Supercars 2025: Broc Feeney crushes rival's hopes of a breakout win in the opening sprint race at Tasmania Super 440
Bouncing back from a lean round in New Zealand when his team failed to score a podium, Feeney took his season tally to three victories to continue Triple Eight's dominance at the Tasmanian circuit.
The 22-year-old cruised to victory in the opening 50-lap sprint race, finishing almost eight seconds ahead of Tickford Racing's pole-sitter Thomas Randle, with Brad Jones Racing's Bryce Fullwood finishing third to claim his first podium for the year.
Starting on pole position for the second race, Feeney faced a bigger battle for his second victory, forced to fight to reclaim the lead after Matt Stone Racing's Nick Percat overcut the race leaders with his mid-race pit stop.
It only took Feeney a couple of laps before he was able to wrestle back the lead from Percat, but Triple Eight boss Jamie Whincup admitted the team had been lucky to escape with the race challenge after gambling on a four-tyre pit stop.
In his 100th race, Feeney went on to take a two-and-a-half second win over Percat, while Tickford Racing's Cam Waters finished third.
Claiming maximum points for the day as he also secured the two fastest laps, Feeney jumped to the top of the Supercars standings ahead of Waters and Brown.
Feeney had slipped to fourth in the championship standings after failing to score a podium at the last round in Taupo.
Defending Supercars champion Brown's hold on the title lead slipped after finishing fifth and 11th in Saturday's two races.
Feeney now his sights set on a clean sweep of the three races at Symmons Plains.
'We made it very hard for ourselves, I didn't expect so many people to come out in front of me,' Feeney said.
'I didn't think I would be getting emotional towards the back end of that race, but with a few laps to go I'm like, 'Man, this is going to be pretty special'.
'I just can't thank the team, my family, everyone that has backed me (enough), to get me here to 100 races. To win today both of them is super special.
'It was a great battle with Nick, that was heaps of fun. For a few laps there, I thought this was going to be pretty tricky, but to get back through the lead and then once again have really good speed is awesome.
'We'll celebrate tonight, but we want to go for three (wins) tomorrow, but it's been a great weekend so far so I am absolutely chuffed.
'It's about time we got those orange (title leader) numbers back on this car and hopefully they stay for a bit longer this time.'
Feeney now holds an eight-point title lead over Waters, who was also fourth in the first race, while Brown is 12 points off the lead.
The Gold Coast racer is chasing a first Supercars title after finishing runner-up to Brown last year.
A 200 km race on Sunday will complete the round at the Tasmania Super 440.
RACE 1: FEENEY OFF TO A FLYER
Triple Eight young gun Broc Feeney has given his championship standing a boost after cruising to victory in the opening sprint race at Symmons Plains, as he crushed Tickford Racing's Thomas Randle's hopes of a breakthrough win.
Bouncing back from a lean round in New Zealand when the team failed to score a podium, Feeney claimed his second win for the year as he finished almost eight seconds ahead of second-placed Randle.
At Triple Eight's happy hunting ground at the Tasmanian circuit, Feeney started on the front row alongside pole-sitter Randle and duelled with the Ford driver over the first 11 laps before making his move on the back straight for the race lead.
Randle dropped another place to Feeney's teammate Brown later in the lap and it appeared Triple Eight was on target for a one-two before the defending champion encountered trouble at his pit stop and lost ground.
Feeney was unchallenged for the rest of the race, leading home Randle and Brad Jones Racing's Bryce Fullwood, who claimed his first podium for the year.
Brown finished the 50-lap race in fifth with his closest championship rival, Tickford's Cam Waters, taking fourth.
The win moved Feeney from fourth position in the driver standings back into third as he capitalised on his 'rocket ship' Camaro with his lap record pace.
Feeney will have another chance to add to his win in Saturday afternoon's second sprint race when he starts on pole position.
'I'm stoked to get a win again, absolutely chuffed with that – the thing was a rocket ship,' Feeney said.
'I knew on the first few laps I probably had the speed, so I just had to wait for my time to get past Thomas and he was driving fantastic.
'I knew where I was going to get him (Randle), I just had to wait for my time. I had a good run through one and two and I knew it was going to be the lap … a bit of side-drafting with the Tickford car which I am used to and it was good to get one back.
'(I'm) stoked for the team, it's obviously a great bounce back.'
Feeney's victory gave Triple Eight its 27th win from 52 starts at Symmons Plains.
Randle, still chasing his first Supercars race win, was pleased to be able to still walk away from a podium but admitted he did not have the pace to match Feeney.
'It's the first podium for me here. It's nice to get the podium and capitalise on the race and I think that's all we could have done,' Randle said.
'It was cool to lead for the first few laps, I was trying to break the slipstream off Broc, but he was too fast.'
There was drama before the race when both Dick Johnson Racing Fords were investigated for a technical breach, but were cleared by the stewards.

No team over the past month has had a worse inside 50m differential than the Power, losing the count by 21.8 per game in this time. •Ollie Hollands has been used off half back to give Carlton more run and carry and he has stood up well, with a career-best 29 disposals and 10 rebound 50s last week. He is a hard working player who along with Lachie Cowan are the young players that Carlton need to continue to allow growth within to build a rebounding game that can give their forwards good supply. •Aliir Aliir's form through this year has been exceptional. Back to his intercepting best, Aliir was able to patrol the back half of the ground, mopping up errant opposition possessions in the air and on the ground. At his best he is a player that opposition coaches have to plan around and Carlton will need to make him accountable to quell his influence in the contest. HAWTHORN V MELBOURNE MCG, 4.15pm •Hawthorn's form has returned at the right time of year, looking up and about and energised in its last two games. Despite the absence of Will Day and Josh Weddle, they look to be imposing a game style that could challenge other contenders. Hawthorn's pressure game has been competition best across the season and when they can speed up off turnovers they look at their best. •Melbourne brought energy and workrate to their strong performance against the Dogs last week. In the game all the way until the end, they were able to match their midfield and bounce off halfback consistently to provide supply to their front six. With two more big games to come against Hawthorn and Collingwood, it gives the players a focus to test themselves and shape the finals in 2025 while taking some key lessons into next year. •Since Round 19, Hawthorn has conceded more points from intercept possessions than any side – over 30 per game. The Demons' ability to transition quickly, especially off kick-ins where they're ranked No.1 for scoring, could expose that vulnerability if the Hawks' forward pressure drops for even a moment. •Jake Melksham's seven goals from beyond 50 metres this season – more than any player in the AFL – is a threat Hawthorn must plan for, especially given its 21.5% one-on-one loss rate in defence. Conversely, when Nick Watson kicks multiple goals, Hawthorn is 8-2 – making his influence a strong barometer of its winning chances. Shane Flanagan fumes as obstruction non-call robs theDragons
Dragons coach Shane Flanagan was fuming at an obstruction non-call for Adam Pompey's first try that cost his side in their 14-10 loss to the Warriors in Round 24. Pompey's try in the 63rd minute drew Flanagan's ire, as Dragons five-eighth Lyhkan King-Togia appealed for an obstruction after being impeded by lead runner Marata Niukore in the lead-up. Flanagan was not asked about the crucial decision post-match, but chose to bring it up anyway. 'I know you haven't asked the question, but I am going to give an answer,' Flanagan said. 'It was really tough for us that what was an obstruction last week is not an obstruction this week. 'I started playing footy when I was four years old and I don't know the rules anymore. I deadset do not know the rules. 'So it is tough, but we are a tough club and this is a really connected unit and we will fight really hard for the next three weeks.' Flanagan was pressed if he thought it was a clear obstruction from Niukore. 'As I said last week it was an obstruction and this week it is not,' Flanagan said. 'The boys asked out on the field numerous times and they just got shooed away, so that is frustrating.' Despite the loss Flanagan was proud of his players after they lost three forwards Jack de Belin, Hamish Stewart and Hame Sele to category one concussions, which saw them reduced to two on the bench including 18th man Tyrell Sloan. 'I feel a lot of pride,' Flanagan said. 'I'm proud of the group. Their effort. Their attitude. Their commitment. 'It was one of the better performances I have seen for a long period of time. 'To lose three forwards so early in the game and then you lose three interchanges there as well, so we had just one forward just rotating around and we had to activate our 18th man. 'I can't talk highly enough of the group. How hard they tried. How committed they are and how connected they are to the jersey and fighting for each other, so really proud.' Flanagan revealed the three players were doing OK, but would miss a week at least. 'Jack is looking OK,' Flanagan said. 'He is up and about. His 250th game, so really disappointing that happened. 'Hame Sele is very similar. He is feeling OK and Hamish Stewart has got a pretty nasty cut to the back of his head form the de Belin incident. 'So they will all miss a week more than likely I would think.' Dragons skipper Damien Cook was proud of his troops after a game unlike any other he had experienced. 'No I don't think I have ever been a part of a game like that,' Cook said. 'We spoke about it at halftime this could be one of the greatest wins if we could steal it, but still the result is still a massive win for us as a team. 'Just the resilience and character that we showed today is a massive step in a good direction for us.'

A community football coach has been sacked after making a crude social media remark about fitness influencer Tammy Hembrow's relationship with AFL star Bailey Smith. Smith has not confirmed the relationship, responding only with a string of expletives when questioned by reporters at Geelong training. Their public outing attracted a wave of online commentary, much of it targeting Hembrow with misogynistic remarks. 'We have consulted with members of our women's side and we are committed to offering them and all the females in our club any support necessary.
