How do Brentford conduct such impressive recruitment?

BBC News12-03-2025
Brentford technical director Lee Dykes spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about the Bees' recruitment strategy: "We have a data coverage of over 85,000 players - that is the first stage. You filter through in stages and the number is coming down. At the end of the process, you eventually arrive at between 60 and 70 players that are the best five or six in each of the positions."Once we have got the shortlist in place, we can start to do some serious due diligence on the particular names."The Premier League is a place where a lot of young players want to come and play. The work we've done with players like David Raya, Bryan Mbeumo - those stories carry themselves around the industry."Dykes says he is open to the use of AI in future recruitment, adding: "It's definitely in the next phase - we are exploring that."I think AI will enhance the data search - we just don't know how yet."This week 5 Live Breakfast are behind the scenes with Brentford all week, so keep checking back on this Brentford page for further interviews.

Brentford make Bryan Mbeumo transfer demand as Man Utd set for £6m boost

Plenty of movement is expected at Manchester United this summer, with the Red Devils hoping to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo and Jadon Sancho keen on a move to Juventus Manchester United are set for a major reset this summer as they look to bounce back from their worst ever Premier League campaign. The Red Devils finished 15th last season and were also beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in the Europa League final. Manager Ruben Amorim has been backed to turn things around and United have already strengthened their squad with the £62.5million addition of Matheus Cunha, while teenage full-back Diego Leon has also joined. ‌ Plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected before the transfer window slams shut, with the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Ollie Watkins both being targeted. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia are all expected to complete permanent exits. ‌ Here, Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer news and rumours from in and around Old Trafford... Brentford hold firm According to a report from the Standard, Brentford have refused to lower their £63m asking price for Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo is keen on a move to Manchester United this summer, but Brentford have already rejected two bids for the forward. United's last bid was worth an initial £55m plus £7.5m in add-ons and Brentford are said to want more than the £62.5m the Red Devils paid Wolves for Matheus Cunha. "He had a fantastic season," Brentford's director of football Phil Giles recently said when asked about Mbeumo's future. "We expected big interest in him; we have had big interest in him. He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career. He is well within his rights to do that. It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay." Sancho asking price Manchester United are reportedly demanding £25m for Jadon Sancho this summer, with the winger expected to complete a permanent exit after spending last season on loan at Chelsea. ‌ The Blues paid a £5m penalty fee to avoid signing Sancho permanently after he produced just eight goal contributions in 31 appearances in the Premier League. According to Corriere dello Sport, Juventus are ready to offer Sancho a fresh start. And the report states that United want around £25m to sell the forward, who is said to be keen on a move to Italy. ‌ £6m boost Newcastle have made an improved £55m bid for former Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga, according to the Mail. Elanga joined Nottingham Forest from United in 2023 and the report claims that the Red Devils will be owed around £15 per cent of the profits made if the winger is sold. Should Forest accept Newcastle's bid, United will receive £6m. Elanga enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, producing 17 goal contributions in 38 Premier League appearances for Forest as they finished seventh and qualified for Europe for the first time in almost 30 years. Arsenal aim to complete two signings by NEXT WEEK as summer transfer spree hots up

ARSENAL hope to sign Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard in time for their pre-season training camp in Spain next week. The Gunners' only summer signing so far saw them activate Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga's £5million release clause to make him back-up for No 1 David Raya. 2 2 But Zubimendi's £51m arrival from Real Sociedad is on the verge of being announced. And Brentford man Norgaard will not be far behind after having a medical ahead of a £10m plus add-ons switch. If all goes smoothly, the midfield duo should be on the plane for warm-weather training in Spain ahead of a pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong from July 19. Defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has had his contract mutually terminated due to his poor injury record, despite having a year left on his Emirates deal. The Japanese star, who featured for just SIX minutes last term, is recovering from a long-term knee issue that will keep him out for most of 2025. Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres has rejected two more offers with the Sporting CP striker still determined to join Arsenal this summer. The Sweden international remains in a heated stand-off with his club and is desperate to secure a summer transfer away with North London his preferred destination. Juventus were ready to offer the 26-year-old that opportunity next season but he also turned down a move to Turin with the Bianconeri since signing Jonathan David. While he has his heart set on Arsenal, the Premier League giants are also exploring a move for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko – possibly leaving Gyokeres in limbo if Mikel Arteta's side sign for the Slovenia international. Al-Hilal and Al-Qadisiyah have made approaches which have been rejected by the Sporting star. Arsenal Plot Big Double Transfer For Eberechi Eze and Hugo Ekitike! | Transfers Exposed Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 appearances to lead Sporting to a domestic double last season but his relationship with the club has turned toxic in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace have revealed that Eberechi Eze will not be sold for a price lower than £68m, report The Mirror. That is the value of the winger's release clause and Palace are unwilling to negotiate for less than that fee. Arsenal are favourites to sign Eze this summer but there is also interest from Tottenham too. Gunners have made contact in their bid to sign Chelsea star Noni Madueke.

New signing Hay 'couldn't wait' to join Pressley's Dundee

New Dundee forward Ashley Hay "couldn't wait" to sign for the club and link-up with Steven Pressley again after joining from 21, spent two years with the Bees and captained their 'B' side as well as being top-scorer, while working closely with Pressley in his role as head of individual player development."I am excited to be here and can't wait to meet all the boys," Hay told club media."I was with Steven at Brentford. He came to me and my agent, and proposed for me to come here. I heard about the project and couldn't wait to get down."We had a good chat, he explained what he wants from me, what he sees in me. I trust in him fully and can't wait to get started."
