Police seize rogue Napoli merchandise ahead of title decider

ROME - Italian police said on Thursday they had seized more than 20,000 items of counterfeit Napoli merchandise as soccer fans in the southern city of Naples gear up to celebrate another Serie A title.
Vintage and current shirts in the blue of Napoli, shorts, scarves and caps were among the items seized in raids on the central Via Toledo and in the tightly packed Spanish Quarter, police said on Thursday. The goods seized had an estimated commercial value of over 300,000 euros ($340,000).
Police are investigating 18 people for alleged counterfeiting, receiving stolen goods and commercial fraud.
They include a 71-year-old man who had set up shop at the foot of the 'Maradona Mural' in the Spanish Quarter, a site that honours the former captain of Napoli and Argentina.
Poor quality items were being sold for 50 euros to fans and tourists.
Napoli have a one-point lead over Inter Milan and will be Italian champions for a fourth time if they beat Cagliari at home on Friday.
Soccer-mad Naples staged wild celebrations when the team won the title in 2023, their first scudetto since a golden era when Maradona led them to glory in 1987 and 1990.($1 = 0.8853 euros) REUTERS

With the help of the controversial programme, Greece's Kristian Gkolomeev swam the men's 50 metres freestyle in 20.89 seconds to shave 0.02 seconds off the long-standing record set by Brazil's Cesar Cielo in 2009. Gkolomeev, who has competed at four Olympics and came fifth in the event at the Paris Games last year with a time of 21.59 seconds, said he had gained "an extra 10 pounds of muscle" before the attempt. Enhanced Games had declined to disclose which "performance enhancements" the 31-year-old used. "Individuals who support, endorse, or participate in sporting events that embrace the use of scientific advancements or other practices ... will not be eligible to hold positions with World Aquatics or to participate in any World Aquatics competitions, events, or other activities," World Aquatics said. The practices can include either prohibited substances or prohibited methods. "This ineligibility would apply to roles such as athlete, coach, team official, administrator, medical support staff, or government representative," the governing body added. The Enhanced Games operate under the principle that banning performance-enhancing drugs in major competitions does not protect athletes but rather stifles their performance, and called on athletes to join the competition. The World Anti-Doping Agency had condemned the Enhanced Games as "dangerous and irresponsible", while Olympic 50 metres freestyle champion Cam McEvoy said Gkolomeev's time was 'irrelevant' to the sport. "Those who enable doped sport are not welcome at World Aquatics or our events," World Aquatics president Husain Al Musallam said. "This new bylaw ensures that we can continue to protect the integrity of our competitions, the health and safety of our athletes, and the credibility of the global aquatics community." The Enhanced Games have set their inaugural competition for May 2026 in Las Vegas, with swimming, athletics and weightlifting on the agenda. Weinstein, 73, is accused of raping an actress and assaulting two women in what prosecutors have called a pattern in which the onetime Hollywood kingmaker used his power and influence to lure in victims and then keep them silent. The Miramax studio co-founder has pleaded not guilty and has denied ever having non-consensual sex with anyone. Weinstein, suffering from a litany of health problems, was present throughout the trial in a wheelchair. Weinstein already will likely spend the rest of his life in prison due to a 16-year prison sentence for rape in California. Weinstein was convicted of rape by a jury in a previous trial in Manhattan in February 2020, but the New York Court of Appeals in April 2024 threw out the conviction and ordered a new trial, citing errors by the trial judge. Weinstein had been serving a 23-year sentence in a prison in upstate Rome, New York, when the conviction was overturned. That conviction had been a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. Weinstein has been held at New York City's Rikers Island jail since his conviction was overturned. He has had several health scares while being held at Rikers, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. Prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg have portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them. Weinstein's lawyer Arthur Aidala rejected that characterization during his opening statement to the jury, saying the Oscar-winning producer had "mutually beneficial" relationships with his accusers, who ended up with auditions and other show business opportunities. Bragg's office originally accused Weinstein of sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013, charges he was convicted of in the first trial. For the retrial, prosecutors added a new charge that Weinstein assaulted another woman in Manhattan in 2002. Leverkusen sign Dutch goalkeeper Flekken from Brentford
Bayer Leverkusen have signed Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Premier League Brentford on a three-year contract, the Bundesliga club said on Tuesday. The 31-year-old will return to Germany after two seasons at Brentford, where he made 74 appearances in the Premier League. "Mark Flekken possesses a wide range of skills that a goalkeeper in modern top-flight football must possess," Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes said. "Mark exudes an impressive physical presence; from a footballing perspective, he has certainly been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the past two years."
