Fluminense knock out Inter to face Al Hilal's challenge for spot in Club World Cup semi-final

Gulf Today02-07-2025
Fluminense sent Inter Milan packing from the Club World Cup on Monday with a 2-0 win in Charlotte that took the Brazilian side through to the quarter-finals.
German Cano's header from close range gave Fluminense an early lead and they then withstood an onslaught from the Italian side in the second half before substitute Hercules sealed their victory late on.
The Rio de Janeiro outfit, who qualified for the Club World Cup thanks to their Copa Libertadores triumph in 2023, become the second Brazilian side to make the last eight after Palmeiras had already sealed their quarter-final spot.
Captained by 40-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva, 'Flu' will now go to Orlando for a tie on Friday against Al Hilal, who stunned Manchester City 4-3.
It is the latest victory for a Brazilian team against prestigious European opposition at the tournament in the US, after Botafogo defeated PSG and Flamengo got the better of Chelsea in the group stage.
Inter came to the US off the back of their 5-0 defeat by PSG in the UEFA Champions League final at the end of May and with a new coach in Cristian Chivu.
They did not fully convince during the group stage despite topping their section and they found themselves trailing inside three minutes before only just over 20,000 fans at the Bank of America Stadium on another hot afternoon.
A cross from the Fluminense right by Jhon Arias took a deflection off Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni and the ball then bounced awkwardly before veteran Argentine striker Cano arrived to head in through the legs of goalkeeper Yann Sommer from close range.
Ignacio thought he had made it 2-0 before the interval, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Sommer then tipped a fine curling strike by Arias around the post just after the hour mark, before Inter began to turn up the pressure in an attempt to avoid exiting the competition.
Stefan de Vrij prodded wide from close range after captain Lautaro Martinez had headed down a cross, and the latter then saw a fine shot on the turn from the edge of the box come back off an upright.
Martinez had also been denied by Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio moments earlier, and confirmation that it would not be Inter's day arrived in stoppage time.
On as a substitute, Hercules pounced on a falling ball and drove into the box before firing low into the corner.
Federico Dimarco then hit the woodwork at the other end as Fluminense held out for the victory to keep South American hopes of glory at the tournament firmly alive.
Al Hilal oust City in extra time: Marcos Leonardo scored his second goal of the match in the 112th minute to give Al Hilal a 4-3 upset victory over Manchester City in Orlando, sending the Saudi Arabian side into the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.
Malcom and Kalidou Koulibaly also scored for Al Hilal, who got 10 saves from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden were the goal-scorers for Manchester City.
The decisive goal came after Sergej Milinkovic's header was stopped by Ederson for the Manchester City goalie's second and final save of the match.
The ball then hit off Leonardo to the left front of the goal line, and he knocked the ball into the open net with his right foot to give Al Hilal the lead.
Koulibaly scored on a header to give Al Hilal a 3-2 lead in the fourth minute of extra time.
Al Hilal's Ruben Neves took a corner kick, and Koulibaly leaped and flicked the ball to the left of Ederson.
Manchester City had two strong chances late in the second half of regulation time.
Off a corner kick in the 84th minute, Manuel Akanji sent a header that hit off the right goalpost. Haaland was there for a potential tap-in, but Al Hilal's Ali Lajami cleared the ball before it crossed the line.

Al Ain, Al Jazira's records under threat as stage set for new Pro League season

For over a decade, Al Ain and Al Jazira have stood as pillars of dominance in the ADNOC Pro League, setting benchmarks that no team has yet managed to eclipse. As the 2025-26 campaign gets underway, the stage is set for a season brimming with ambition, as several contenders eye the chance to etch their names into history by toppling these enduring milestones. Al Ain boast two of the league's most iconic achievements: the longest winning streak in the ADNOC Pro League history, with 10 consecutive victories, and the highest points tally in a single season — an imposing 74 points during their triumphant 2012-13 campaign. Not to be outdone, Al Jazira's legacy is equally formidable. The Pride of Abu Dhabi hold the record for the most wins in a single season — 22 triumphs in 2016-17 — along with the highest points total for a title-winning side, amassing 68 points in that same memorable year. This season, the challenge to Al Ain's unmatched winning run is as fierce as ever. Four sides — Shabab Al Ahli, Al Wahda, Al Wasl, and Al Jazira — are already tied on nine straight victories in past campaigns, just one short of equaling the mark. Any of them, including Al Ain themselves, could push the bar even higher in the coming months. Countdown to the 9,000th Goal: The stage is set, the anticipation is mounting, and history is just around the corner. As the 2025-26 ADNOC Pro League kicks off this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, the league stands just seven goals away from reaching one of its most iconic milestones — the 9,000th goal in the professional era. Since the dawn of professionalism in the 2008-09 season, the league has witnessed a parade of unforgettable strikes, each etched into the rich tapestry of UAE football. It all began on Sept. 19, 2008, when Brazilian marksman Andre Dias of Al Ain wrote the opening chapter by netting the very first goal of the new era. Two years later, on Sept. 26, 2010, Guinean forward Ismael Bangoura of Al Nasr struck the century mark with the 100th goal. The 200th arrived courtesy of Frenchman Michel Laurent Ndri of Al Shaab on Nov. 19, 2012, before Brazilian powerhouse Grafite of Shabab Al Ahli brought up the 300th on May 2, 2014. The milestones kept coming. Dawood Ali of Al Shaab fired in the 400th on Feb. 18, 2016, while Egyptian star Hussein El Shahat of Al Ain celebrated the 500th on Feb. 3, 2018. The 600th was struck by Brazilian Dudu of Khorfakkan on New Year's Day 2020, followed by legend Ali Mabkhout, who netted the 700th on Feb. 15, 2022. Most recently, on Dec. 2, 2023, Kabasele claimed the 800th in style. Now, as the new season kicks off, the spotlight turns to one burning question: Which player will seize the moment, etch their name into the record books, and deliver goal number 9,000? Anticipation is high for a season packed with excitement, intensity, and fierce competition in pursuit of the coveted title. Over the years, numerous stars have etched their names in golden letters in the league's history since the professional era began. Others are now looking to secure their place in the record books with standout numbers. Kodjo Laba is just eight goal contributions away from reaching 150 in the league (118 goals, 24 assists). Caio Lucas needs 18 more goal contributions to hit the same 150-mark milestone (78 goals, 54 assists). Omar Khribin needs 19 goals to reach 100 goals in the league. Fabio Lima has already tallied an impressive 239 goal contributions in 243 matches (176 goals, 63 assists), and with his consistent form, that number is poised to grow this season. Ali Khaseif, Al Jazira's veteran goalkeeper and the league's all-time appearance leader with 356 matches, also holds the record for the most clean sheets (101). The UAE Pro League has officially released tickets for the opening matchweek of the 2025–2026 season.

Sinner advances, Sabalenka survives Raducanu scare

Jannik Sinner ignored power failure interruptions and a blaring alarm to defeat Gabriel Diallo 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) on Monday's day of distractions at the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open. The top seeded defending champion got down to business against a Canadian ranked 35th who was plagued by eight first-set double-faults and 49 unforced errors in the match as he faced the best in the world. Sinner recovered smoothly from an early break down and had his hands full on his way into the fourth round, sending over an ace on match point after saving a set point in the tiebreaker. Play was stopped briefly with Sinner leading 4-2 as the audio portion of the electronic line-calling system suddenly failed. Earlier, both players had to deal with flickering LED screens directly behind them courtside. The pair agreed to soldier on without the system, with the chair umpire temporarily relaying the algorithm's decisions — which he saw on his chair's tablet — to the players when necessary as a re-boot was undertaken. That minor malfunction came two hours after the chaos of a widespread power outage which completely stopped play around the grounds for 75 minutes. Five minutes later, with Sinner leading 1-0 in the second set after winning the first, the chaos continued with an alarm going off somewhere in the stadium and play suspended for the third time. Sinner and Diallo continued to carry on with the distraction blaring somewhat faintly in the background before it finally halted after another game. Sinner polished off victory for his 23rd consecutive hardcourt win in under two hours. 'It was a very difficult day at the office,' the Italian said. 'You have to find the balance against these big servers. I struggled with that at times today. 'But I need tough matches like this, I'm happy I got one before the Grand Slam... I'm happy about today, but I know I can do things better.' US fourth seed Taylor Fritz endured a one-hour delay after the first set before defeating Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 for a 21st win in 25 matches. 'I can play better, but there has been no time to really train and get ready,' Fritz said. 'I'm looking forward to fine tuning the week before the US Open.' Compatriot Frances Tiafoe advanced past Ugo Humbert of France 6-4, 6-4 in 82 minutes and lines up next against Holger Rune, who beat Alex Michelsen 7-6 (7/4), 6-3. In the WTA event, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka fought through a three-hour battle to hold off an inspired Emma Raducanu 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/5) for a fourth-round spot in a repeat of a victory from the Wimbledon third round in July. Defending champion Sabalenka endured a struggle but finished with two aces in the closing stages. 'I'm happy to get through this difficult match,' Sabalenka said. 'I just hope tomorrow is a day off. I need time to recover from such a great battle.' British number one Raducanu survived a 25-minute eighth game of the final set, which went to 13 deuces, with Raducanu saving four break points before finally holding for 4-all and eventually into a tiebreaker. Sabalenka squeezed out victory with a sixth ace for 5-4 in the breaker and delivered her seventh on her second match point to win in three hours and nine minutes. 'It was all about momentum,' Sabalenka said. 'I took some risks at the end, went for crazy shots, went to the net.' Sabalenka is bidding for her 10th trophy at the 1000 level and second this season after winning at Madrid. 'I can take lessons from this,' Raducanu said. 'With work and practice I think I can hold my level higher for longer. 'She's world number one for a reason. We had a three-hour match and I felt pretty good out there for the most part.' Raducanu was called out by the chair umpire on unauthorized conversations with new Spanish coach Francisco Roig. Australian Open champion Madison Keys lost just four games in defeating Japan's Aoi Ito. Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro ousted American wild card Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-1 and faces Sabalenka on Wednesday. Agence France-Presse

Real, Barca renew rivalry as new Spanish League season set to begin

Real Madrid are aiming to wrestle the Spanish League title back from champions Barcelona as the La Liga season begins on Friday. Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid were dismantled on a regular basis by rivals Barcelona last season, who triumphed in all four meetings between the sides as well as winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. The Italian departed, to be replaced by former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, who has work on his hands to help revive them despite a squad boasting numerous star names including Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. Real were thrashed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Club World Cup semi-finals and they remain to be seen how playing in the competition will impact squad fatigue and preparation for the new season. Defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen give Alonso more options than Ancelotti had last season, along with Dani Carvajal's return from a long-term knee injury. However Real could be short in midfield after Luka Modric's departure and with Jude Bellingham set to be out until October after shoulder surgery. Can Yamal maintain level?: Barcelona excelled in attack last season and much of that was down to skilful teenage star Lamine Yamal. The Spain international turned 18 in July and has already made over 100 appearances for the club, becoming the Catalans' key player going forward. If Flick's side are to defend their title and push on for more in the Champions League, as they prepare to return to their rebuilt Camp Nou stadium, the winger maintaining his world-class level is essential. Yamal took former Barca all-time great Lionel Messi's number 10 shirt in July and insists he is forging his own path at the club. After helping his country triumph at Euro 2024, Yamal will also have his eye on the 2026 World Cup next summer. If new arrival Marcus Rashford hits the ground running coach Hansi Flick may be able to give Yamal the occasional rest, moving Raphinha over to the right. Atletico reshuffle: After a poor end to the previous campaign and a surprise group stage Club World Cup elimination, Diego Simeone's Atletico took action this summer. They brought in playmaker Alex Baena from Villarreal and Real Betis' Johnny Cardoso to provide new midfield impetus, as well as several other new recruits. Long-time Atletico players Angel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul, Saul Niguez depart, among others. Despite the strength of their squad and Simeone's reputation as one of the best coaches in the world -- and the highest paid in Europe -- Atletico have won just three trophies in the last decade, La Liga in 2021 and both the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2018. Questions over whether Simeone has taken them as far as he can will quickly rear up if things start to go wrong. Cazorla's Oviedo Spanish midfield maestro Santi Cazorla penned a new one-year deal with Real Oviedo for their return to Spain's top flight after a 24-year absence. It is a miraculous finale for the 40-year-old -- a member of the Spain side that won the 2008 and 2012 Euro titles -- who came close to losing his right leg due to his ankle bone going soft when he was at Arsenal. Former Arsenal playmaker Cazorla had a key role in the team's rise to La Liga, when he re-joined them he initially offered to play for nothing but was obliged under the rules to accept the minimum wage, and in their first match they take on his former side Villarreal. Whether he will be able to have as much of an impact this season is debatable but Cazorla will get a fine send-off at grounds around the country when Oviedo hit the road. Fresh starts: Real Sociedad and Sevilla have made new managerial appointments as they try to bounce back from poor 2024-25 campaigns. After seven years at the helm Real's Imanol Alguacil stepped down and has been replaced by reserve team coach Sergio Francisco. Meanwhile Matias Almeyda takes over at a Sevilla side which finished 17th last season and sacked coach Francesco Garcia Pimienta in April. Both clubs have been among the strongest in Spain over the past decade but have fallen from grace. Agence France-Presse
