Terengganu trader loses over RM500,000 to online job scam on Facebook
Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the 38-year-old victim was approached on May 14 by a Facebook contact known as Nabila Puteri, who offered him the job via social media.
'To earn the commission, the victim was instructed to buy various items through an app downloaded from a link provided by the suspect.
'He initially received some commission for completed tasks and, lured by the early profits, made 38 more transactions to 22 different bank accounts,' Azli said in a statement today.
Azli said the victim used up all his savings from selling fruits, groceries and cattle, and also borrowed from friends and used credit cards to fund the payments.
A police report was lodged yesterday. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama

Religious minister: Jais to call two new witnesses in eHati probe tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) will summon two new witnesses tomorrow to record their statements as part of the investigation into the eHati marriage programme, which is alleged to involve immoral activities and the dissemination of questionable beliefs. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, said that the case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995. 'So far, I can confirm that the investigation has begun, and we hope that the witnesses will be present tomorrow,' he said after officiating the pre-launch ceremony of the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), today. Mohd Na'im said that two women, who were the initial witnesses, had previously lodged a complaint with the Jais Research Division. 'However, I was informed by the Enforcement Division that both complainants appeared somewhat hesitant to come forward and provide further information to Jais. I hope this issue can be clarified, so that everyone understands the situation and the truth can be revealed,' he said. 'It is crucial for witnesses to come forward and assist the Jais Enforcement Division in carrying out a professional investigation, to ensure that no party is unfairly treated,' he said. He added that the Jais Enforcement Division is also working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), which will investigate the case from the standpoint of potential civil law offences. In this regard, he urged all parties with relevant information to step forward and fully cooperate with the authorities. 'I sincerely urge all parties involved, or with relevant information, to come forward and assist the Jais Enforcement Division by providing truthful details, so that the matter can be resolved fairly and transparently,' he said. The public was recently taken aback by revelations on social media alleging that the eHati motivational programme, reportedly organised by a married couple, involved immoral activities and the propagation of dubious beliefs. In a recent post on the user's Facebook page, it was claimed that two women had performed a nude dance during a session, held at a convention centre in Shah Alam. MACC arrests Terengganu official for alleged abuse of power in land deals
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 14 — A Terengganu state civil servant has been remanded for five days beginning today for allegedly abusing his position in relation to several government land applications in the state. The remand order until Friday was issued by Magistrate Iffah Nabihah Mohd Ishak following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Magistrate's Court here today. According to a source, the male suspect, in his 50s, was detained at around 2pm yesterday when he had come to give a statement at the MACC Terengganu office. 'Initial investigations found that the suspect is believed to have committed the offences between 2019 and 2023, involving the manipulation of land plans and handling various land-related processes in the state for the benefit of his children,' the source said. Following the arrest, the source added that MACC Terengganu has seized two plots of land in a district in the state, measuring approximately 9,000 and 6,000 square feet, for investigation purposes. Meanwhile, Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrest when contacted and said the case was being investigated under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009. — Bernama

Court dismisses ex-AG special officer's appeal in lawsuit against Rewcastle-Brown
PUTRAJAYA, July 14 — The Court of Appeal today dismissed the appeal by former Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali's special officer, Mabel Sheela Mutthiah, against the High Court's decision to dismiss her legal suit against Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown. The suit is related to three articles published in Sarawak Report, including one titled 'How AG's Office Connived to Prevent a Second Post-mortem on Kevin Morais – Exclusive Expose'. A three-member bench chaired by Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi, in a unanimous decision, said that they were bound by this court's (another Court of Appeal) ruling that the plaintiff (Mabel) must provide a Malay-language translation of the impugned defamatory article. 'In this case, there was no Bahasa Melayu translation of the impugned defamatory article, and that was clearly a non-compliance with Order 92. We find there is no appealable error by the High Court. The appeal is therefore dismissed with costs of RM10,000,' Justice Azizah said. The other judges on the bench are Justices Datuk Azizul Azmi Adnan and Datuk Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin. Mabel was represented by counsel Datuk David Gurupatham and R. Venothani while lawyer Guok Ngek Seong and Phyllia Lim acted for Rewcastle-Brown. On May 2, 2024, Judge Datuk Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan rejected the suit with costs of RM15,000, after finding that the plaintiff failed to translate the allegedly defamatory articles into the Malay language. He pointed out that the requirement for complete pleadings in the Malay language is tritely attributed to the language's supremacy as a national language. Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin said the relevant provisions are enshrined in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution as well as Section 8 of the National Language Act 1963/67 and Order 92 Rule 1 of the Rules of Court 2012. Mabel filed the suit against Rewcastle-Brown in 2019 over articles linking her to alleged text messages sent to the family of Morais, who was murdered in September 2015. She denied the allegations in the article and initiated the lawsuit to seek damages from Rewcastle-Brown, as well as a court order for the article to be removed from the Sarawak Report website. — Bernama
