New Delhi, Former Chief Justice of India Jagdish Singh Khehar, dancer Shobana Chandrakumar , actor Anant Nag and Vice Chancellor of prestigious King George's Medical University Soniya Nityanand were among 68 eminent personalities conferred with the coveted Padma awards by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday. A total of 139 distinguished persons were named for the country's civilian awards -- Padma Vibhushan , Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri -- on the eve of the 76th Republic Day on January 25.The President gave awards to 68 chosen ones on Tuesday in the second civil investiture ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Union Home Minister Amit Shah , among others.During the first investiture ceremony on April 28, President Murmu had conferred Padma awards to 71 personalities.In the ceremony in Ganatantra Mandap in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, President Murmu conferred the country's second highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan to Justice (retd) Khehar for public affairs while the award for late Kathak dancer Kumudini Rajnikant Lakhia and late legendary folk singer Sharda Sinha were received by Lakhia's grandson and Sinha's son.The President also handed over nine Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, during the ceremony to noted personalities which included dancer and actor Shobana Chandrakumar, businessman Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, archaeologist Kailash Nath Dikshit, dancer Jatin Goswami, actor Anant Nag, and Sadhvi Ritambhara.The award for economist Bibek Debroy and former Maharashtra CM and Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi was received by Debroy's wife and Joshi's son.Leading immunologist and KGMU VC Nityanand, footballer Inivalappil Mani Vijayan, singer Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, actor Ashok Laxman Saraf, mask maker Reba Kanta Mahanta, and musician Ricky Gyan Kej were among the recipients for Padma Shri.Noted theatre artist and acting coach Barry John, folk musician and noted parai player Velu Aasan, businessman Sajjan Bhajanka, Dr Neerja Bhatla, scientist Ajay V Bhatt, writer Sant Ram Deswal, spiritual leader Acharya Jonas Mejetti, and Farooq Ahmad Mir were among the other Padma Shri awardees.The awards are given in various disciplines and fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civil service, among others.Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.Ever since the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014, it has started honouring the "unsung heroes" by honouring them with the Padma awards, thus transforming Padma awards into "People's Padma". This year, the Padma awards were given to 30 "unsung heroes".Instituted in 1954, these awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day every year.All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these awards.Concerted efforts are being made to identify talented persons whose excellence and achievements really deserve to be recognised from amongst women, weaker sections of the society, SCs & STs, divyang persons and who are doing selfless service to the society.

State govt directs revenue department to expedite land acquisition for Thiruvananthapuram airport runway expansion
Thiruvananthapuram: After months of delay, expansion of runway at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has gained fresh momentum, with the state govt directing officials to fast-track land acquisition and clear all related bottlenecks. At a high-level meeting chaired by chief principal secretary to the chief minister K M Abraham, the govt instructed the revenue department to expedite procedures for acquiring 22 acres of land needed for the development of the runway end safety area (RESA) — a critical aviation safety feature mandated by international standards. Originally scheduled for completion by Sept 2024, the RESA expansion project has been delayed due to administrative hurdles and land disputes. The latest govt intervention comes as a push to meet safety norms and accommodate the growing passenger traffic at the international airport. One of the major roadblocks to the expansion has been the 4.5 acres of land under BrahMos Aerospace Ltd, a sensitive defence installation. While the land is essential for the expansion, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Union ministry of defence and its transfer requires Centre's approval. The state govt is also working on identifying an alternative site for the Chackai fire and rescue station, which lies within the proposed expansion zone. Officials have also confirmed that portions of Chackai–Shanghumugham Road may need to be taken over for the project, however they reassured that the ITI at Chackai would remain unaffected. Aviation secretary K Biju told TOI that the expansion of the runway is a top priority for both operational safety and long-term development of the airport. "State govt is fully committed to completing the land acquisition process at the earliest. Coordination with the Union ministry of defence is also underway to resolve the BrahMos land issue," he said. The project, once completed, will improve safety margins for aircraft operations, particularly during emergency landings and in adverse weather conditions. It will also enable the airport to handle larger aircraft, enhancing its potential as a key aviation hub in southern India. Airport authorities and AAI officials have welcomed the govt's proactive stance, noting that RESA expansion was critical for retaining international operational certifications. Revenue and transport officials are expected to intensify measures to complete surveys, initiate compensation packages and begin formal land handovers in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the development of Terminal 2 (International) under Project Anantha is likely to be delayed due to pending environmental clearance from the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority.

Dhindsa, last of first-generation Akali politicians, dies at 89
Chandigarh: Senior Akali leader and former Union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa — the last of the party's first-generation politicians — passed away Wednesday evening at Fortis hospital due to prolonged illness. He was 89. Former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Sangrur, Dhindsa is survived by his wife, two daughters and son Parminder Singh Dhindsa, former finance minister of Punjab. A close family friend of Dhindsas said the veteran Akali leader was facing multiple health issues owing to his old age. "For the last two and a half months, his health had been deteriorating further. He was admitted to Fortis hospital Tuesday and passed away at around 5 pm today," said the close family friend. In a media bulletin, Fortis hospital Mohali said, "Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, former Union minister, was admitted to Fortis Hospital, Mohali, on May 27, 2025, in a critical condition. He was suffering from severe pneumonia and cardiac complications, compounded by age related health issues. He studied at Government Ranbir College in Sangrur, completing his Bachelor of Arts. It was here that he began his political journey as a student leader. Dhindsa was a four-time MLA, winning his first election from Dhanaula in 1972 as an independent. He later joined Akali Dal. He was subsequently elected as MLA from Sunam in 1977, from Sangrur in 1980 and again from Sunam in 1985. Dhindsa was Rajya Sabha MP from 1998 to 2004 and from April 2010 to April 2022. He was also elected to Lok Sabha from Sangrur in 2004. Dhindsa and his son Parminder were expelled by SAD in 2020 after they questioned the functioning of Sukhbir Singh Badal as party president, blaming the latter for party's debacle in 2017 Punjab elections . He floated a breakaway faction Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) which contested 2022 Punjab elections in a seat-sharing arrangement with SAD's former ally BJP and then Punjab Lok Congress floated by former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The SAD (Sanyukt) could not make any mark in the election. Dhindsa was back in SAD fold in March last year, only to be expelled in August last year for "anti-party" activities. Expressing grief over the demise of Dhindsa, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, while sharing his photo with Dhindsa when he returned to SAD fold in March last year in a post on X, wrote, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Sukhdev Singh Ji Dhindsa. Dhindsa Sahib served Punjab and the community for a long time as part of the Shiromani Akali Dal, and his contributions will always be remembered." Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences in a post on X: "The passing of Shri Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa Ji is a major loss to our nation. He was a towering statesman with great wisdom and an unwavering commitment to public service. He always had a grassroots level connect with Punjab, its people and culture." A family friend said Dhindsa will be cremated in Sangrur district on Friday.
