80s music icon almost cancelled long-overdue Glastonbury debut over health fears
An 80s music icon has revealed his long-overdue Glastonbury debut almost didn't happen.
Gary Numan played an electrifying set on the Park Stage on Saturday night, even bringing out his daughters, Raven and Persia, for a tune each.
His name sat on the bill alongside some real music greats this year, as Sir Rod Stewart, Neil Young, Charli XCX, Olivia Rodrigo, and The 1975 all played major slots at Worthy Farm in 2025.
However, Numan, 67, was close to cancelling his gig over health fears.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain today as he reflected on the weekend, the singer told Susanna Reid and Ed Balls: 'It was amazing.
'I was very, very nervous during the day. Very nervous.
'I'm actually going deaf, so we had some warm-up shows, and I was struggling with those to hear things properly. We got that sorted out.'
'But at one point, I was thinking about cancelling it,' he confessed. 'Just [thinking] it's gonna be a nightmare, it's gonna be a disaster, you know? Because I can't hear properly.'
Thankfully, all was ironed out before the big show.
'The closer it got, the less nervous I became, strangely enough. By the time I actually did it, I was enjoying myself. It was good fun.'
Numan is widely considered a pioneer of electronic music, but despite a career spanning five decades, this year was his first time at Glasto, to the surprise of fans.
As he took to the stage and received a roaring reception, though, many watching at home believed he should've been given a bigger stage.
Taking to X, @little_missneat complained: 'Really polished set from Gary Numan at @glastonbury worthy of a later slot on a bigger stage so crowd could have been more lively. Still got it for sure, one of the highlights from this year.'
@johnventers1 echoed: 'Gary Numan should have been on a bigger stage.'
Hailing Numan as 'absolute class', @chunnb declared him a 'highlight of the weekend'.
'Gary Numan deserves a bigger stage this is epic', agreed @villanK7, while @TQQNarmy added that he should be 2027's headliner.
Numan – whose full name is Gary Anthony James Webb – entered the music industry as frontman of the new wave band Tubeway Army and released two albums with them.
In 1979, he released his own debut solo album, The Pleasure Principle, which topped the UK charts.
His commercial popularity peak came in the early 80s with hits such as Are Friends Electric? and Cars, both of which hit number one.
To this day, he has maintained a cult following, having sold over 10million records.
His last album was Intruder in 2021, which was his 19th. He toured the US and the UK with the record, and last year, he announced a string of shows in celebration of the 45th anniversary of his debut.
While Glasto '25 became a widely political affair, Numan, recognisable via his unique vocals and androgynous stage persona, has distanced himself from politics in recent years, at least publicly.
He was previously outspoken with his support for the Conservatives and Margaret Thatcher after she was elected but later admitted regret, calling it 'a noose around [his] neck'. More Trending
Numan went on to say he considers himself neither left nor right wing, having not supported either Tony Blair or David Cameron, explaining further: 'I'm not a socialist, I know that. I don't believe in sharing my money.'
It comes as investigations are underway into the BBC's broadcasting of Bob Vylan's set, which included leading the crowd in chants of 'Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)'.
Directly after this, Irish rap trio Kneecap, including member Liam O'Hanna, who appeared in court earlier this month on charges of a terror offence, took to the stage and led chants of 'Free Palestine'.
On Monday, Avon and Somerset Police said it had launched a probe into both performances after reviewing video footage and audio recordings, with a senior detective appointed to lead the investigation.

Calvin Harris and Vick Hope have shared the happy news of the birth of their first child. Despite the increasing popularity, some research has debunked the theory that it offers health benefits. I feel sorry for Rebecca Loos after Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins
It's been over 20 years since Rebecca Loos was thrust into the spotlight following her alleged affair with married footballer David Beckham. Yet her harsh ordeal on the new series of Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins sadly proves that the desire to vilify her is just as strong as ever. Despite turning her back on fame – relocating to Norway with her doctor husband Sven Christjar Skaiaa and becoming a yoga teacher – Rebecca claimed she was motivated to do the show because it's a 'once in a lifetime opportunity'; and to see if she could 'stick through it mentally'. However, the interrogation she endured from the instructors in Episode 1 focused harshly on her scandal, with barely a mention of her current life as a wife and mother of two. Loos remained remarkably calm throughout – 'If they had asked me about more issues that are fresher in my heart, like my youngest son's diagnosis with a kind of autism just a few months before I went on the show, then they might have broken me down, got the waterworks going,' Loos said in an interview – but the obsessive focus on her 20-year-old affair felt punishing. 'The only focus is ever on the f***ing Beckham situation,' Loos said to the cameras, visibly emotional. 'It felt unjust that my life was pretty hell and his career and his life just kept blossoming,' she continued; going on to remind the cameras: 'He was older than me, and he was my boss.' You may argue that Loos has put herself in the firing line, but her treatment is in stark contrast to that of her fellow team member, footballer Troy Deeney. Deeney was sentenced in 2012 for affray, after attacking a group of students near a nightclub, along with three other men. One student lay injured on the floor as he received blows to the head from Deeney and another man. Yet, the Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins instructors appeared sympathetic during Deeney's interrogation as he attributed his actions to grief over his father's illness. They also drew attention to his 'drive' as a sportsman and encouraged him to look at the show as an opportunity to feel proud without 'the outside noise'. Similarly, former rugby star Ben Foden was seemingly afforded a platform to portray himself as a victim when he appeared on the show in 2019, shortly after admitting to being unfaithful to his then-wife Una Healy with PR executive Becky Milne. Describing his life prior to the show as having been 'turned upside down both professionally and personally', he said it was 'nice' to have the opportunity to 'take myself away from that'. Why is it that a woman's moral character remains defined by her past, while men are so often granted space to evolve, rebrand, and be redeemed? Loos' appearance on the reality series comes less than two years after the Beckham scandal was rehashed during the footballer's four-part self-titled 2023 Netflix documentary. While David and wife Victoria never mentioned her by name during the series, there were hints; and Loos noted at the time that her Instagram follower count had risen and her photos were attacked with hateful comments that called her a 'groupie', a 'homewrecker' and accused her of 'skanky' behaviour. 'How disgusting', said one user. 'Liar', said a second. 'You KNEW he was married…enough said,' wrote a third. 'You just want attention. Get over it,' said yet another. It was all too reminiscent of the early noughties. When the story of Rebecca and David's alleged affair first broke in 2004, Rebecca's image seemed to be plastered across every front page and, within days, former 'friends' had sold stories about her. David was seemingly able to move on from the scandal unscathed. He denied the claims, put on a united front with Victoria and just weeks later, landed a £40million endorsement deal with Gillette. But Loos, who was just 26 at the time, went from private figure to punchline overnight. Whatever you feel about her claims, there's no doubt that it must be hard to sit back in silence while the world creates their own narrative for you. So she spoke out. She was reportedly paid £350,000 to talk to the News of the World, and was advised by celebrity agent Max Clifford, who she claimed had promised her 'ridiculous money' if she went into 'all the juicy details'. She appeared to want to capitalise on her newfound fame with lad mag shoots and reality TV stints – but what choice did she have? Her notoriety would have made it impossible to return to her previous role. Sadly, though, her venture into reality TV was yet another opportunity to drag her through the mud and humiliate her. Her appearance on Channel 5's The Farm in 2004 saw her asked to extract semen from a nine-month-old boar, which was meant to be used to impregnate pigs on the farm. In 2005, she appeared on Celebrity Love Island and sparked speculation she'd had sex with Calum Best. Even though she was single at the time,'So that's why she's called Loos', a headline read. A year later, she starred on The X Factor: Battle of the Stars and was paired with James Hewitt, who had previously claimed he had an affair with Princess Diana. Judge Sharon Osborne blasted the pair for singing Addicted to Love and advised Loos – who was only wearing a short dress with no lingerie issues – to 'try doing tomorrow's performance with your knickers on'. No matter what Loos did, she could never outrun her past with Beckham. More Trending And that statement seems to still be true 21 years on. In promotional photos for Celeb SAS: Who Dares Wins on her Instagram page, Loos opted to limit comments. An understandable decision, given the wave of online abuse she previously faced amidst the Beckham documentary. And in the trailer for the rest of the show, clips that show her being screamed at and punched while sparring – not to mention the overt Beckham focus during her interrogation – evoke memories of the harsh and often degrading experiences she faced at the hands of early noughties TV. Kaiser Chiefs were 'glad something terrible happened' to their Glastonbury set
The Kaiser Chiefs' Glastonbury 2025 performance was a highlight for many at Worthy Farm, but 'something terrible happened'. As the Ruby hitmakers opened the Pyramid Stage for day two of the festival (Saturday, June 27), complaints flooded social media. It turned out the BBC had no plans to air the set, which marked the iconic band's 20th anniversary. Lead singer Ricky Wilson saw the outcry but admitted it doesn't feel like a Kaiser Chiefs show when everything is going right. 'We're most comfortable when things are going wrong, even like when we were the Glastonbury and it was, like, my favourite show ever,' the 47-year-old musician shared. Speaking on Radio X with Dan O'Connell, Ricky continued: 'Best day. I loved it. The crowd turned up. There was like 100,000 people in the field. Amazing. 'Then they said it wasn't on iPlayer. And I was like, 'Well, that's really rubbish.' 'I'm glad something terrible happened, because it wouldn't be the Kaiser Chiefs if it all went to plan.' He added: 'The thing is, bands that everything goes really well, then just to suddenly disappear. But bands that go up and down have a need to fight back all the time. 'It's weird, because we're very happy being the underdogs.' Those underdogs were marking two decades since the release of their debut album, Employment, which was the fourth best-selling album that year. The record produced iconic hits like Oh My God, I Predict a Riot, and Everyday I Love You Less and Less. It was shortlisted — as Ricky said it 'came second' — for the Mercury Prize that year but the singer revealed he couldn't appreciate the success at the time. 'It was weird,' he shared. 'We knew it was going really well; you can't really compute it when you're so tired. 'And I think any new band who aren't feeling like on the verge of death with tiredness, you're not doing it properly!' While the set did appear on iPlayer later, fans were furious it wasn't aired live and were particularly vocal about it on X at the time. Ninety_88 questioned: 'How can you put Kaiser Chiefs on to open on a Saturday and not televise it?' More Trending 'BBC iPlayer stating they are live, when in actual fact it's 2 presenters talking and showing the acts from last night, when we have all tuned in to watch Kaiser Chiefs who are actually live on stage now!
