CapeNature welcomes 475 new participants into Expanded Public Works Programme

Image: CapeNature CapeNature has proudly welcomed 475 enthusiastic new participants into its three-year Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), reaffirming its commitment to skills development, environmental conservation, and community upliftment across the Western Cape. This significant intake was celebrated at Kogelberg Nature Reserve on Mandela Day, 18 July, a date that serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle against poverty and inequality. The event not only marked the beginning of new opportunities for participants but also highlighted the vital role of meaningful employment in fostering social change. The 2023 Mandela Day theme, 'It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,' resonates deeply with CapeNature's goals for the EPWP. The programme aims to address both environmental challenges and socio-economic issues faced by communities throughout the province. By providing a comprehensive platform for training, mentorship, and hands-on experience, CapeNature is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of participants and their communities. Participants in the EPWP will receive critical training in areas such as invasive species management, wildfire response, biodiversity monitoring, and eco-tourism across various provincial nature reserves. The programme prioritises the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities, aligning with national targets to support vulnerable groups. Between 2022 and 2025, the programme is set to employ a total of 1,366 participants, offering three-year contracts instead of just one, thereby providing greater job security and opportunities for growth. MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, emphasised the transformative power of the EPWP during the welcoming event. 'During this time, there will be opportunities for training, and you will have the chance to explore your particular interests in conservation, tourism, or working with our many neighbours and stakeholder communities,' he said. Bredell highlighted past successes where participants have made significant advancements in personal development, including securing permanent employment as a direct result of their commitment to the programme. The inspiring stories of past participants illustrate the programme's potential. Thabiso Mokoena, who joined the EPWP after completing his undergraduate diploma, started as an Environmental Education Officer and is now a successful SMME Development Specialist. He attributes his career progression to the valuable skills and mentorship he received through the programme. As CapeNature continues to cultivate a skilled workforce, it remains dedicated to empowering individuals and fostering sustainable development in the Western Cape. This initiative not only invests in people but also in the preservation of nature, proving that meaningful employment can yield profound societal benefits.

Mandela Day brings lasting impact to Eldorado Park special needs centre

In honour of Nelson Mandela Day, Jicama 89, an NPO dedicated to resource development for special needs schools, hosted an impactful day of giving at the Harvey Cohen Centre (HCC) for Learners with Special Educational Needs in Ext 6, Eldorado Park. Jicama 89 partnered with International Gaming Technology and Lancet Laboratories to give the centre a fresh look. The day was filled with activities aimed at uplifting learners, ranging from painting the school's interiors to providing warm meals. ALSO READ: Local netball club celebrates Mandela day in style The initiative was led by Kaylin Everton, director of operations for Jicama 89, who emphasised that supporting schools like HCC is not just a once-off event but part of the organisation's ongoing commitment. 'This is not something that just happens on Mandela Day. For us, it is a continuous effort. HCC is one of our beneficiary schools, and it's our responsibility to show up for them,' said Everton. Jicama 89 supports three institutions, including Sibonile School for the Blind, Isizwe Sechaba Special School and HCC, sourcing donations that range from food and chemicals to infrastructure repairs and mobility aids. While Mandela Day brought public focus to the organisation's work, Everton stressed that their goal goes far beyond symbolic acts. ALSO READ: Foundation marks Mandela Day by championing health matters 'We aim to integrate these children into society and ensure they have the same opportunities as any other child. We do not see disabilities, we see ability, potential, and value,' she added. The impact of the partnership was visible at the HCC Centre. From fresh paint donated by Universal Paints to roofing and ceiling repairs contributed by IGT, the collaborative effort turned the day into something meaningful. 'IGT saw the leaking roof and did not hesitate; they fixed it and replaced the damaged ceiling boards. This means our kids will now be safer and warmer, especially in winter,' said Everton. The principal, Cheryl Scott, cited that the timing was perfect as the school had challenges with a leaking roof at the hostels. 'We are grateful for the support as we celebrate a great man. I want to brag because Madiba was on these grounds in April 1999, and we continue to commemorate him. We are blessed by the companies that made a difference.'She said the school is facing financial challenges due to funding cuts. Church leads Mandela Day clean-up at taxi rank

The Mandela Day spirit was invoked on Friday when members of Mondlo Methodist Church conducted a clean-up campaign at the local taxi rank near SuperSpar. Under the 2025 Mandela Day theme, 'It is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequality,' the Mondlo community came together to express heartfelt gratitude to local businesses for their ongoing support. The campaign highlighted the important role played by Mondlo Mall, SuperSpar, and the nearby taxi rank, all of which have remained strong pillars of community support over the years. Congregants chose the taxi rank as it is a high-traffic area with many shops, but it still experiences incidents of illegal dumping. The event was opened by a short prayer led by Mrs Mzila, Super Spar Fresh Produce Manager, who expressed her thanks for the campaign, noting that dumping turns into an 'excellent breeding ground for germs that cause numerous illnesses.' Reverend Skhakhane, Spar's assistant manager, gave a brief history of the business, adding that Spar's is interested in the welfare of the community it serves and that they aim to make a positive contribution wherever possible.' The store is already assisting needy and bereaved families and provides employment opportunities to local communities. Rank Manager, Mr Khumalo, said he was 'very happy and humbled to see the church assisting in keeping the rank clean, safer and more dignified for the community'. 'This clean-up campaign will create awareness among all community members to dispose of waste appropriately.' The young people from the church collected all the litter and removed the illegal dumping site. All waste was placed at a designated pickup point for easy collection, while Skhakhane thanked everyone for a successful event and requested a prayer chain to ensure that the community is kept safe and healthy.
