What MotoGP return to Buenos Aires means for future F1 Argentine Grand Prix plans
MotoGP has much more recent history in Argentina, having held a race in the country in most years since 2014, but 700 miles north-west at a circuit in the small city of Termas de Rio Hondo. But you have to go all the way back to 1998 for F1's last visit to the country, a race won by Michael Schumacher.
There was talk of a comeback around 15 years ago, but a return to Argentina never materialised. Bernie Ecclestone, still in charge of F1's commercial rights at that point and famously not one to mince his words, said the sport was "open to racing in Argentina when I can deal with serious people" at a government level.
Jorge Macri, chief of government of Buenos Aires, thinks he is a serious person. Which will be entirely necessarily given that, even though Ecclestone and his influence are long gone, F1's current operators Liberty Media are receiving so much global interest from new markets right now that only extremely thorough, long-term and sustainable plans for events will get their attention these days.
And Macri has made it clear that he plans to present on. Commenting on MotoGP's planned return to the Argentine capital from 2027, he said: "Starting in October, we will undertake a comprehensive renovation of the circuit, which includes work on the track, pits, paddock and safety zones, incorporating the latest technology. With this investment in infrastructure, security, logistics, and connectivity, we will bring the venue up to international standards."
That is vital – the Autodromo de Buenos Aires Oscar y Juan Galvez is currently an FIA Grade 4 certified track, and Grade 1 would be required for it to be eligible to host F1 races. And Macri made it clear that is the long-term ambition, adding: "This is the first step toward applying for the City of Buenos Aires to host Formula 1."
But just because a country or promoter wants to get involved in F1, it certainly doesn't mean they can. There is already a packed 24-race annual calendar with Madrid hosting a race for the first time next year and Thailand poised to become the next country to host a pit stop on the sport's global tour every year.
Then you add in F1's publicly-acknowledged desire to return to Africa – not that a deal on that front looks likely to be struck any time soon – and other proposed new venues in Chicago, Osaka, Qiddiya in Saudi Arabia, among others. There is already a lengthy queue and, realistically, only Thailand has a chance of getting their project green-lighted and into action before 2030 at the earliest.
But where, specifically, is Argentina in its bid to bring F1 back onto its shores and capitalise on the massive interest in the country in the fortunes of Alpine racer Franco Colapinto? Relatively, the answer is pretty much nowhere. Enticing MotoGP back to that circuit in the Buenos Aires suburbs is a positive step, but that's about it in terms of its efforts to get back involved in F1 right now.
F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali met with an Argentine delegation in Sao Paulo over the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend last November, but those were little more than preliminary talks. More an expression of interest – Argentina wants back in, but there is a long road ahead before that dream becomes reality, if it ever does.
And right now there's no guarantee that Colapinto will still be on the F1 grid in a couple of months, never mind years, given his tenuous situation at Alpine right now. If he were to drop off the grid again, we will soon see just how tied to the 22-year-old's fortunes Argentina's interest in hosting an F1 race again really is.

George Russell on verge of landing £30m-a-year mega deal with Mercedes as F1 rival Verstappen set to stay at Red Bull
GEORGE RUSSELL is on the brink of a new £30million-a-year Mercedes deal with Max Verstappen set to stay at Red Bull for another year. The British driver has been hashing out talks with Merc over the last few weeks, with just the final details to be fine tuned. 2 2 Toto Wolff's team were keen for an agreement to be made after the final race in Hungary this weekend before the summer break. It is likely to be later though as Russell's team go over the details of the new deal. Mercedes had been keeping tabs on Verstappen but the Dutchman is set to stay put at Red Bull for 2026. Following Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix he is now unable to activate a release clause that relied on him being outside the top three by the summer break. The four-time world champion or Mercedes could still buy himself out of his deal that runs until 2028 - but it would cost a pretty penny and this option is not on Verstappen's radar. Verstappen is third in the standings 28 points ahead of George Russell in fourth after winning the sprint race in Spa and coming fourth in Sunday's Grand Prix. The Dutchman and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton are the highest earners on the grid on around £60m-a-year. Meanwhile Russell's new deal will see him roughly on par with McLaren's Lando Norris and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Mercedes suffered a disappointing run in Spa with Russell finishing fifth and Kimi Anontelli coming in 16th. Frustrated Russell slammed the team's weekend and said crunch talks would be held this week to get to the bottom of the team's woes. Nico Rosberg in frosty exchange with Jos Verstappen over Christian Horner after Red Bull sacking He said: 'We really need to understand what is going on and why we've taken such a step backwards because these conditions (in Spa) are ideal for us and our car. 'It's been the worst performance of the season so we're going to have a big sit-down this week and try and figure it out. 'We need to sit down as a team. It may be as simple as reserving back to some of the old changes we've made. But in F1 it's never that simple. 'The car isn't feeling as nice to drive at the moment as it once did. Lacking rear stability. 'Kimi and I are collectively making more mistakes because the car is more challenging to drive. It seems quite strange how we've gone so far backwards.'

Why Max Verstappen can't join Mercedes despite Red Bull exit clause
If Max Verstappen was hoping to leave Red Bull for Mercedes in 2026, he'll be disappointed as that option is no longer on the table. The future of the four-time Formula 1 champion has been up in the air for some time, with Red Bull unable to build a car to challenge for the title this season. While Verstappen has still picked up two wins this year, following Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix he is 81 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, with McLaren teammate Lando Norris the only one who can realistically challenge him. Speculation has ramped up in recent weeks after Mercedes boss Toto Wolff revealed he was in talks with the Dutchman over a blockbuster move to the Silver Arrows. Moreover, team principal Christian Horner was dismissed from his role by Red Bull, though Verstappen has since said his exit will not have any bearing on his own future. Throughout the entire saga, it has been known that there is a performance-related release clause in Verstappen's contract which runs until 2028. The 27-year-old was allowed to end his contract early and sign for a rival team, if he was outside of the top-three in the standings come F1's summer break. Verstappen is currently third in the championship, with fourth-placed George Russell 28 points behind and this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix is the final race before the break However, with 25 the maximum number of points up for grabs at the Hungaroring, Verstappen is guaranteed to remain in the top-three, so his release clause will not become active. More Trending This does not rule out the transfer entirely, as the driver or Mercedes could buy out the remainder of his Red Bull contract, but given the huge expense required to do so, it is not under consideration. Instead, Mercedes are expected to stick with their current line-up of Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli, both of whom are out of contract at the end of 2025. According to the Daily Mail, an announcement is not expected before the Hungarian Grand Prix but Russell is very close to putting pen to paper on a new multi-year, £30million-a-season deal. After a strong start to his F1 career, Antonelli's form has dropped off, scoring points in just one of the last seven races, but the 18-year-old's potential is clear to see and he should keep his seat. Russell finished fifth in Belgium but was far from happy with the pace of his Mercedes car, telling Sky Sports: 'It was pretty underwhelming, to be honest. 'Because we tend to favour the cooler conditions. So we couldn't have really asked for better weather for us. But we've just had no pace recently. We need to sit down, all of us. 'We're going to have a big meeting this week with all the designers and engineers. To sort of understand the decisions we've made in recent weeks or months. And why we've gone backwards. So hoping for some improvements in Hungary. 'P5 was probably flattering the real pace of the car, so I'm at least happy we got the maximum possible. We made a clear change of direction a couple of months ago, and I think it's been since that point we've taken a step backwards. 'It sometimes takes a few races to understand what the real reasons are for that lack of pace, but clearly it seems that we need to revert back to what we had earlier in the season.' Football fans rage over TNT Sports price hike just weeks before the Premier League starts – act now to avoid increase
You'll have to pay £3 extra but there's a way to keep your bill down if you're prepared to lose some shows OWN GOAL Football fans rage over TNT Sports price hike just weeks before the Premier League starts – act now to avoid increase Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BRITS itching for the next Premier League season to kick off have been dealt a fresh blow to their pockets with subscription prices rising again. TNT Sports has announced a £3 monthly bill hike starting today. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 There is a way to avoid the price hike - but you'll have to lose some shows Credit: getty 3 That means the existing package will now cost £33.99 a month instead of £30.99. TNT Sports will show 52 Premier League matches during the 2025/26 season. Their first is Aston Villa v Newcastle United on August 16. Meanwhile, Sky Sports will broadcast the most with the rights to 215 games. "Taking the absolute p*** now," one frustrated viewer raged on X. "What a bargain hey? I'll be cancelling," another raged. The move comes as part of a shake-up to the Discovery+ packages, with a new tier now available. This provides a way to keep the old TNT Sports subscription price of £30.99 but it will mean sacrificing some of the content you had access to previously. And you'll need to manually switch within your account to advantage if that's of interest. In an email to customers, the broadcaster said: "Thank you for being a discovery+ subscriber. Premier League's most expensive season ticket prices revealed with Man Utd just seventh highest "We want to let you know about changes to your subscription plan. "On your next billing date on or after 28 August 2025, your monthly discovery+ Premium (incl. TNT Sports) subscription price will increase to £33.99/month. "Your plan name will also change to 'TNT Sports & Entertainment'." So how can you save? Previously, there were only two tiers, Discovery+ Basic which had no sport at all and remains at £3.99 per month. Meanwhile Discovery+ Premium had all that plus TNT Sports. Wedged between the pair is now a third option, Discovery+ TNT Sports. This essentially provides access to everything TNT Sports has to offer, including Premier League and UEFA Champions League, Autumn Nations Series and Moto GP. But you won't be able to watch Discovery+'s non-sport content available for £30.99 per month with reality from TLC, documentaries from Discovery Channel and more. If you're not fussed about the non-sport shows, it might be worthwhile downgrading to this to avoid the price hike. Premier League fixtures in full 15/08/2025 20:00 Liverpool v A.F.C.
