Handcuffed & crying: Indian student's US airport ordeal sparks outrage; Indian embassy responds

An Indian-American entrepreneur, Kunal Jain , shared a video on X showing an Indian student being handcuffed by police at Newark airport . Jain, a social entrepreneur and Hindi author who recently moved to India, highlighted the incident on social media. He also tagged the Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar adding that the young boy was supposed to board the same flight as him but didn't. "I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy," wrote Jain while tagging the Indian embassy in the US. Reacting to the video, the Indian Embassy in New York on Monday said that it was in touch with local authorities in this regard and the Consulate remains ever committed to the welfare of Indian Nationals. The incident marks one of the many atrocities being faced by Indian students who are fearful and unsure of their future in America. Live Events — SONOFINDIA (@SONOFINDIA) Many people commented on Jain's post, condemning him for posting the incident and not staying around to help the young student. "So easy to write stories. If you were that concerned why didn't you get him released?" wrote a person. Others questioned the reason why Indian students went to America for higher studies in the first place with the high cost and low safety the country ensures. "Now US is not your dream land. It has become hell for you." "Indian students must seriously rethink studying in the US. It's no longer the dreamland we were sold. The reality today is stark; rising violence, internal strife, racial discrimination, and institutions overrun with woke nonsense," wrote another. A person marked how the way the student was being dealt with in public was not justified, writing, "Irrespective of his status, situation, language which you might not understand or you might not convince with his answers, totally agree. But not a way to treat in front of everyone like this." Another shared how being deported might just be a good thing for the student with India's rising development. "Deported to India? Why should he be sad? I mean he is going back to a rising superpower!" While most social media users were offended on behalf of the students, others asked if he had legally migrated to the States. "Sorry but he has an illegal status. He should be deported. He can come back to his country. There is no shortage of dreams here."

Man smuggling 95 exotic animals, birds from Bangkok held at Mumbai airport

Customs officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport arrested an Indian national attempting to smuggle exotic birds and other animals into the country on Monday. Customs officials seized 95 exotic animals and birds from the accused, of which 32 were found to be dead. Officials said some of the seized animals and birds are protected species that were being smuggled into the country due to their high demand. On the basis of profiling, one Indian national, who landed at the airport from Bangkok on Monday, was intercepted by officers of Mumbai Customs Zone-III. Upon questioning, the passenger exhibited signs of nervousness prompting the customs officials to examine his baggage. Upon examination, it was found that the passenger was carrying a tarantula, 80 iguanas— 50 live and 30 dead, honey bear and two Brazilian Cherry Head Tortoise. All these animals and birds are either listed in Appendix – II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and Schedule IV of the newly amended Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Besides these, one dead fire‑tailed sunbird was also seized. Customs officials also recovered one chaco golden-knee tarantula, six Leucistic Sugar Glider, one dead purple throated sunbird and two crested finchbill. 'The animals were seized and the passenger was placed under arrest under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962,' said a customs officer. The investigators are trying to find out more details of their handlers or groups who roped the man for the smuggling work, said a source. Officers are also checking if the accused indulged in smuggling activities in the past.
