Richard Hammond's career through the decades
By Summer Raemason
Richard was born in Birmingham in 1970 and studied photography, as well as television production.
He kickstarted his career in broadcasting at BBC Radio York.
This saw him land another role at BBC Radio Cumbria, Leeds and Lancashire, before he left in 1995 to follow his passion for cars.
He always dreamt of presenting motoring TV shows but initially took a job working in PR after leaving the BBC.
He was involved in corporate events for clients including the Ferrari Owners' Club and Renault Sport.
In 1998 he earned his debut motoring TV job on, hosting Motorweek on Satellite channel Men & Motors.
This opened up many more avenues on screen and eventually he found his way to presenting Top Gear in 2002.
The household show garnered up to six million viewers at its peak.
While filming with Top Gear Richard crashed in a jet-powered traveling at over 300 mph.
The dad-of-two is one of the only people to have ever survived such a horror smash.
Hammond has also hosted science and nature programmes including Should I Worry About? on BBC One.
Other TV projects for the BBC included being the face of Battle of the Geeks, Time Commanders and featuring as a team captain on Petrol Heads.
He also presented ITV's eponymous Richard Hammond's Five O'Clock Show and Sky One's Brainiac.
"Our marriage is coming to end, but we've had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters.
"We will always be in each other's lives and are proud of the family we created.

"We won't be commenting further and sincerely hope that our privacy and that of our children will be respected at this time. With Love, Richard and Mindy."
It is believed Mindy is asking to keep their £7million Bollitree Castle estate, in Herefordshire, as they draw up divorce settlements.
The source told The Sun: 'Richard is very upset about all this. It seems he has tried hard to rekindle the relationship but to no avail.
'There is no speculation that any third party is involved.'

The couple met in 1995 and Richard wrote previously in his autobiography, On The Edge: My Story: "In an instant, I fell in love with her and realised I had met my soul-mate and best friend for life."
After they tied the knot in 2002, the pair snapped up a grade II listed Bollitree Castle in 2008.
It boasts six bedrooms, a swimming pool and 20 acres of land.
Despite Richard's on screen presence, the pair have largely kept their relationship, and two daughters, out of the limelight.

It's estimated their father, a former Top Gear legend alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May, has a net worth of around £70million.

Hollywood A-lister lined up to play Sinead O'Connor in new film about her life – & she's ‘spitting image' of Irish star

NATALIE Portman tops the list of actresses in the frame to play Sinéad O'Connor in a film about her life. Three Irish film companies have teamed up to produce a biopic about Sinéad, who died aged 56 in 2023. 3 Natalie Portman is the frontrunner to play Sinéad O'Connor in a film about her life Credit: Getty 3 Natalie was the 'spitting image' of Sinéad in her 2005 film V For Vendetta Credit: Warner Bros 3 Three Irish film companies have teamed up to produce a biopic about Sinéad, pictured, who died aged 56 in 2023 Credit: Getty Insiders said Natalie, 44, was being lined up for the role. A source said: 'Natalie is the actress the filmmakers want to play Sinéad. 'They think she is the spit of Sinéad in terms of her physicality but as an actress, they know she has the strength and power to do justice to Sinéad.' Natalie previously shaved her head for the 2005 film, V For Vendetta. A source added: 'She is the spitting image of Sinéad in that film. 'It's uncanny. 'Natalie really is a triple threat – she can morph into characters, dance and sing – and is a true perfectionist. 'She would be a great signing for this.' Sinéad's biopic is being directed by Josephine Decker, who made a film about horror writer Shirley Jackson, starring Elisabeth Moss, in 2020. The writer will be by Stacey Gregg, whose TV credits include the series Mary And George, Little Birds and The Letter For The King. 'I cried my eyes out for a fortnight' - emotional Sinead O'Connor's dad tells of losing his singer daughter and life without the star Production companies behind the project include See-Saw Films – who were behind The King's Speech, Shame, The Power of the Dog and Slow Horses – as well as Nine Daughters and ie:entertainment, which was an executive producer on Nothing Compares. Sinéad is still best remembered for her 1990 hit Nothing Compares 2 U, which was accompanied by a music video in which she sported a shaved head and shed a tear over the memory of her dead mother. Her career was defined by controversial moments due to her strong and outspoken views, along with her conversion to Islam in 2018. Sinéad once ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a performance on US show Saturday Night Live. Looking directly into the camera after singing Bob Marley's War, Sinead said 'fight the real enemy' - said to be a protest against the Catholic church. The stunt saw her banned for life by US broadcaster NBC. Days later, Sinéad took part in Bob Dylan's 30th anniversary tribute concert at Madison Square Garden and was booed But Sinéad stood by the protest, saying in an interview with the New York Times in 2021: 'I'm not sorry I did it. It was brilliant.' She also spoke out on racism, human rights, women's rights, child abuse and organised religion - namely the Catholic Church in her home country. Our source added: 'This film about Sinéad is going to be as unflinching and brutal as most of her life was – and Natalie is a dab hand at dark portrayals on camera.'

Three Hollyoaks legends set to return after decades off-screen as soap brings back 90s stars for 30th anniversary

After decades off-screen these stars are coming back to celebrate the show's landmark birthday in style LOOK WHO'S BACK Three Hollyoaks legends set to return after decades off-screen as soap brings back 90s stars for 30th anniversary HOLLYOAKS is set to welcome back three iconic stars for its 30th anniversary – and it could mean something major in store for a fan favourite. The series is gearing up to mark its anniversary in style, and as part of it, familiar faces from the show's history will be popping up to check in on the village. 7 James Redmond is returning as Finn for the 30th anniversary Credit: Getty 7 Dom was last seen heading to Spain to get married in Hollyoaks Later Credit: Alamy Advertisement 7 Carol hasn't been seen in the village in decades after heading off on a cruise ship Credit: Getty - Contributor James Redmond, Natalie Casey and John Pickard – who played Rory 'Finn' Finnigan, Carol Groves and Dominic Reilly on the soap – have all been tapped to return to their old haunt. And all three have connections to long-standing resident, Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard). A source told The Sun Online: 'They were all hugely popular characters in the 90s and had to be a part of the anniversary. Advertisement 'Hollyoaks might have a lot of younger viewers now but bosses really wanted to remember the 90s roots, so there's set to be some real nostalgia coming up.' The stars have already begun filming their scenes. Hollyoaks declined to comment when approached by The Sun Online. During their time on Hollyoaks, all three became central to major storylines that defined the show as a soap for younger audiences – especially when it came to Tony. Advertisement It's been years since any of the characters have appeared in the Hollyoaks world, although Redmond has repeatedly reprised his role of Finn for guest stints to mark special occasions. Arriving on the show as a free-spirited heartthrob in 1998, Finn became close friends with Tony Hutchinson, even going into business together. While he left in 2002, he later returned for a stint in after-watershed spin-off Hollyoaks Later, the 20th anniversary in 2015, and again for Christmas in 2017. His last appearance was in 2018, when Finn left for Margate after taking the fall for Cindy Cunningham (Steph Waring) stealing £10,000 for the purchase of a restaurant. Natalie Casey's Carol arrived on the soap in 1996, but hasn't been seen since 2000. She also had close ties to both Finn and particularly Tony, with whom she had a will they/won't they relationship. Advertisement Eventually, she left to perform on cruise ships, confessing her feelings to Tony before she did so in special Hollyoaks: Boys Do Barca. Finally, Dominic (played by Nick Pickard's real-life brother, John) is Tony's half-brother, and appeared on screen from 2005 to 2010. 7 Tony is a long-standing favourite on the soap Credit: Lime Pictures 7 Finn is Tony's best friend and business partner Credit: Lime Pictures 7 Carol went abroad to live her dreams of being a singer Credit: Mersey Television Advertisement During that time, the character was seen trying to build a relationship with his estranged sibling. However, their relationship collapsed when he believed he burned down Tony's restaurant, Il Gnosh, at the request of gangster Warren Fox. While it was later revealed it was not him, he had already confessed and not believed, so was left to serve out his sentence. After prison, Dom appeared in a series of Hollyoaks Later alongside Tony and Finn, and was living in Spain – sending the trio on a wild adventure as they ran into a mobster The White Man, played by Danny Dyer. 7 Dom is played by John Pickard - the real life brother of Tony actor, Nick Pickard Credit: Getty
