Mizzou's Eli Drinkwitz is college football's Tobias Fünke
We can only assume that in Drinkwitz's youth, someone once told him he was funny, and ol' Eli didn't think to fact check this. Instead, the 42-year-old grew up to become college football's King of Cringe. He's like something out of a television show these days.
A specific television show, actually. Even more specifically, a certain character on that show: Tobias Fünke of Arrested Development, portrayed by David Cross.
No one TV history has been able to turn seemingly innocuous explanations into unnerving innuendo quite like Tobias. And no one has been able to match his, er, wit, in real life quite like Drinkwitz.
Don't believe me? Let's try putting some extremely real Drinkwitz quotes over Tobias memes and see what happens.
Of course, there's more to Tobias than unfortunate turns of phrase. Tobias Fünke has an essence that can be described as delusional, theatrical and the result of a deep-seeded need for recognition beyond his infamous in-laws.
Drinkwitz fits the bill here flawlessly.

To be clear, there is nothing inherently wrong with being dorky. It can, however, make recruiting a bit tougher and force players to answer for your antics.
But Drinkwitz's results speak for themselves. He's won at least 10 games in each of the last two seasons, including a Cotton Bowl and Music City Bowl along the way. As long as he keeps that up, Missouri will gladly withstand his abysmal attempts at humor.
If he falls off, he'll need a new start pronto. Hopefully, he just doesn't have a desire to put that on a license plate. It's already taken.

Nick Saban dismisses Greg McElroy's claim he could return to coaching
Whether it was because of the content of his message or the timing of it — in the doldrums of July — Greg McElroy sent shockwaves through the college football world last month when he suggested that his former coach at Alabama, Nick Saban, hadn't necessarily roamed a sideline for the final time. It was news to Saban — to put it mildly. The legendary former Crimson Tide coach, who is entering his second season as a college football analyst for ESPN, dismissed McElroy's claim at the Nick Saban Legacy Awards in Birmingham, Alabama on Monday, Aug, 18 while poking fun at the quarterback of his 2009 BCS national championship team. REQUIRED READING: College football gifts: Nick Saban gets new hat, Lincoln Riley finds escape 'I don't know where that came from,' the 73-year-old Saban said. 'Greg McElroy played quarterback for us and if he had done something like that when he was a player, he would have gotten his (expletive) kicked.' McElroy — who also works as an ESPN college football analyst, technically making him Saban's colleague — said on his radio show on WJOX in Birmingham in July that he heard from a source 'very much in the know' that Saban wasn't done coaching. He added that he wouldn't have mentioned it publicly if it 'wasn't someone notable' who made the comment to him. In January 2024, about two weeks after Alabama lost to eventual national champion Michigan in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, Saban retired after 17 seasons with the Crimson Tide. Saban won seven national championships as a head coach, six of which came at Alabama. As he prepares for another season as a panelist on ESPN's 'College GameDay,' Saban said he and his wife, Terry, 'don't have any regrets' about the decision to step away. "I have been part of a team since I was 9 years old playing little league baseball. I just had a tremendous fear that I would miss it,' Saban said. 'That part, I miss. But the working 14 hours per day, the recruiting, the changes that were going through in college football, the challenges that that presented was a little much at my age and the last year I coached."

Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban fires back at Greg McElroy over coaching rumor
Nick Saban was asked about the rumor of a potential return to coaching in his answer: "Greg McElroy played quarterback for us and if he'd've done something like that when he was a player, he would have got his a** kicked." 🤣 #RollTide It's safe to say that Greg McElroy isn't legendary Alabama football coach Nick Saban's favorite former player at the moment. Saban took a direct swipe at McElroy, the starting quarterback for Alabama's 2009 national championship team, Monday night at the Nick Saban Legacy Awards ceremony in Birmingham over the rumor McElroy started in July regarding a possible return to coaching for the 73-year-old college football icon. "You know, I don't know where that came from. Greg McElroy played quarterback for us, and if he'd have done something like that when he was a player, he'd have got his ass kicked," an unamused Saban said to a hearty applause. McElroy, now an analyst and color commentator for ABC and ESPN, claimed on July 14 that a "very much in-the-know person" had told him the seven-time national champion might not be finished coaching. The rumor gained traction at SEC media days in Atlanta that week with multiple coaches weighing in, including second-year Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer. "He's one of the greatest to ever do it, so he's earned the right to do what he wants," DeBoer had said at the podium in Atlanta on July 16. "The best part about what Coach Saban is doing right now is he's still involved in the game. He's growing the game. He brings passion to it." The following day, Saban's daughter Kristen Saban refuted the rumor in a social media post to Instagram. Saban himself later shot down the report. Saban is set to begin his second season as an analyst on ESPN's "College GameDay," a role that earned him a Sports Emmy award back in May. 'During their time being employed by Defendants, Plaintiffs were denied minimum wage payments and denied overtime as part of Defendants' scheme to classify Plaintiffs and other dancers/entertainers as independent contractors,' the lawsuit says. The dancers also alleged that The Furnace took their tips and demanded illegal kickbacks via house fees. The three employees are seeking $100,000 in damages, a jury trial, and more. The lawsuit arrived over a year after the same strip club settled a lawsuit for the same claims. Dancers alleged, in the suit filed in 2021, that they weren't paid minimum wage or overtime, and had to partake in illegal kickbacks. The Furnace settled the lawsuit in February 2024 to the tune of $1.25 million. The 19 former workers who filed the complaint were paid from the $1.25 million based on 'an approximation of the time Plaintiffs worked but were not paid minimum wage.'
