Criminal, immoral to make changes in Keeladi report, says ASI official
CHENNAI: ASI director (National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities) Amarnath Ramakrishna was highly critical of the Centre and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for seeking changes in his 982-page Keeladi excavation report.
In an interview to TOI, Ramakrishna, who retained NMMA but was relieved of "Antiquity", said, "I can proof-read and correct spelling errors, but not the concept. If I change the concept, I become a criminal. If you ask for change in first-hand information, you are spoiling the moral value."
On Union culture minister
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat
's remark that the Keeladi report was neither scientifically sound nor technically corroborated, Ramakrishnaurged him to read the report first.
To a question on whether there was an attempt to dilute the ancientness of Keeladi civilisation, Ramakrishna said, "They seem to be doing so." He said, "India has a plural culture. We have to enlighten people about it. They always talk about Indus Valley Civilisation, Vedic Civilisation, Maurya and Harshavardhana dynasties.
Why are you not seeing other parts of the country?"
Sangam existed here, said Ramakrishna. "Till date, we have not determined the age of the Sangam period." On ASI asking retired archaeologist P S Sriraman to submit his report on the third phase of excavation at Keeladi, Ramakrishna said, "How can a person without any background of the site simply say there is nothing?" Sriraman had submitted a report saying there were no significant findings during the third phase of excavations.

Modi distorting history, alleges Ramakrishna
Rajamahendravaram: CPI state secretary KRamakrishna accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of distorting Indian history by ignoring the Indian National Congress and Communists' role in the fight against British colonial rule. Addressing the media here on Saturday, he criticised Modi for spreading falsehoods about the RSS, which initially rejected the national flag and Dr BRAmbedkar's Constitution post-independence. Ramakrishna alleged the BJP still lacks faith in the Constitution, citing Modi's earlier remarks about amending it if the party won 400 Lok Sabha seats. He noted the BJP's recent electoral setback forced it to form a coalition with parties like the TDP. Ramakrishna questioned Modi's claim of reducing poverty by 25 per cent, asking why free rice distribution continues for millions if poverty has declined. He accused the Modi government of favoring industrialists like Adani and Ambani through its policies. On the Polavaram Project, Ramakrishna alleged collusion between the central and state governments to deceive the poor. He claimed the Modi government's policies harm project evacuees, with plans to reduce the dam's height to lower compensation, potentially turning it into a barrage. SP failed in oppn duties during 'Vision 2047' discussion: UP deputy CM Maurya
Attacking the Samajwadi Party (SP) over the absence of most of its lawmakers during the 24-hour discussion on the 'Vision 2047' document for a developed Uttar Pradesh on August 13-14, deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday said people of the state will punish the SP for not discharging its duties as opposition during the historic debate. UP deputy CM KP Maurya. (HT file) 'This is like running away from their responsibility. I condemn this in strong words and I believe that people of UP are seeing everything and will punish them accordingly,' said Maurya, the Leader of the House in UP Legislative Council, on the last day of the Monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature. 'In the previous SP regime, there was anarchy all over in the state. This was known as a riot state where goons and mafias were supported by the SP. Today law and order is in control and that is why we are on the path of development,' he added. On the PDA issue, Maurya said, 'The SP people misguided the people in the elections by saying that our Constitution is in danger just to get their votes. They have come up with a new PDA formula. I term it Parivar Development Agency and its chairman is former CM Akhilesh Yadav. Other members of his family are the directors of that agency.' On reservation, he said, 'There was a scam in the name of reservation during the SP regime in which it was being given to just one particular caste. Today all recruitment processes are transparent. The issue of women's reservation was a long standing debate in the country. Be it Congress, the SP or the BSP, no one did anything for it. It was only PM Modi who thought about it.' Reacting to Maurya's statement on PDA, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said, 'If PDA is Parivar Development Authority, I would like to say that our CM is also from PDA. For example, had his uncle not come to Mutt, he would not have come from Uttarakhand. This is not his native place. This is the real example of PDA.'
