This latest agreement follows SpiceJet's announcement last month of inducting five Boeing 737s on damp lease from another operator, taking the total number of new fleet additions to 10. The airline is also in advanced discussions to lease more aircraft ahead of the winter 2025 schedule.
Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer, SpiceJet, said, 'SpiceJet is fully geared to meet the surge in travel demand for the upcoming winter and early summer seasons. With the induction of these additional Boeing 737s, we are ensuring that our passengers have more choices, greater connectivity, and a reliable, on-time travel experience.'

Mayawati urges govt to focus on public welfare and economic self-reliance on I-Day
Lucknow, Aug 15 (UNI) On the country's 79th Independence Day, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, while extending greetings to Indians across the globe, emphasized that true national interest lay in public welfare, and that the government should act with seriousness to address the economic challenges facing the country. Referring to US policies under President Donald Trump, particularly the enforcement of aggressive trade tariffs, Mayawati said such global economic moves have repercussions for India. To shield the country's economy and citizens against such impacts, she urged the government to set aside mere slogans, narrow political agendas, and populist declarations, and instead adopt concrete policy actions with unity and focus. Mayawati stated the Centre and state governments must reassure the nation's 1.4 billion citizens, especially the trading community, that serious, long-term policy shifts are being made to stabilize and protect the Indian economy. She said this is the message the country expects on Independence Day, and it will remain relevant in the future as well. Despite adverse policies, she praised India's resilient economy, crediting its strength to the tireless efforts of the country's poor, labourers, farmers, small traders, and other working-class citizens. However, she warned that these very sections of society are suffering due to government policies that favour large corporations and wealthy industrialists, especially in the face of poverty, unemployment, and daily life stresses. Mayawati said true national development could occur when the country was free from all forms of disorder, including communal, caste-based, and linguistic tensions and violence. She emphasized that it is the duty of both Central and state governments to maintain social harmony and prevent rising political friction at different levels of governance. UNI PRI PRS

In charts: Tracking the 30-year journey of a digital India
On 15 August 1995, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) launched India's first public internet service. Before this, the internet was available only for limited use by educational and government institutions. Since the launch, the tech wonder has transformed communication, commerce, finance, education, and entertainment, becoming an inseparable part of daily life for millions of Indians. As we complete three decades since this milestone, here's a look at the journey—and where India stands today. Signal revolution Mobile technology has played a pivotal role in making the internet accessible to the remotest corners. From 2G's voice calls and SMS to 3G's mobile internet and apps, 4G's video and cloud services, and now 5G in the era of artificial intelligence, the evolution has been rapid. It has enabled financial inclusion, remote education, telemedicine, micro-entrepreneurship, real-time market information, and faster disaster response. Expanding access Internet adoption has surged, crossing a 50% penetration rate three years ago. The country is also catching up with global levels, but remains behind emerging market peers like China. Indians already consume more mobile data than others, and this is set to rise significantly. A basic mobile voice and data package costs around 1% of per capita income, making India one of the cheapest places to go online. Gaps in the market In India, young people use the internet widely, but many may also be lost with making full use of it. The gender gap on access and digital skills is stark. Internet access in rural areas is also inadequate. Meanwhile, India also faces the challenge of having an internet duopoly.
