Men in charge: JDT captain Natxo Insa and Selangor skipper Nooa Laine .
PETALING JAYA: The 2025-2026 Malaysian Super League season kicks off with a blockbuster Charity Shield clash between Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Selangor, and all eyes will be on the battle between captains Natxo Insa and Nooa Laine in the heart of midfield.
It is a meeting of generations and styles at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium today.
In one corner stands Insa , 39, the seasoned Spanish general who has helped define JDT's dominance over the past decade.
In the other, Laine , 22, the Finnish-born rising Malaysian star is tasked with leading a revamped Selangor side into a new era.
Despite facing a team with a near-impenetrable home record, Laine is not letting history weigh him down.
'Honestly, I don't think we should dwell on their (JDT) record in the league and the Charity Shield. It's just another game,' said Laine at the pre-match press conference at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium yesterday.
'We'll do our best and see what happens.'
Laine acknowledged the challenge of integrating new players into the squad but said the team are quietly confident heading into the clash.
'It always takes time to get new players going but if the coach wants me to lead, I'll do it. It's an honour and a privilege.'
Selangor have yet to beat JDT at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium but Laine is choosing to focus on their strengths.
'We know how strong they are at home but we believe in ourselves. We're ready to fight.'
On the other side, Insa made it clear that JDT are approaching the fixture with the same mindset that has made them serial winners.
'We are a club with a strong reputation. We've won so many titles and we want to protect that,' said the JDT captain.
'We will go after Selangor to maintain our status.'
Insa, who has been a key part of JDT's engine room since 2017, said the squad's mentality remains high even without Spanish playmaker Juan Muniz, who departed in the off-season.
'Juan gave everything for the club and he was important. But we have other players ready to perform.
'Whoever starts will give their best - that's the standard at JDT.'
He praised the team's pre-season, which included matches against high-quality opponents, and said the squad are ready to hit the ground running.
'We respect the fixture. It's important to start the season with good feelings. We've prepared well and will give everything in front of our fans.'
With both teams aiming to assert dominance early in the campaign, the midfield battle could determine the flow and ultimately the outcome of the game.
JDT will be aiming to extend their legacy while Selangor are desperate to shake off the underdogs tag and prove they belong at the top.

JDT legend Farizal retires, honoured by teammates and fans

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national goalkeeper Farizal Marlias has announced his retirement from football after a career spanning almost two decades. The 39-year-old began his career with the now-defunct Shahzan Muda in 2006 before playing for Perlis, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Selangor and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). Farizal said he was deeply grateful to his family, teammates, coaches, support staff, Harimau Malaya fans, and JDT — the club he has called home since 2015. "Football has shaped me into who I am today. It taught me discipline, sacrifice, fighting spirit, and the value of unity," Farizal said in a post on Instagram on Saturday. He paid special tribute to JDT owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, crediting his leadership and vision for moulding not just the team's success but also his growth as an athlete and individual. During his decade with the Southern Tigers, Farizal made over 250 appearances, winning nine consecutive Super League titles, multiple Malaysia Cup and FA Cup crowns, and lifting the AFC Cup in 2015. He was also a key figure for the national team, earning more than 60 caps since his debut in 2009, including appearances at the AFF Cup. His farewell post was met with an outpouring of love and respect from across the football community. Safawi Rasid and Wan Zack Haikal both called him a "legend." Wan Zack added: "Thank you for all the memories. Let's get our license to teach others." Former JDT teammate Fernando Forestieri said: "Legend, my best wishes for the future, good luck papi." Natxo Insa, another veteran on the squad, posted: "So many experiences and battles we've faced." Hazwan Bakri, Matthew Davies, Shahrel Fikri, Akhyar Rashid, Junior Eldstal, Shio Hong Wan, Mohamadou Sumareh, and Mauricio dos Santos echoed the "legend" tribute, with Davies adding: "Proper club legend, shared the field with you capt."

Malaysian sprinters Azeem, Danish qualify for India finals

MALAYSIAN sprint duo Muhammad Azeem Fahmi (pic) and Danish Iftikhar Muhammad Roslee have successfully advanced to the men's 100-meter finals at the India Open athletics championship, a Continental Tour Bronze series event held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India. The 21-year-old Azeem dominated the second heat with an impressive timing of 10.48 seconds, securing first place and automatically qualifying for the final round. His performance demonstrated the form that has made him Malaysia's premier sprinter on the international stage. Danish Iftikhar also earned his place in the elite eight-man final field by finishing third in the same heat with a time of 10.64 seconds, ensuring both Malaysian representatives will compete for medals in tonight's championship race. Prior to departing for India, Azeem had expressed his determination to deliver positive results for Malaysia while utilizing every international competition opportunity to improve his personal records. 'My hope for this trip to India is to perform at my absolute best, not just for myself but for the country,' the young sprinter had stated to Kosmo. 'God willing, we will attempt to better our seasonal records, and if possible, I want to establish a new personal best. Most importantly, we want to enjoy the competition and hopefully find ourselves on the podium.' In the women's 100-meter category, Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli successfully progressed to the finals after clocking 11.97 seconds in her second heat. However, teammate Nor Aisyah Rofina Aling fell short of qualification, recording 12.14 seconds which was insufficient to advance. The men's 200-meter event proved disappointing for Malaysia as Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam could only manage sixth place in his second heat with a time of 21.95 seconds, missing out on the final by a considerable margin. Tonight's 100-meter finals promise intense competition, with Azeem and Danish expected to face formidable challenges from host nation athletes and several other Southeast Asian representatives all vying for the championship title. The Continental Tour Bronze series provides valuable international exposure for Malaysian athletes while offering crucial ranking points and preparation for major championships including the upcoming Asian Games and World Athletics events. Both Malaysian sprinters will be looking to capitalise on their strong qualifying performances and potentially secure Malaysia's first medals at this prestigious athletics meeting.
