Kyle Manzardo's homers lift Guardians over Rockies
Manzardo had three RBIs in his second career two-homer game, giving him 18 blasts in his first full season in the majors. He delivered a two-run shot in the third inning against Tanner Gordon (2-3) and a solo homer off Jimmy Herget three frames later.
Cleveland has split the first two games of the series and is 7-5 since the All-Star break, which leaves the Guardians on the periphery of the American League wild-card chase.
Guardians starter Logan Allen (7-9) matched his career high by going seven innings. The left-hander allowed two runs -- solo homers to Jordan Beck in the fourth and Michael Toglia in the seventh -- along with eight hits and one walk while striking out three.
Allen threw 114 pitches, the most by a Cleveland pitcher since Aaron Civale also had 114 on May 19, 2021. Civale was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Manzardo two years ago when the Guardians fell out of playoff contention.
The Guardians built a 7-0 lead in three innings against Gordon, who gave up six earned runs on eight hits. The right-hander struck out two and walked a pair in his fifth appearance for Colorado stretched across three callups from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Cleveland scored two runs in the first on Arias' bad-hop single past shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, which brought home Steven Kwan and Daniel Schneemann. It tacked on a run in the second when David Fry led off with a single and moved to second when Gordon committed a unique balk -- falling off the mound without releasing the ball when his left plant foot slipped. Fry scored on Brayan Rocchio's single when left fielder Beck committed an error.
Kyle Farmer accounted for Colorado's final run with a homer in the ninth against Tim Herrin. The Rockies have the worst record in the majors at 28-79, including 21-46 under interim manager Warren Schaeffer.

Amateur English golfer, 22, equals staggering course record of Masters champion
Max Hopkins, who works as a part-time barman alongside his exploits on the course, has stunned the golfing world by shooting a record equalling low round at a prestigious course that has hosted the Open A part-time barman has stunned the golf world by equalling the record for a round at one of the UK's most famous courses. Max Hopkins, who works pulling pints at a pub in the Hertfordshire town of Bishop's Stortford, shot an incredible nine under par 63 at the historic Royal Liverpool. It equalled the same score shot by Masters and US Open winner Jon Rahm at the 2023 Open Championship. Hopkins was taking part in the English Men's Amateur Championship when he shot his sensational round at the course where Tiger Woods won the Open in 2006 - it has hosted 13 Open tournaments. It was a far cry from pulling pints at The Star pub, in Bridge St, Stortford That's where Hopkins can be found working as his part-time job to fund his attempts to make it as a professional in the world of golf. Hopkins, 22, said: 'It didn't really sink in at the time. Towards the end of the round, as it was going so well, I did start to think what the course record was? 'It was one of those days where everything went well. It was certainly a very proud moment when I realised I'd equalled the score of someone like Jon Rahm. "I only found out the significance of the score when I finished and I saw the chat in a golf WhatsApp group of my friends back in Bishop's Stortford.' His girlfriend Sophie Kelsell, 22, was caddying for him over the week. The couple travel to Holland for another tournament next week. He added: 'I work in the pub to earn some money to make ends meet and to try and give me a chance of making it a pro. "It's difficult but it's just the way it it. I've got no sponsorship at the moment. I can't thank my girlfriend and all my family enough for all their support. His dad Peter said: "The dedication young golfers have to show these days to try and make it is incredible. "From equalling the record of a course like Liverpool to back working behind the bar of the Star and he always gives his all. It's tough for youngsters today and we're all very proud of Max." Hopkins, a former pupil at Hockerill Anglo-European College, Bishop's Stortford and Leventhorpe School, Sawbridgeworth, is a member of Bishop's Stortford Golf Club. He started playing when he was just two-years-old and was a club member when he was six. He reached the final of the tournament where he was eventually beaten by Romford's Henry Styles in the 36-hole climax to the centenary championship.

Cancer-stricken Guardians pitcher Nic Enright gets first career save midway through treatment
Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Nic Enright got his first major league save on Monday as the 28-year-old rookie awaits a much bigger save opportunity this November: His final cancer treatment. 'He was almost crying on the field just now,' Guardians manager Stephen Vogt told reporters afterwards. 'If you read his story, it´s pretty inspirational.' Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2022, Enright nonetheless fought his way to the majors to make his debut on May 25 and has since posted an impressive 2.01 earned-run average over 19 appearances. Now, with All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on paid leave amid a sports gambling probe, Enright has been asked to handle high-leverage situations, such as Monday's extra-innings battle against the Mets in Queens. Entering with a 7-5 lead in the 10th inning, Enright surrendered one unearned run on an RBI-single to Brett Baty but managed to get Luis Torrens to fly out to right to end the game. 'I definitely held my breath as I saw [Guardians right fielder Nolan Jones] kind of keep running,' Enright told reporters. 'But I had faith. As he kind of got closer to the wall, I realized it was losing steam.' Enright was originally selected by the Guardians out of Virginia Tech in the 20th round of the 2019 amateur draft. He'd be picked up by the Miami Marlins in the Rule 5 draft in 2022, only to be diagnosed with Hodkin Lymphoma 15 days later. Since then, he's undergone several rounds of immunotherapy and other treatments, while continuing to work towards his dream of pitching in the big leagues. 'I made the decision when I was diagnosed in 2022 with Hodgkin lymphoma that I wasn´t going to let that define my life and dictate how I was going to go about my life,' Enright said. 'It´s something where, for anyone else who is going through anything similar, [it shows] I haven´t just holed up in my house and felt sorry for myself this whole time.' Enrich was ultimately cut by the Marlins in 2023 before returning to the Guardians in May of that year and quietly turning himself into one of the better relief pitchers in Triple-A Columbus. Despite shoulder issues, he posted a miniscule 1.06 ERA in 16 appearances for Columbus in 2024 and was equally effective this season before being called up to the Guardians in May. Among Enright's keepsakes from Monday are the ball from the final out, his jersey and the lineup card, all of which he plans to set aside at the home he shares with his wife, Erin, whom he credits along with his other family members for their support. 'These last couple of years, especially, I've gone through a lot of adversity and just everything that's gone on,' Enright said, as quoted by The Associated Press. 'And so for me, it's being able to reflect on those in these moments. I think that helps being able to slow the game down. Because it hasn't exactly been a red-carpet rollout for my career trajectory.'

Pete Alonso eyes Mets' homer mark in matchup with Guardians
August 5 - Pete Alonso inched closer to the New York Mets' all-time home run record on Monday. The Cleveland Guardians' unlikely playoff push took another small step forward, too. The Guardians will look to clinch a series win on Tuesday when they visit the Mets in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set. Left-hander Logan Allen (7-9, 4.06 ERA) is slated to start against Mets right-hander Clay Holmes (9-6, 3.45). Gabriel Arias homered and finished with four RBIs on Monday for the Guardians, who overcame squandering a five-run lead to edge the Mets 7-6 in 10 innings. Alonso socked a three-run shot in the sixth inning, the 251st homer of his career, one shy of Darryl Strawberry's record Mets total. The long ball began the comeback for the Mets, who tied the game in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. Alonso, who hit an RBI single in the eighth, struck out in the ninth against Cade Smith before Jeff McNeil lined out. The Guardians scored twice in the 10th, when automatic runner Daniel Schneemann came home from second on a throwing error by third baseman Brett Baty before Arias added a sacrifice fly. The chaotic win improved the Guardians to 17-7 since July 7 -- the third-best record in the majors in that span behind only the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox. Cleveland is 2 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, who are tied for the last two American League wild-card spots. The Guardians were seven games out of the last playoff spot through July 6. Cleveland has mounted its push despite the absence of starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz and closer Emmanuel Clase, both of whom were placed on the restricted list last month while they are the subjects of gambling investigations by Major League Baseball. "We just need to get in," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "We just want to get in the dance and give ourselves a chance. I love the way our guys are playing. We just need to continue to be us every single day." The Mets might be in the process of making their path to the playoffs more difficult than it appeared nearly two months ago. New York had the best record in baseball at 45-24 through June 12 but is just 18-26 since. The Mets occupy the second National League wild-card position and are 1 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East -- matching their largest deficit since July 2. Alonso took solace in the comeback by the Mets, who took a 12-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday and didn't get a runner past second base in the first five innings Monday against Slade Cecconi. "I think it'd be more concerning if we just kind of got blown out 5-0," Alonso said. "But for us to kind of battle back and keep fighting, that's a lot of good signs." Allen earned a win in his most recent start, when he gave up two runs over a season-high seven innings as the Guardians beat the Colorado Rockies 10-4 on July 29. He has yet to face the Mets. Holmes took a defeat on Wednesday after allowing four runs (two earned) over a season-low 3 2/3 innings as the Mets fell 5-0 to the visiting San Diego Padres. Holmes is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA and three saves in 10 appearances (all in relief) against the Guardians. --Field Level Media
