Fantasy Football Draft Strategy: Guide to building a dominant roster if you have a top-4 pick

Yahoo6 hours ago
Yahoo Sports' Justin Boone goes over the best approaches to take in this year's drafts, depending on which spot you're selecting from in fantasy football.

Middle of the round (Aug. 20)
End of the round (Aug. 21)
Here's how I'm attacking the draft with one of the first four picks in a 12-team half-PPR scoring league. Average draft position (ADP) can vary from site-to-site, but consider this a guide to help you build a dominant roster in 2025.
Round 1
Picks: 1.01-1.04
The first few picks of your draft are fairly straight forward. If you're in the top two, you're going to get either Ja'Marr Chase or Bijan Robinson. And if you're in third or fourth spot, you'll be picking from Saquon Barkley, Justin Jefferson or Jahmyr Gibbs — depending on your positional preference and concern about Jefferson's hamstring injury. Bottom line, there are no bad options here.

Round 2
Picks: 2.09-2.12
With Drake London's ADP rising to the middle and sometimes early second round, I've found myself going running back more often at the end of this frame. Whether it's Chase Brown, Bucky Irving, or Josh Jacobs — you're going to get a top-10 back with top-five upside at the position.

There's a bit of a dead zone when it comes to running backs and receivers in the third round of this year's drafts. That's pushed me to take an elite quarterback or tight end in this range more than I have in seasons past. The multi-point weekly advantage you get from having elite options at the one-off positions is very enticing. Josh Allen gets the nod over Lamar Jackson here since he has finished as a top-four fantasy QB in each of the last five seasons.

With the balanced approach so far, we could go in a few different directions here. Veteran backs like Alvin Kamara and James Conner have proven themselves year-after-year, but are also on the wrong side of 30 now. Instead, I'll take the rising star in TreVeyon Henderson who has a lot of momentum given his high draft capital, explosive profile, high-end pass-catching ability, quality pass-protection skills and several preseason highlights. Even with Rhamondre Stevenson remaining involved, Henderson can still smash in fantasy the same way Jahmyr Gibbs did as a rookie when he was the RB11 in fantasy points per game despite sharing the backfield with David Montgomery.

We've reached the area of drafts (Round 5-7) where you should be capitalizing on the receiver values. Pickens went from being the No. 1 wideout in Pittsburgh to the No. 2 behind CeeDee Lamb in Dallas, but with the projected volume in Brian Schottenheimer's offense, he should actually see an uptick in targets. It also helps that Pickens has been the talk of Cowboys' offseason practices, as he benefits from the defensive attention paid to Lamb. We've seen other overqualified second receivers like Tee Higgins excel in fantasy and Pickens has a similar ceiling if everything goes well.

Continuing to attack the receiver position is a priority in this range and also helps us fill out our starting lineup. Ricky Pearsall missed time during his rookie season recovering from a gunshot wound, but flashed his potential when he returned. In the seven contests where he saw at least four targets as a rookie, Pearsall averaged over four catches and 50 yards per contest, which over a full season would have made him the WR23 in fantasy. With Brandon Aiyuk not expected back until midseason and Jauan Jennings dealing with a calf issue, Pearsall has established a strong connection with Brock Purdy and is poised to break out in 2025.

Picks: 7.01-7.04
The race to fill my Flex spot ends now with an underrated running back in New York. Beat writers have made it clear that Tracy is the Giants' lead back and should enjoy something close to a 70-30 split this season with Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary battling for snaps behind him. That projection makes sense after Tracy performed well in the starting role last season, averaging RB1 fantasy stats over the final 14 weeks. He's one of the better running back values in drafts at the moment.

Round 8
Picks: 8.09-8.12
We round out our starting lineup with my favorite tight end to target when I miss out on the elite players at the position. Kraft is coming off a low-end TE1 fantasy result last year, when he led all tight ends in yards after the catch. This offseason, the Packers have repeatedly talked about getting him the ball more. With no clear No. 1 receiver in Green Bay, it's possible Kraft could be a focal point of the passing attack, which would give him an outside shot at a top-five finish.

Round 9
Picks: 9.01-9.04
The Jaguars' backfield is one of the hardest to forecast this season since they have a new coaching staff, three potential lead back candidates (Tank Bigsby, Travis Etienne Jr., Bhayshul Tuten) and unpredictable usage from the preseason and training camp practices. This could go any way, including one of the veterans being traded at some point. But after seeing what Liam Coen did with the Buccaneers' offense last season, this is an uncertain situation I want to take shots on. Bigsby appears to have the inside track at starting in Week 1, so I'll take him as my first bench stash.

Round 10
Picks: 10.09-10.12
Coleman is one of my favorite sleeper receivers this year and allows me to grab someone who could emerge as Josh Allen's top target. With Khalil Shakir recovering from a high-ankle sprain and Coleman earning tons of praise throughout the offseason, it's possible the 22-year-old could step up entering his second season. Ceiling outcomes are my focus the further into the draft we get and Coleman has a chance to be a double-digit touchdown scorer in 2025.

Late rounds
Once you're outside the first 10 rounds, you can stop paying close attention to ADP and simply focus on loading your bench up with as many high-upside stashes as possible — with one-injury-away running backs offering the quickest path to value.
You should also consider passing on a defense or kicker and instead using those final two bench spots on more running backs and receivers who could see their value rise before the season. When we get closer to Week 1, you can drop whichever stashes don't increase their stock or make trades to free up a roster spot.

Scherzer, Springer lead Blue Jays to 7-3 win over Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Max Scherzer pitched six strong innings to notch his 220th career win, and George Springer hit an early two-run home run as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Tuesday night. Scherzer (4-2) allowed one run and four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The 18-year veteran has pitched at least six innings in five consecutive starts. The Blue Jays (74-53) built a 5-0 lead against Mitch Keller in the first two innings. Springer hit a 423-foot shot to center field for his 20th homer of the season in the second inning. The Blue Jays scored three runs in the first when Alejandro Kirk had an RBI single and Nathan Lukes followed with a two-run single. Kirk added a two-run home run, his 10th, off Colin Holderman in the seventh inning to make 7-1. The All-Star catcher finished with three hits and three RBIs. Keller (5-12) was tagged for five runs in 3 1/3 innings after giving up six runs in four innings in a loss at National League-leading Milwaukee in his previous start last Wednesday. The Pirates lost for the eighth time in 10 games as they fell deeper into the NL Central basement. Blue Jays All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sat out because of tightness in his left hamstring. An MRI performed earlier Tuesday revealed no damage. Key stat The Blue Jays are 25-13 in interleague games, tops in the major leagues. Key moment The Pirates loaded the bases with none out in the second inning against Scherzer but managed only one run on a groundout by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Up next The rubber game of the three-game series is set for Wednesday with Chris Bassitt (11-6, 4.22 ERA) pitching for the Blue Jays. Johan Oviedo (0-0, 18.00) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to start for the Pirates. ___ AP MLB:

Realmuto, Schwarber and Stott homers power Phillies to a 6-4 win over Mariners

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night. Realmuto's homer was a no-doubt blast to left field on a first-pitch sinker from Seattle reliever Matt Brash (1-2). Realmuto, who hit his ninth homer, reached base three times and had three RBIs. He also had an RBI single and reached on a catcher's interference call on Mariners backstop Mitch Garver. It was the third time in a month the Phillies were on the positive side of a catcher's interference call. Schwarber opened the scoring in the first inning with his 44th homer. He leads the NL in homers and the majors with 104 RBIs. Stott hit his eighth homer of the season, and Bryce Harper drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. David Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in relief in his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Phillies since Game 5 of the 2022 World Series. Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect ninth for his his 22nd save and sixt5h with Philly since being acquired at the trade deadline. Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suarez had RBI doubles for Seattle, which has lost four straight and six of seven. Bryce Miller was activated from the injured list before the game and made his first start since May 12 for the Mariners. He allowed four runs on five hits in five innings. MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh went 1 for 3 with a double and two walks for Seattle. Raleigh, with 47 homers is one shy of matching the MLB record for home runs in a season by a catcher. Key moment Realmuto's homer put the Phillies ahead for good, leading to their third straight win. Key stat Philadelphia's Cristopher Sanchez matched his career high with 12 strikeouts, allowing two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Up next Mariners RHP Luis Castillo (8-6, 3.48 ERA) starts Wednesday against Phillies LHP Jesus Luzardo (11-6, 4.21). ___ AP MLB:

What we're hearing about Kyle Tucker's reset as the Cubs work with frustrated star

CHICAGO — It doesn't take any inside information or an advanced understanding of the science of hitting to know that something with Kyle Tucker is off. Cubs manager Craig Counsell simply acknowledged the obvious when he finally decided to give the All-Star outfielder a break. How long this reset will last is unclear. Advertisement 'We'll see how it goes,' said Tucker, who stayed on the bench for Tuesday afternoon's 6-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers and did not start in the nightcap. What, exactly, is wrong with Tucker is also uncertain. Counsell, who outlined his ideas in a Sunday night conversation with Tucker, remained similarly vague about this shutdown when he spoke with the media: 'We'll see where that goes.' The situation has turned ugly with Tucker getting booed at Wrigley Field for not producing and not running to first base. His individual numbers since the beginning of July are disappointing and conspicuous, especially given the current gap in the National League Central between the Cubs and Brewers. It's also out of character for an understated player to be slamming his bat and helmet with this kind of frequency. 'You see the physical stuff – that's easy – it's a lot of groundballs,' Counsell said. 'But we've seen the mental struggle, too. Sometimes, it results in body language and things like that. We see it in each other when we're struggling as people. We try to help. We try to support. We try to motivate, in any way we can. But like the mechanics thing, there's no perfect answers.' The questions kept coming at Tucker during a rapid-fire session with reporters at his locker that lasted less than five minutes. After months of Cubs fans clamoring for the big-market franchise to sign him to a long-term contract extension, some have turned on him loudly. 'It's fine,' Tucker said. 'I still got to do my job, regardless of cheers or boos or whatever. Obviously, I got to do a better job.' 'Regardless you still gotta run down the line whether you're out by 50 feet or not. It's just a little tough right now.' Kyle Tucker on not running out a ground ball to first base. — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 19, 2025 Those responsibilities include eliminating the low-energy reactions to all those groundballs hit to the right side of the infield. Tucker — a hitter whose left-handed swing once drew comparisons to Ted Williams' approach — has one home run and a 46.5 percent groundball rate in the second half. 'It's kind of exhausting,' Tucker said. 'I don't know how many times I've rolled over to first or second. Regardless, you still got to run down the line, whether you're out by 50 feet or not.' Advertisement Tucker's lack of power has created some doubts about his current fitness. 'I'm fine,' he said. The event often cited is the headfirst slide in June that jammed his right ring finger, though that turned out to be his best month as a Cub (.982 OPS) to this point. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer suggested that the injury might have inadvertently led to some bad habits. 'I don't know, I can't really point to one thing,' Tucker said. 'If I could, I would have already fixed that.' Curiously, on the same morning that Counsell stated Tucker is 'healthy and available,' Brewers manager Pat Murphy appeared on 670 The Score and answered a general question about the state of the Cubs by declaring: 'I think Tucker's hurt.' 'I don't have any information, but Tucker's not the same,' Murphy said on the Cubs' flagship radio station. Murphy previously served as Counsell's bench coach in Milwaukee and college coach at Notre Dame. '(Tucker's) hurt, and he's playing through it. He's such a class kid that he probably doesn't mention it to anyone. That kid, I don't know him. But everything I hear, and watching him play the game, he's first class. 'He wouldn't complain if something's bothering him because he doesn't want an excuse. He feels that responsibility. But I would say there's probably something physically going on there.' On the mental side of the game, it's natural to wonder how much the timing of this career-worst slump is weighing on Tucker, who entered the season as this winter's No. 1 projected free agent. 'I just care about winning today's game and helping out with that,' Tucker said. 'Regardless of what happens later, it's not a factor right now.' The outside noise did not seem to bother Tucker at all when he got traded from the Houston Astros last offseason. Counsell also dismissed the pressure narrative and potential impact on Tucker's next contract: 'That's kind of a story we all tell ourselves about what's going on. You can't say, 'Yes, that's it.' It's a hard one to answer.' Advertisement In putting context around the prior struggles of young hitters such as Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw, Counsell has emphasized that all major-league hitters are constantly making adjustments. It's just that fans and the media put an outsized focus on the learning curve for rookies. In reality, even a player as accomplished as Tucker has to keep adapting and searching. 'The at-bats have borne this out,' Counsell said. 'Kyle's still doing a pretty good job of swinging at the right pitches and getting himself to the places he wants. His first at-bat Sunday was kind of like the defining thing of what he's feeling. Because he got himself to a 3-1 (count and) got a fastball where he wanted it. And hit a groundball. 'As a player, (you're thinking): 'I don't know why that keeps happening. I did exactly what I wanted to do for four pitches. I did my job really well and got myself a pitch to hit and I got the same result.' Mechanically, what he's trying to feel, what he wants to feel, it's not happening when he gets in the box. 'There's separation from what he wants, what's happening and what he thinks he feels. You just try to keep working on that. It's a little thing that puts it back in place. It's probably a simple thing that puts it back in place. It doesn't even have to be a successful swing. It could be a foul ball that puts it back in place. 'The question we're asking ourselves now is: 'Does some time off kind of get him away from the thoughts that he's going to have, and then maybe create some new thoughts?'' Owen Caissie drives his first career homer the other way 💪 — MLB (@MLB) August 19, 2025 While Tucker took a breather in Tuesday's Game 1, Owen Caissie took advantage of the opportunity. Recently promoted from Triple-A Iowa, Caissie lined a two-run single into right field, launched his first major-league homer over the wall in left-center field and made some difficult catches in the right-field corner. But the big idea remains the same, ever since that blockbuster win-now trade. The Cubs absolutely need Tucker to perform if they're going to qualify for the playoffs and bring October baseball back to Wrigley Field. Advertisement 'Kyle is one of the best hitters of our generation,' Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd said. 'We all go through hard times. But that's why there's 26 of us in there. We pick each other up. Kyle will do what he needs to do. There's not a worry in the world about him. 'He picked us up, at times, in the first half of this year. Let's not forget that. Where we are this year is because of him. We got his back. Not a doubt in the world. We have all the trust in him. Everyone goes through rough patches. That's why we're a team. Just keep going forward.' Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle
