Grammy winner Dame Cleo Laine dies aged 97
Jazz singer Dame Cleo Laine has died at the age of 97.
The star, known best for her incredible vocal range, performed with legends the like of Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles and became the first British singer to win a Grammy Award. The Mirror reports that she began her career with her late husband and composer John Dankworth in the 1950s.
The couple went on to collaborate many times together over the years. They created the Stables artis centre in Buckinghamshire, with its chairman David Meadowcroft sharing a statement today over the sad news of her death.
He said: "Dame Cleo was a remarkable performer who was loved by audiences around the world and her commitment to ensuring young people had access to great music and music education will continue through the work of The Stables."
Laine was born on October 28 1927 in Southall, Middlesex, to labourer and busker Alexander Sylvan Campbell and Minnie Bullock, a farmer's daughter.
Most of her childhood was spent in Southall, however, the family moved frequently.
She began singing and dancing lessons at an early age, but went on to work as an apprentice for a variety of jobs, including as a hat-trimmer and librarian.
Laine managed to successfully audition when she was 24 for a small group with husband-to-be Dankworth's small group. She then performed with a number of his big bands until 1958, the year they wed.
She starred in a number of theatre productions through the 50s and 60s, including as the lead in Barry Reckord's Flesh to a Tiger at London's Royal Court Theatre and the title role in The Barren One.
In 1971, she landed her role as Julie in Wendy Toye's production of Show Boat at the Adelphi Theatre in London in 1971.

EXCLUSIVE: Destination X star James has opened up about his sudden exit from the BBC One show, revealing that he was left in floods of tears in an unaired moment Tonight's episode of Destination X saw the show brutally dump two contestants from the cross-country coach, with James and Ben being the next stars to leave the BBC show. "I'm quite a tough person and it's quite a lot to get me to show my emotions. That just ripped me to pieces. You don't have your phone, you don't have any means of what you would class as a normal life comfort so you are constantly living in this sense of unknown." He added: "You don't know where you are. You really don't have much control over what you eat because you're obviously constantly travelling and you're in a bubble of unfamiliarity with everything. It just climaxed with me going home." Despite his emotional exit, James said that he wouldn't change his experience "for the world". He said: "I went into the whole experience with the mindset that I'm so over the moon that I even get the opportunity to do it so regardless as to any outcome, it was a win for me." While living on the show's bus may have looked cramped, James admitted that the contestants each got a luxurious night's sleep. "I was just so thankful that they didn't skimp on the bedding because let me tell you right now - that bed was so comfy," he said. James added that he's also made friends for life despite his short time on the show. "I'll 110% keep in touch with all of them," he said. "We watched the first episode together before it went out and it was so nice to see everyone again. You all leave at slightly different times so you've got disjointed parts of a story. It all feels a bit like a dream because you're sharply whisked away and then sharply whisked back."

'Most harrowing film ever made' still available to stream as Netflix pulls it
A brutal psychological thriller described as one of the most harrowing films ever made – and which sparked walkouts with its brutal content – has been removed from Netflix. However, it still has a streaming home for viewers in the UK. The award-winning 2018 film The Nightingale was part of the group of titles Netflix removed from its vast UK back catalogue during the fist few days of August, which also included movies from the Final Destination franchise and Shrek trilogy, alongside White House Down. But for those wanting to seek out the film described as 'the most shocking of the year' and hard to watch, it is available on Amazon Prime Video for subscribers free of charge. A disturbing period-set drama, The Nightingale takes place in 1825 and follows young Irish convict Clare (Aisling Franciosi) as she hunts a British officer, played by Sam Claflin, to extract revenge for the unspeakable acts of violence he committed against her and her family. Strictly Come Dancing's Gorka Marquez pulls out of show as fans left devastated
The Strictly Come Dancing fan favourite took to Instagram to make a huge career announcement. Strictly Come Dancing star, Gorka Marquez, has revealed that he won't be competing with a partner on the BBC show this year. The professional dancer, 34, will also be missing for a number of weeks from the series. Gorka, who has been a staple on Strictly since he joined the cast back in 2016, will now be taking a step back from the series but fans don't need to get too disappointed as the star is set to return towards the final. Announcing the news in an Instagram post to his 973k followers, Gorka revealed that he'll be taking on a role as a judge on the Spanish version of the show instead from September onwards. He took to Instagram to announce the news, writing: "I am happy to announce that I will be back for season two of BAILANDO CON LAS ESTRELLAS as a judge from September." Explaining why there will be a change in his role on Strictly this year, he added: "Due to the filming dates this means that I won't be competing with a partner this year in Strictly but I will be a part of lots of the group numbers and will be back for final weeks of the Show to support the rest of my fellow pros and their celebrities in what is going to be an AMAZING SERIES." Gorka concluded the post by thanking fans for all of "the love and support" as he added:"And remember! Keep dancing!!!" Fans raced to the comments section as they reacted to the news. One upset supporter wrote: "Nooooo. Whilst I am happy you are a judge in Spain I am sad you are not in the UK Strictly." Another agreed: "I so agree Gorka is the reason why I watch it, so sad." The Strictly professionals were spotted arriving for rehearsals earlier this week amid the BBC launching an investigation into the show's cocaine scandal. It's believed that other individuals have also brought forward allegations of drug consumption on the show. It was reported earlier this week that the BBC is ready to offer the two stars a rehabilitation programme following revelations of cocaine use.
