Kevin McCloud admits major Grand Designs change that even die-hard fans missed
Grand Designs' latest series is now well underway, spotlighting more radical self-build projects and revisits to some previously featured homes.
The Channel 4 show celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024, with the anniversary special episodes attracting two million viewers. It resulted in two more seasons being announced for 2025, with the second expected in the autumn.
Meanwhile series 23 is currently being shown on Channel 4, featuring a floating home built using never-before-tested technology, as well as a pensioner with plans to create a mirror image of the beloved home that her mobility issues are forcing her out of.
Long-time fans of the show might have noticed quite a significant change that has been made to the programme that is especially apparent in recent episodes, though it appears to have passed many people by.
Presenter Kevin McCloud, who has fronted the show since its first episode in 1999, explained the huge change that has been made behind-the-scenes.
Speaking to the Mirror's Screen Time team, he shared that they now use a cutting edge camera that allows the team to capture some truly impressive shots. The change first came in during filming of last year's autumn series.
"We started using the same camera that they're using [in Netflix's Adolescence]. The reason is because it's got a Gimbal, rather like a Steadicam, which was invented for Stanley Kubrick for The Shining... and it allows you to walk down a corridor and instead of the camera bouncing it gives a beautiful smooth [shot]," Kevin shared.
"It means we can push into a building really slowly and navigate round the building cleanly without worrying about whether we're going to see tracks on the floor."
He continued: "It's an amazing camera so we're using it quite a bit, pretty well on every location day. We call it the chicken because as you step it does this [gestures] and it's like a chicken walking."
Fans of the series are marking their calendars for the latest Grand Designs Live event spanning May 2 to May 5. The exhibition sees live talks from previous contributors to the Channel 4 series, as well as advice for those planning their own big build.
This year Kevin will host an event first, with the launch of the 'Flatpack Olympics'. The event will pit people proud of their DIY skills against each other as they attempt to build everyday furniture in record time.
Kevin McCloud was speaking ahead of Grand Designs Live at London ExCeL, the UK's premier home and design exhibition, taking place from 2-5 May.

Reality star Adam Collard was overcome with emotion as he discussed some of the hardest moments he has endured in life on Channel 4's Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins Adam Collard broke down in tears while discussing a devastating miscarriage he and fiancée Laura Woods endured. The Love Island alum is one of the stars taking part in the current season of Channel 4's Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. Away from the cameras, Adam, 29, has been in a relationship with 28-year-old sports presenter Laura since October 2023. They became engaged in September last year and we lcomed a son named Leo in January this year. Amid the happy news, there has been tragedy, however, as the couple endured a miscarriage during a previous pregnancy. As part of his involvement in Who Dares Win, Adam was brought before the Special Forces staff on the show and questioned about the difficulties he has faced in life. In scenes due to air on the Channel 4 show this weekend, Adam opens up about his battle with depression, before breaking down in tears as he discusses the loss of a child. The emotional scenes show Adam wiping tears from his eyes as he struggles to discuss the hardship he went through. Discussing his life's toughest moments, he says: "One of them was with my erm, lost it was really close to getting there a second time and telling everyone." The Special Forces staff ask him if he is referencing a miscarriage, to which Adam nods. He continues: "I think I was proud of the fact that I was excited for it, which I didn't think I ever would be. "And when it got taken away, and it was 10 times worse for her, I think it hit us like a ton of bricks. We just really, really went to a bit of a bad place. And to be honest, in front of her, I pretended I was cool, and pretended I was absolutely fine." It is not the only point at which Adam becomes overcome during Sunday night's episode, however. Another task shows the participants - who include former footballers Adebayo Akinfenwa and Troy Deeney, boxer Conor Benn, and The Traitors star Harry Clark - reading out letters they penned to be distributed in the event of their death. Adam pays tribute to his fiancée, Laura, in his own note, revealing: "The last few months have been really tough, but nowhere near as tough as you." After being consoled by his fellow contestants, he is able to complete reading his letter, which ends: "I wish I had one more night to give you the world's biggest cuddle. Love you always, Adam." 'Moving' period drama making fans 'sob' now streaming for free
The period drama is available to stream for free Netflix fans can stream a "moving" period drama that is making fans "sob". All The Light We Cannot See is a limited series that was released back in 2023. It follows the story of a blind teenager, Marie-Laure, and her father, Daniel LeBlanc, who flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr, fans see Aria Mia Loberti as Marie-Laure and Avengers star Mark Ruffalo as Daniel LeBlanc. Viewers may also recognise Hugh Laurie as Uncle Etienne, Louis Hofmann as Werner, Lars Eidinger as Von Rumpel, and Marion Bailey as Madame Manec. Netflix teases: "Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer who seeks to possess the stone for his own selfish means, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo, where they take up residence with a reclusive uncle who transmits clandestine radio broadcasts as part of the resistance. "Yet here in this once-idyllic seaside city, Marie-Laure's path also collides inexorably with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler's regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie-Laure as well as her faith in humanity and the possibility of hope." Aria Mia Loberti herself is legally blind and has previously opened up on the importance of her role. Since its release in 2023, the four part series is available to stream on Netflix as fans have commented on its high emotion. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, one fan said: "Even after all the war she's been through she's still standing . . this made me sob like a child deep inside my soul, just wow it's perfection." Another wrote: "One of the most amazing war related TV shows out there. I wish more people knew of it. It has a beautiful, moving storyline, wonderful actors portraying strong and thoughtful characters. "The atmosphere of war, the dressing, the music set the right mood for the viewer to enjoy. And it's got deep messages, love, care, light in it. I highly recommend." A fourth replied: "Moving storylines, underlying statements about class, intelligence, and education. Excellent sets. A series with all the emotions." Another said: "We loved this series. There have been a million WW2 movies and series but they came from a perspective I have never seen before. Only thing I didn't like was it was only 4 episodes."
