Nisschal Zaveri Brings Ghazal Back to Life with a Stirring Performance at Andaaz
Ghazal singer, producer and composer Nisschal Zaveri
The concert opened with Zaveri's original composition 'Kabhi Kaha Na Kisi Se' in Raag Miyan Malhar. Through a mix of classics and new compositions, he brought a fresh voice to the works of poets like Ghalib and Faiz.
A standout moment was the qawwali 'Kar Qubool', composed by Zaveri and performed for the first time. Its energy had the audience on their feet. The performance closed with a heartfelt version of Ghalib's 'Hazaron Khwahishein Aisi.'
Speaking after the concert, Zaveri said, 'Ghazals hold a kind of stillness that lets you reflect. I wanted the music to feel real, without chasing applause. It was about creating a space where people could connect with the words in their own way, at their own pace. That's what I hope they felt.'
The evening was anchored by Dastangoi artist Syed Sahil Agha. Among the guests was Shazia Ilmi, National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Zaveri was supported by Shamshir Ali on tabla, Arshad Khan on esraj, Rohan Kadam on keyboard, Abshar Ahmed on guitar, Eshwar Dayal on percussion, and Shashank Saha for sound engineering.
Andaaz brought music and poetry together in a way that stayed with the audience long after the concert ended. For many, it was a return to a genre that continues to resonate across generations, carried forward with Zaveri's distinctive touch.

Rahul Mamkootathil: Kerala Youth Congress president resigns after harassment allegations from Malayalam actress
Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil has resigned as Kerala Youth Congress president. The move comes after the Palakkad leader faced harassment allegations from Malayalam film actress Rini Ann George. Writer Honey Bhaskaran has also accused Rahul Mamkootathil of inappropriate behaviour. His resignation came amid protests by BJP and CPI(M)-backed DYFI groups, who also demanded his resignation as MLA. At a press meet at his Adoor home, Mamkootathil said he had spoken to senior leaders. Rahul claimed to have spoken to opposition leader V D Satheesan. The Congress leader earlier said nobody found guilty would be spared. He had apparently spoken to KPCC and AICC leaders as well. "They did not demand my resignation. The actress is my friend, and I don't believe the person she mentioned was me. She is my good friend and will remain so. I believe that I have not done anything against the law or the Constitution of the country until now," PTI quoted him as saying. "At a time when the state government is facing severe protests and allegations, Congress leaders and party workers should not spend their time and energy on such matters. Hence, I have decided to resign from the post of Youth Congress president. I still believe that I have not committed any illegal act," Mamkootathil added. After the announcement, he refused to comment further and walked back inside his residence. Actress Rini Ann George earlier accused "a young leader" of a well-known political party of misbehaviour. Rini alleged that the leader had sent her objectionable messages. He also invited her to a hotel, she alleged. Despite her complaints to senior party members, the leader allegedly continued his misbehaviour. During a media interaction in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan said the actress was "like a daughter" to him.

In its 37th year, Pune Festival to host cultural extravaganza at Bal Gandharva Rangmandir next week
Written by Viraj Mandar Paranjape The Pune Festival, a celebration of art, culture, music, dance, sports, and tourism, has become a mainstay on the city's calendar alongside Ganeshotsav. This year, it turns 37 with a melange of performances, shows, and art forms. The 37th edition of the Pune Festival will be held from August 27 to September 6 at venues such as Shri Ganesh Kala-Krida Rangmanch, Bal Gandharva Rangmandir, and Art Gallery. All events are free, ensuring that people get a chance to witness some of the stellar works by esteemed artists. Mohan Tilloo, coordinator of cultural programmes at Bal Gandharva, said on Wednesday that this year's line-up includes Lavani performances, musical tributes, plays, poetry gatherings, dance competitions, and programmes for children and youths. 'Among the highlights are Dream Girl, a musical dedicated to Padma Shri Hema Malini, a long-time patron of the festival, on August 28, and a singing competition called Voice of Pune Festival,' said Tilloo. On August 30, the stage will be set for the classic Hindi-Urdu-Punjabi play about the Partition, Jis Lahore Ne Dekhya, O Jamyai Nai. In the play, written by Asghar Wajahat, a Muslim family from Lucknow turns into refugees in Lahore and is allotted a haveli that used to belong to a Hindu family that has crossed over to the other side of the border. But the haveli is not really empty, and what follows in the play makes the characters as well as the audience think anew about divisions and borders. Other attractions are the Kerala Mahotsav by the Pune Malayali Federation on August 31, Mukta Barve's performance in Priya Bhai, Ek Kavita Havi Aahe on September 1, and centenary tributes to legends such as Manik Varma, Srinivas Khale, Madan Mohan, and O P Nayyar on September 3. 'The festival will also feature the Mrs Pune Festival contest, bridal and mythological makeup competition, and Marathi classics such as Sangeet Saubhadra. A unique feature is a gathering of twins,' said Tilloo. 'The Pune Festival invites citizens to be part of this cultural extravaganza. All programmes are open and free,' he added.
