on Tuesday. With the govt set to introduce the 'National Sports Governance Bill 2025' in Parliament on Wednesday, there was a growing demand in the sports ministry's corridors to establish two new national federations with a professional setup for school and university games, replacing both administratively-marred incumbent sports bodies. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'Yes, there's a thought to disband both AIU and SGFI and put two new sports federations in place after holding proper elections and having a right set of people. The ministry has been receiving a lot of complaints from athletes on how AIU and SGFI function. It will take some time, but with a new sports bill around, which will soon become an Act, the time has come to bring more accountability into the functioning of these two bodies,' a ministry official said. 'Both AIU and SGFI are key to India's sporting progress, as they nurture and identify talent at the grassroots level. They play an important role in shaping the country's sports future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo Sadly, both have failed in their duties,' the source added. The development has come at a time when six Indian badminton players were barred from the World University Games (WUG) in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, over an alleged administrative lapse. Originally, a total of 12 players were selected and sent to represent India, but only six were allowed to compete as officials failed to submit all names correctly during the managers' meeting on July 16. Sources alleged that the players who topped the trials were left out of the badminton team despite being part of the squad. The AIU is the nodal body for university level sports in the country. Similarly, India couldn't field an entry in the women's 10,000m and 400m as long-distance runner Seema along with two others and sprinter Devyaniba Zala's names were missing from the start list due to an official error.
